DESCRIPTION:On June 4 history will be made here in Portland. 21 young people are suing the federal government for their constitutional rights to life\, liberty\, and property. The Youth v. Gov case (AKA Juliana v. US) has its latest and most pivotal court date yet\, right here in our city.\n\n\nRSVP here!\n\n\nOn June 4\, they will have a hearing before the 9th Circuit Court here in Portland to rule on two issues:\n\n\nWhether the case is constitutional\, and should thus be heard by the supreme court\, and;\nWhether the plaintiffs’ injunction to stop all new fossil fuel infrastructure projects will be accepted. (This injunction would stop all fossil fuel expansion operations in the US until the end of the trial!!)\n\n\n\nThis is a BIG DEAL!!\nWe need to show the judges\, the politicians\, and the world\, that we support these young people and that this case must go forward! This will be a giant movement moment for the whole world\, happening right here in our city. 1\,000 people will be in attendance. DESCRIPTION:The Tualatin Soil and Water Conservation District (TSWCD) is excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for an Invasive Species Technician! The application deadline is Friday\, June 7th at 12 PM. \nThis position will assist and report to the Invasive Species Program Coordinator regarding invasive species (plant or animal) data collection in the field\, data processing in the office\, and herbicide application to control smaller infestations of priority invasive plants at various new and existing properties within Washington County. The Invasive Species Technician will also communicate and/or coordinate (verbally or in writing) with landowners and provide presentations to the public about identifying and reporting priority invasive species. \nThe following education\, experience\, and certification is required to perform the duties of the position: \n\nMinimum of 18 months professional experience conducting invasive weed or plant surveys\, applying herbicides to control weeds\, and working with private landowners.\nA working knowledge of Microsoft Office products\, i.e. Excel\, Word\, PowerPoint;\nWorking knowledge of ESRI products; i.e. ArcGIS\, ArcCollector;\nMinimum of one year’s experience communicating orally to small and large groups.\nStrong written and oral communication skills;\nA strong knowledge of native and non-native plant species.\n\nMust have a valid Oregon driver’s license and clean driving record. (Clean to be determined by the TSWCD insurance carrier) \nThe following experience is preferred to perform the duties of the position: \n\nBachelor’s degree in biology\, botany\, ecology\, environmental science\, crop science or forestry;\nOregon Public Pesticide Applicator license with:\n\no Laws and Safety \no One additional category\, i.e. Aquatic\, Forestry\, Right of Way\, Herbicide Ag\, Regulatory Weed\, Turf & Ornamental Herbicide\, etc. \n\nAt least two years of field experience in the Pacific Northwest identifying native and invasive species (plant or animal). (Be prepared to identify species);\nAt least one year of working experience using ArcGIS (bring in sample work);\nAt least one year of current working relationships with Washington County\, Oregon landowners.\n\n\nThe position is full-time starting at $42\,000-$48\,400 per year plus benefits. Medical and dental insurance are available after 60 days. 100% TSWCD-paid short-term disability\, long-term disability\, and life insurance available after 180 days. DESCRIPTION:APPLICATIONS DUE BY June 30th\, 5pm. \n  \nPOSITION TITLE \nStormwater Outreach Coordinator \nDATES OF SERVICE \nSeptember 11\, 2019 – July 31\, 2020 (11 months – 1700 hours) \nPAY\n$13\,992 living allowance paid over the 11-month term of service (approx. $1\,272 monthly\, before taxes). \nPROJECT PARTNER \nCity of Portland\, Environmental Services Bureau\, \nGreen Street Steward Program https://www.portlandoregon.gov/bes/52501 \n  \nPOSITION SUMMARY \nThe Green Street Steward Program works in close collaboration with community partners and residents for clean rivers\, healthy watersheds and livable\, sustainable communities through promoting and stewarding Green Street facilities (i.e.\, bioswales). In acknowledgement of the many benefits to human and watershed health provided by Green Streets and other green infrastructure\, Stormwater Stewards pursue equity in service delivery. The Stormwater Outreach Coordinator position is a partnership between Confluence Environmental Center\, AmeriCorps Program and Bureau of Environmental Services\, Green Street Steward Program. \n  \nThe Stormwater Outreach Coordinator will build on the successes of previous AmeriCorps Members by inviting community members to participate in the care of Green Streets through community education and watershed stewardship activities. Green Streets function optimally for watershed health with knowledgeable residents to keep a watchful eye and assist in Green Street care. \nThe Member will connect with community groups\, organizations\, and businesses to cultivate partnerships for potential projects and stewardship activities (25%); develop and deliver training and stewardship activities in low-income\, racially diverse communities in close cooperation with partners (25%); recruit and train volunteers and manage data (20%); and develop and organize materials to foster Green Street stewardship (10%). This position will serve closely with the Tree Equity Coordinator to provide outreach\, education\, and programming in low-income\, racially diverse communities in Portland. DESCRIPTION:Join us in Portland\, Oregon for the 10th annual Green Schools Conference and Expo (GSCE) to be held at the Hilton Portland Downtown on March 2 – 4\, 2020.\n\nGSCE is the only national event to bring together all the players involved in making green schools a reality: people who lead\, operate\, build\, and teach in U.S. schools. The conference is an opportunity for green schools leaders to share challenges\, opportunities\, and lessons learned in their continued advocacy for healthy\, sustainable schools.\n\nRegistration for the conference will open in Fall 2019.\n\nThere are multiple ways to get involved with the educational programming at GSCE 2020.\n\n\n\nParticipate in the Program Working Group\nApplications are open for the GSCE Program Working Group (PWG). Do you enjoy talking on the phone? Are you a people person who is excited about providing great customer service? Do you have a passion for waste reduction and recycling\, coupled with willingness to inform and educate? If so\, you might be a great candidate to join Metro’s Recycling Information Center team as a temporary Recycling Specialist. We’re looking for a new team member who will help people in the Portland region find the information they need to recycle\, prevent waste and have a healthy home\, yard\, and garden. \nAs a Recycling Specialist for the Recycling Information Center\, you will work closely with other team members who are passionate about assisting the public and handle more than 80\,000 information referral phone calls each year. The majority of your time will be spent speaking on the phone with residents from across the greater Portland region as you connect them with businesses and organizations that provide recycling services and support reuse of products and materials. You will also teach people about ways they can prevent waste in their homes and businesses. You will also provide customer service support by taking phone calls for Metro’s recycled latex paint product\, MetroPaint\, as well as for customers of our Metro Central and Metro South transfer stations and hazardous waste facilities. Your work will be performed using a database and MS Office suite software. Knowledge of and experience in recycling and waste reduction education is preferred. Supervision is received from the Recycling Information Center program supervisor. \nThis temporary position is a great opportunity for people who currently work or seek a fairly flexible work schedule. Hours are inconsistent\, but are typically weekday\, Saturdays\, and occasional holiday hours. \nMultiple hires may be made from this applicant pool. \nTemporary Recycling Specialists fill in as needed to cover vacations\, leaves\, meetings and high volumes of calls due to promotional campaigns and seasonal variation. Two temporary positions are currently available. We anticipate considering candidates from this applicant pool when additional recycling specialist positions become available. Temporary employees may not work more than 1040 hours in a 12 month period. Temporary employees in this position typically work approximately 400-500 hours in a 12 month period. \nAt Metro\, we hire a workforce representative of the communities we serve\, understanding that a diverse workforce strengthens our organization. Still in her 20s\, Fernandez is a seasoned community organizer and advocate\, receiving numerous awards including the Brower Youth Award\, the Gates Millennium Scholarship\, and the Jane Goodall Global Leadership Award\, among others. Currently Director of Organizing at the Community Water Center in the Central Valley of California\, Fernandez speaks across the U.S. and internationally on organizing and leveraging community-driven solutions for environmental equity.
