SUMMARY:COVID COMPLEXITIES – A GLOBAL TOWN HALL
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 has touched every part of the world but its effects and the reaction of different countries has been uneven. In an interconnected world we need to understand the pandemic’s impact beyond our borders. Importantly\, the progress toward a COVID-19 vaccine and therapeutic treatments is a global pursuit. There are\, as well\, already no shortage of changes made and those to come in reaction to the global catastrophe – in our communities\, technology\, health and science\, government performance\, elections\, the global economy and our lifestyles. \nA group of World Affairs Councils – nationwide\, independent\, nonpartisan educational organizations – is joining together with an international network of journalists and specialists to organize conversations over the course of two evenings in early September. The goal is to help Americans understand the impact of the pandemic in an interactive program open to all. \nWe invite you to join this unique partnership to inform and inspire Americans to know more about COVID-19’s impact around the world\, the race for a vaccine and how the vaccine has changed the world. \nOn September 2nd and 3rd journalists\, physicians\, researchers\, NGO officials and others will come together to discuss the global impact of COVID-19 and the pursuit of a vaccine. \nThe program is brought to the public in partnership with many of the nationwide networks of World Affairs Councils and an international network of journalists. \nRegister for this event here.

It is likely that you’ve witnessed it at school\, on the news or scrolling through your timeline\, or maybe you’ve experienced it directly. SUMMARY:We Protest: Fighting For What We Believe In
DESCRIPTION:In her newly published book\, We Protest: Fighting For What We Believe In\, photojournalist Tish Lampert captures the spirit of the heroes and ordinary citizens on their activist journey to defend their American values during the most conflicted era in our recent history. Lampert boldly charts the chronology of social-change movements that have dominated the headlines over the past several years: the fight for women’s rights and gender equality\, immigration rights\, civil liberties\, gun violence\, and the environment. Lampert takes us to the front lines of activism\, where she has documented each protest and their respective leaders\, as well as the legions of ordinary Americans standing together to protect the values of our great nation. \nIn recent months the eyes of the nation and the world have been on Portland as citizens have been demonstrating for over 70 days to protest systemic racism\, police brutality\, and support larger cause of Black Lives Matter. How do we put this moment in perspective and understand Portland’s story in the larger arc of activism? \nJoin us for a rich discussion on protest\, present and past\, with photojournalist Tish Lampert\, Adrienne Belafonte Biesemeyer\, activist and Executive Director of the Anir Foundation\, and Portland’s Eric K. Ward\, Executive Director of Western States Center. Also featuring a special video introduction from Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist David K. Shipler. \nCosponsored with the World Affairs Councils of America.  \nRead More & Register

SUMMARY:Webinar: Sustainability Education in the Food-Energy-Water-Nexus
DESCRIPTION:Worldwide\, there has been growing interest in research\, education\, and discourse around the FEW-Nexus\, which serves as a framework to describe and aid in addressing complex coupled human-natural systems and the most significant global challenges of today and tomorrow. Institutions of higher education must take a leading role in fostering science\, technology\, engineering\, and mathematics (STEM) and food\, agriculture\, natural resources\, and human sciences (FANH) literacy as a means of preparing all global citizens for the most pressing global challenges of today and tomorrow.  In this webinar\, we present the National Collaborative for Research on Food\, Energy\, and Water Education (NC-FEW; http://ncfew.org)\, a new transdisciplinary community of postsecondary educators and education researchers engaged in FEW-Nexus-focused educational programming and research/evaluation. Over the next 5 years\, this Research Coordination Network (RCN; ECR-EHR Core Research #1856040) will engage individuals from a diverse array of postsecondary faculty with STEM and FANH backgrounds by affording a novel and innovative space for discourse\, networking\, and collaboration-building around FEW-Nexus-focused education and education research/evaluation. The webinar will provide an opportunity for participants to identify and explore the needs and priorities of the AASHE community in respect to NC-FEW’s broader mission and goals. \nRegister Today \nThis webinar is part of a series of webinars on sustainability in the curriculum put on by SCC and AASHE.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Making Economics Relevant: Incorporating SDG 8 & SDG 12 in the Curriculum–An Interdisciplinary Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Introductory economics courses provide an opportunity to connect the economic assumptions of human behavior with their realization and legitimacy in social norms. Given that social norms dictate economic outcomes\, the questioning of the behavioral assumptions in economics\, specifically insatiable appetites to consume and profit maximization/cost minimization\, would appear appropriate. Such a discussion allows for the evaluation of the alignment of social norms with sustainability values: environmental and social justice and economic equity\, presenting an opportunity to address how the teaching and the related practice of economics promotes unsustainable outcomes. This approach underscores the significance of an interdisciplinary approach to sustainability education. \nIn this webinar\, SDG 8\, Economic Growth and Decent Work and SDG 12\, Responsible Consumption and Production will be addressed from the perspective of prevailing economic assumptions. The discussion will address how to engage students in a critical assessment of current practices specific to SDG 8 and SDG 12 and fundamentally\, provide them with a classroom forum to understand how and why the practice of economics needs to be modified in order to promote sustainability as a social norm. The discussion will address the following topics: decoupling\, carbon taxation\, exploitation\, competitive advantage\, opportunity cost\, valuing the environment\, externalities\, lifecycle assessment\, cradle to cradle/cradle to waste\, economic growth\, alternative economic indicators of progress and stakeholder engagement. The webinar will be of value to anyone seeking to increase economic literacy and will provide an understanding as well as tools to promote understanding of the relationship between an economic framework and the sustainability of its outcomes. No prior economics knowledge is required and the discussion will be interdisciplinary. \n\n\nThis webinar is part of a series of webinars on sustainability in the curriculum put on by SCC and AASHE.

SUMMARY:Webcast: Oregon's Forests and the Fight Against Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Forests are among the largest stores of living carbon on the planet\, and it turns out that the forests of western Oregon have a higher carbon density than almost any other forest type in the world. Unfortunately\, the destruction and mismanagement of these forests over the past century has transferred massive amounts of stored carbon to the atmosphere\, which has contributed significantly to the warming of the planet. \nWe can’t change the past\, but the policy choices we make today will either continue to make forests a part of the climate problem\, or ensure that they are part of the solution. \nJoin Felice Kelly\, co-lead of our Forest Defense team\, to learn about Climate\, Carbon\, and Oregon’s Forests\, and what we can do about it. \nDid you know that the State of Oregon owns and manages almost a million acres of public forestland? Oregon’s “State Forests” can play a major role in fighting climate change – both by sequestering large amounts of carbon\, and by mitigating the impacts of climate change – if the state shifts the management of these public lands to respond to the climate crisis. \nJoin us on Wednesday to hear about efforts to protect state-owned old-growth forests and transition the management of our State Forests towards more climate-smart forestry. Two community organizers from different corners of the state will be presenting\, and we’ll have for a Q&A afterwards. Hope you can join! \nREGISTER HERE. \nIMPORTANT: This presentation has a two-part registation process. If you do not complete the second step\, you will not receive information on accessing this presentation.

SUMMARY:COVID-19\, debt relief\, and the climate and biodiversity crises
DESCRIPTION:Join IIED on Wednesday\, 9 September for an online discussion on how debt relief can be addressed through climate and nature programme swaps. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic\, urgent debt relief is needed. For many developing countries\, repayments mean that vast amounts of money are diverted away from action on the climate emergency and biodiversity loss as well as education\, health and infrastructure. Millions more vulnerable people are being pushed into poverty. \nThis online event will bring together experts to discuss the use of debt for climate and nature programme swaps as a tool to address poverty\, the climate crisis and biodiversity loss. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat are the opportunities and challenges of such an approach? What role can creditors from multilateral organisations and bilateral governments\, and debtor governments play? And to what extent can such an approach support a sustainable post-COVID-19 recovery? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here
