SUMMARY:Conservation Finance Boot Camp
DESCRIPTION:2019 Conservation Finance Boot Camp\n\nMonday\, June 24\, 2019 from 12:00PM until Friday\, June 28\, 2019 at 2:00PM\n\n\n\n\n\nCFN is pleased to announce our 13th annual Conservation Finance Boot Camp will be held June 24-28th\, 2019\, at Portland State University in Portland\, OR. The Boot Camp is a week-long\, intensive training course to help mid-career professionals utilize innovative and effective financing strategies for land and resource conservation\, restoration\, and stewardship. \nThe application for the 2019 Boot Camp will be open from January 15th – February 15th\, 2019. Each year\, our Boot Camp accepts 30 participants. Please take some time to review the questions on the sample application HERE and prepare your answers ahead of time before filling out the live application form below. It is best to type out your responses to the essay questions in a separate document and copy and paste them into the application form. \nAPPLY HERE\nFor more information on applying to the Boot Camp\, please refer to our frequently asked questions: \nWho should apply?\nMid-career professionals integrating conservation finance into their land and resource conservation work\, including (but not limited to) land trust and NGO professionals\, public agency professionals\, foundation officers\, board members\, private sector investors\, business executives\, legal counselors\, and academics. Applicants who are starting or currently working on conservation finance projects that they are interested in having workshopped by peers and presenters at the course are strongly encouraged to apply. We do not generally accept current students\, given the applied nature of the course. \nWhen will I hear back?\nWe will communicate decisions in March. After the first round of decisions is made\, we may re-open applications in the case that we have remaining seats in the course. \nHow are decisions made?\nApplicants are selected based on a combination of factors including the applicability of course content to their work\, a demonstrated intent to apply what they learn\, and cohort balance and composition. \nIs there a waitlist?\nYes\, if there is sufficient interest. When decisions are made\, we will give selected applicants the option to be added to the waitlist. \nWhat are the costs of attending?\nTuition is $2000 plus a small processing fee\, which includes all local transportation and meals. Attendees are responsible for covering costs associated with lodging and transportation to/from the course. \nAre scholarships available?\nTuition scholarships may be made available for applicants whose organizations demonstrate financial need. There will be a question in the application to detail your need for a scholarship. \nIs the course open to applicants outside the United States?\nWe are happy to welcome participants who bring an international perspective to our course and have had many non-US attendees. However\, we would like to note that the course content is based on the U.S. legal code and that we primarily draw upon domestic case studies and examples. Although some topics may be analogous to international projects\, we cannot guarantee the tools and strategies covered in the source will be directly applicable to your work. \nIf you have further questions\, please contact Allegra Wrocklage at awrocklage@conservation-finance.org.

SUMMARY:President's Environmental Youth Award
DESCRIPTION:The President’s Environmental Youth Award (PEYA) recognizes outstanding environmental projects by K-12 youth. The PEYA program promotes awareness of our nation’s natural resources and encourages positive community involvement. Since 1971\, the President of the United States has joined with EPA to recognize young people for protecting our nation’s air\, water\, land\, and ecology. It is one of the most important ways EPA and the Administration demonstrate commitment to environmental stewardship efforts created and conducted by our nation’s youth. \nEach year the PEYA program honors a wide variety of projects developed by young individuals\, school classes (kindergarten through high school)\, summer camps\, public interest groups\, and youth organizations to promote environmental awareness. Thousands of young people from all 50 states and the U.S. territories have submitted projects to EPA for consideration. Winning projects in the past have covered a wide range of subject areas\, including: \n \n\nrestoring native habitats\nrecycling in schools and communities\nconstruction of nature preserves\ntree planting\ninstalling renewable energy projects\ncreating videos\, skits and newsletters that focused on environmental issues\nparticipating in many other creative sustainability efforts\n\nEvaluation results consistently demonstrate that participation in the PEYA program is frequently a life-changing experience for many of the young people and their project sponsors.

SUMMARY:Progressing National SDGs Implementations
DESCRIPTION:What are Voluntary National Reviews? \nVoluntary National Reviews are one of the key mechanisms to track the implementation progress of the commitments enshrined in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. \nPresented annually at the UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF)\, they aim to promote accountability to citizens\, support effective international cooperation\, and foster exchange of best practices and mutual learning. \nWhy attend this webinar? \n2019 marks the end of the first 4-year cycle of reviews of the SDGs\, so it is an important year to assess overall progress and consider potential improvements to the process. \nThis online launch will share the main findings of a study commissioned by civil society\, analysing the VNRs and a sample of civil society reports produced in 2017 for the HLPF. The assessment identifies best practices and provides recommendations for improving implementation and the VNR process and reports\, as well as strengthening accountability around the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

SUMMARY:Metro’s 2019 Nature in Neighborhoods Grants
DESCRIPTION:Want to restore and care for nature in your community? If you have a vision for improving water quality\, creating fish and wildlife habitat\, getting rid of weeds\, or restoring nature in the Portland metropolitan area\, a Metro Nature in Neighborhoods restoration grant can help get your idea off the ground.  \n  \nGrant recipients have planted native species at Ross Island\, improved water quality and amphibian habitat in Willow Creek\, andrestored habitat at the Sandy River Delta for fish\, migrating birds and turtles all while engaging local residents in being stewards of their local natural areas. \n  \nMetro grants expand partnerships to inspire new approaches to restoration\, including economic and environmental equity. In the Jade District\, APANO\, Columbia Land Trust and Audubon worked together with private landowners to increase community stewardship and improve habitat.  In Hillsboro\, Depave transformed the M&M Marketplace’s parking lot from gray to green by engaging community members that included pavement removal\, rain garden creation\, and native plant installation.  Momentum Alliance and Northwest Youth Corps co-created a diverse conservation leadership program for youth interns with year-round programming and coaching. \n  \nMetro’s Nature in Neighborhood restoration and community stewardship grants supports programs like these. \n  \nThis round of grants is possible thanks to support from voters\, who in 2016 renewed the parks and natural areas levy\, extending funding to 2023. New this round\, the restoration and community stewardship grants will be offered every two years. \n  \nThe restoration and community stewardship grants program will award $700\,000 this year. One- or two-year grants are up to $100\,000. \n  \nGroups throughout greater Portland are encouraged to apply. \n  \nClick HERE to learn more about Metro restoration and community stewardship grants and fill out a simple application by January 29\, 2019. \n  \nTo learn more and ask questions\, contact the grants coordinator\, Crista Gardner\, at Crista.Gardner@oregonmetro.gov.
