SUMMARY:Campus Sustainability Month
DESCRIPTION:Held every October\, Campus Sustainability Month is an international celebration of sustainability in higher education. Throughout the month\, colleges and universities organize events on campus and elsewhere to engage and inspire incoming students and other campus stakeholders to become sustainability change agents. These events include teach-ins\, sustainability pledge drives\, zero-energy concerts\, waste audits\, green sporting events\, letter writing campaigns\, service projects and much more! \n\n\n\n\nThe goal of CSM is to raise the visibility of campus sustainability and provide campus sustainability advocates with a platform through which to deepen campus engagement around sustainability. It provides an excellent opportunity to recruit new leaders and set goals for the rest of the year. It serves as a complement to Earth Day\, which is held April 22 each year\, and is often a time for celebration and recognition of the good work that took place over the course of the academic year.

SUMMARY:Investing Sustainably
DESCRIPTION:Join Solar Oregon and 350PDX to learn more about fossil fuel divestment and explore alternatives funds that are building a more sustainable future. \nThe divestment movement is gaining momentum. The country of Ireland\, New York City\, and Oxford University are recent high-profile examples where leaders are stepping up and taking their money away from the biggest polluters on the planet. These large successes are powered by the choices individuals make to ensure that their investments are aligned with their values. \nSpecial guests Dan Orzech from the Clean Power Cooperative and Phil Richman from Ten Bridge Partners will lead a conversation about investing in local solar energy projects and ESG (environmental\, social and governance) funds. They will be able to answer any questions you have about how responsible investing does and does not differ from investing in fossil fuels and how social responsibility impacts value. \nInvestment in local projects offers you a way to see the direct impact your money has on the community. Projects sponsored by the Clean Power Cooperative keeps money in the local economy. Lowering the utility cost for cities\, counties\, schools\, and nonprofits free up more money for these entities to fulfill their mission and serve the community. \nOn a larger scale\, companies that are tackling issues around climate change head-on are the best prepared to meet the challenges of the future. They are solving some of the most urgent problems we face today and have the potential to offer sustainable long-term growth\, both for the planet and for individual investors. \nSustainable investment is an important way to vote with your dollars and ensure that your money is going to work both for your future financial security and for the health of our environment. There are different ways to invest depending on your income. Join us to learn more about how you can maximize your impact.

SUMMARY:HEATWAVE: Empathy for the HVAC ….a gamified virtual reality experiment
DESCRIPTION:Join us for HEATWAVE\, an innovative research project conducted by Portland State University’s Research-based Design Initiative\, Bynum Laboratories and Opsis Architecture. \nThe relationship between people and the control systems in a building is a critical factor in overall building energy performance. Thoughtfully designed passive systems are ineffective unless operated as intended\, resulting in a performance gap between predicted energy consumption and actual energy use. Inspired by the need to have better “behaved” occupants\, the team embarked on a research project to study how gamified virtual reality could build upon the user’s emotional relationship with a space\, improving their ability and desire to effectively utilize passive and advanced systems such as shades\, ceiling fans\, lighting controls\, and operable windows. \nThis event features an opportunity to play HEATWAVE\, enjoy refreshments\, and engage in lively discussion about the future of VR in design as we move beyond basic visualization.

SUMMARY:TEDxMtHood
DESCRIPTION:In the chaos of today’s world\, it can seem like we’re living through an age of constant destruction. Whether it’s depletion of natural resources\, corruption in our governments\, violations in human rights – the problems are real and the consequences are heavy. Nature finds hope in its decomposers. Decomposers break down the dead and the dying. They metabolize what has been destroyed. They turn ruin into hope. Decomposers restore balance. They complete the broken loops. They bring back new life. \nThis year’s TEDxMtHood speaker line-up is confirmed and will bring Portland’s decomposers to the stage.  Their actions are deep. Their ideas are regenerative. They break down the struggle and offer new hope for a better\, healthier world. \nJoin us on October 13th where we celebrate our teachers\, our artists\, our friends\, our neighbors\, our leaders\, our activists\, our scientists\, our system revitalizers\, our life-bringers\, our hope-restorers – our decomposers.

SUMMARY:Global Climate Change Week
DESCRIPTION:October 15-21 \nClimate change poses a major threat to sustainable development. As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says\, ‘Climate change will create new poor between now and 2100\, in developing and developed countries\, and jeopardize sustainable development’ (2014). \nFor this reason\, it is important for everyone concerned about sustainable development to take action on climate change. One way for academic communities in particular to do so is by taking part in Global Climate Change Week (GCCWeek)\, an initiative designed to encourage academic communities – including academics\, students\, and non-academic staff at universities – in all disciplines and countries to engage with each other\, their communities\, and policy makers on climate change. \nStart planning now.  Learn More Here.
