SUMMARY:Conservation Finance Boot Camp
DESCRIPTION:2019 Conservation Finance Boot Camp\n\nMonday\, June 24\, 2019 from 12:00PM until Friday\, June 28\, 2019 at 2:00PM\n\n\n\n\n\nCFN is pleased to announce our 13th annual Conservation Finance Boot Camp will be held June 24-28th\, 2019\, at Portland State University in Portland\, OR. The Boot Camp is a week-long\, intensive training course to help mid-career professionals utilize innovative and effective financing strategies for land and resource conservation\, restoration\, and stewardship. \nThe application for the 2019 Boot Camp will be open from January 15th – February 15th\, 2019. Each year\, our Boot Camp accepts 30 participants. Please take some time to review the questions on the sample application HERE and prepare your answers ahead of time before filling out the live application form below. It is best to type out your responses to the essay questions in a separate document and copy and paste them into the application form. \nAPPLY HERE\nFor more information on applying to the Boot Camp\, please refer to our frequently asked questions: \nWho should apply?\nMid-career professionals integrating conservation finance into their land and resource conservation work\, including (but not limited to) land trust and NGO professionals\, public agency professionals\, foundation officers\, board members\, private sector investors\, business executives\, legal counselors\, and academics. Applicants who are starting or currently working on conservation finance projects that they are interested in having workshopped by peers and presenters at the course are strongly encouraged to apply. We do not generally accept current students\, given the applied nature of the course. \nWhen will I hear back?\nWe will communicate decisions in March. After the first round of decisions is made\, we may re-open applications in the case that we have remaining seats in the course. \nHow are decisions made?\nApplicants are selected based on a combination of factors including the applicability of course content to their work\, a demonstrated intent to apply what they learn\, and cohort balance and composition. \nIs there a waitlist?\nYes\, if there is sufficient interest. When decisions are made\, we will give selected applicants the option to be added to the waitlist. \nWhat are the costs of attending?\nTuition is $2000 plus a small processing fee\, which includes all local transportation and meals. Attendees are responsible for covering costs associated with lodging and transportation to/from the course. \nAre scholarships available?\nTuition scholarships may be made available for applicants whose organizations demonstrate financial need. There will be a question in the application to detail your need for a scholarship. \nIs the course open to applicants outside the United States?\nWe are happy to welcome participants who bring an international perspective to our course and have had many non-US attendees. However\, we would like to note that the course content is based on the U.S. legal code and that we primarily draw upon domestic case studies and examples. Although some topics may be analogous to international projects\, we cannot guarantee the tools and strategies covered in the source will be directly applicable to your work. \nIf you have further questions\, please contact Allegra Wrocklage at awrocklage@conservation-finance.org.

SUMMARY:Designing Sustainable Cities: What About the People?
DESCRIPTION:Highlighting the need for a socially-aware planning process when building resilient cities.\nCan urban planning and design make cities more resilient? Join WRI’s Robin King and University of Oxford’s Cathy Baldwin as they answer this question\, which they address in their new book\, Social Sustainability\, Climate Resilience and Community-Based Urban Development: What About the People? \nUrban communities around the world face increased stress from natural disasters linked to climate change and urban pressures such as increased heat\, flooding\, and insufficient services. Fourteen case studies from around the world — focusing on housing\, public space\, transport\, and natural disasters like flooding and earthquakes — stress how social networks and social cohesion may be even more important for resilient cities than solely their physical structures. \nRobin King and Cathy Baldwin explore the relationship between urban built environments and pro-community behaviors and psychological responses\, which include positive acts and states of mind that are beneficial to communities and their residents. \nJoin the conversation as the researchers present their framework\, case studies and recommendations. Natalie Elwell\, from WRI’s Gender and Social Equity Initiative\, will moderate the discussion.

SUMMARY:Creating Healthy Communities: The Connection Between Nature and Health Equity
DESCRIPTION:The Intertwine Alliance is excited to continue its series of Health & Nature Forums with an event focusing on health equity. \nHealth equity\, the creation of accessible pathways to health resources and benefits for everyone in the community\, has become a greater focus of attention in health care. As we examine the many factors that influence one’s wellbeing\, issues like economic status\, jobs\, transportation and housing are now seen and understood as critical determinants of health\, lessening the focus on one’s genetic makeup. In addition\, leaders are looking beyond these social issues to ideas that the environment itself can play a larger role in determining individual and community health. \nJoin other community health and conservation leaders for an in-depth exploration of these ideas\, and help us formulate creative strategies for injecting nature into this important community-wide conversation. We’ll announce speakers\, panels and other details soon. \nThis will be the seventh Health & Nature Forum since the series launched back in 2014\, and we look forward to seeing both return and new faces. Questions? Please email Program Director David Cohen at david@theintertwine.org. \n
