SUMMARY:UNESCO World Conference on ESD - Pre-conference workshops
DESCRIPTION:Join UNESCO for a global series of online workshops on how to transform society through learning with Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)\, launching in September 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a tragic impact on human life around the world: killing hundreds of thousands of people\, causing global economic decline and school closures in over 180 countries. It has challenged the structures of our societies and our ways of life. This disruption also presents a historic chance to redesign our societies and reroute from the current path. UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Education\, Stefania Giannini\, has called upon governments to “build back better”\, and change education to meet the climate emergency through Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and the Agenda 2030. ESD reassesses what we learn\, where we learn and how we learn to ensure we develop the knowledge\, skills\, values and attitudes that enable us to make informed decisions and actions on global problems such as the climate crisis and the COVID-19 crisis. \n\n\n\nTransforming learning to transform societies towards sustainability is the aim of the ESD for 2030 framework. This roadmap for ESD in 2020-2030 will be officially launched at the UNESCO World Conference on ESD taking place on 17-19 May 2021\, in Berlin\, Germany. In the lead-up to the World Conference\, UNESCO invite you to a series of ESD online workshops in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany\, and with the German Commission for UNESCO as advisory partner. The discussions and results from the series of online workshops will be used to further develop the conference program and help shape the agenda in Berlin next year. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUPCOMING WORKSHOPS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n#1: The big conversation: ESD and the world beyond Covid-19\n9 September 2020\, 12:30 GMT+2  (3:30 am Pacific) \nCOVID-19 has challenged many aspects of our lives\, but also provided an opportunity for global change. How can ESD contribute to this transformation? DESCRIPTION:The Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians (ATNI) is requesting video submissions from indigenous youth for a Tribal Climate Change video contest for the National Tribal Leadership Climate Change Summit. Up to four* winners will receive full travel awards ($900 maximum value*) and up to four* runners-up will receive partial travel awards ($400 maximum value*) to attend our in-person Summit in Seattle (May 16-20\, 2021). \nWe want to explore the impacts of climate change through the eyes\, experiences\, and passions of Indigenous youth. There are\, as well\, already no shortage of changes made and those to come in reaction to the global catastrophe – in our communities\, technology\, health and science\, government performance\, elections\, the global economy and our lifestyles. \nA group of World Affairs Councils – nationwide\, independent\, nonpartisan educational organizations – is joining together with an international network of journalists and specialists to organize conversations over the course of two evenings in early September. It is likely that you’ve witnessed it at school\, on the news or scrolling through your timeline\, or maybe you’ve experienced it directly. You also understand it’s no longer enough simply to not be racist; instead\, we as Oregonians must be actively anti-racist and stop hiding behind our states “progressive” reputation. Neither is it sufficient to be colorblind; because true equality means recognizing every shade\, celebrating what makes us different\, while ensuring that those qualities do not lead to anything less than actual equality. With the Teen Voices for Racial Justice Essay Contest\, Portland Monthly & Cambia Health Solutions call to action those of you who do not remain on the sidelines. Perhaps you pass out fliers or march alongside fellow activists\, shouting the simple truth that Black Lives Matter. DESCRIPTION:Worldwide\, there has been growing interest in research\, education\, and discourse around the FEW-Nexus\, which serves as a framework to describe and aid in addressing complex coupled human-natural systems and the most significant global challenges of today and tomorrow. Institutions of higher education must take a leading role in fostering science\, technology\, engineering\, and mathematics (STEM) and food\, agriculture\, natural resources\, and human sciences (FANH) literacy as a means of preparing all global citizens for the most pressing global challenges of today and tomorrow.  In this webinar\, we present the National Collaborative for Research on Food\, Energy\, and Water Education (NC-FEW; http://ncfew.org)\, a new transdisciplinary community of postsecondary educators and education researchers engaged in FEW-Nexus-focused educational programming and research/evaluation. Over the next 5 years\, this Research Coordination Network (RCN; ECR-EHR Core Research #1856040) will engage individuals from a diverse array of postsecondary faculty with STEM and FANH backgrounds by affording a novel and innovative space for discourse\, networking\, and collaboration-building around FEW-Nexus-focused education and education research/evaluation. SUMMARY:Storytelling to Build Connections in a Virtual World
DESCRIPTION:Everyone has a story to tell and in this teacher workshop\, facilitated by education and outreach associates from the University of Colorado Boulder\, we will provide important storytelling resources to help participants connect and develop relationships with their students virtually. Participants will be introduced to key elements of storytelling\, engage with storytelling resources developed as part of the award winning Lens on Climate Change project\, and ultimately produce a video in which they tell their own story. The storytelling framework presented in this course may also be applied to other classroom investigations (see “Catch our Drift” video). DESCRIPTION:Surfrider is partnering with Elizabeth Jones Art Center to do a virtual Marine Reserves series. For each event\, participants will learn about marine reserves in general\, specific information about the focus reserve\, and research happening in that reserve. Afterwards\, there will be an art class to create one (or more) marine organisms that live in the reserve. All of the art will be sent to Elisabeth Jones Art Center and combined into a giant 25’ mobile! SUMMARY:Webinar: Making Economics Relevant: Incorporating SDG 8 & SDG 12 in the Curriculum–An Interdisciplinary Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Introductory economics courses provide an opportunity to connect the economic assumptions of human behavior with their realization and legitimacy in social norms. Given that social norms dictate economic outcomes\, the questioning of the behavioral assumptions in economics\, specifically insatiable appetites to consume and profit maximization/cost minimization\, would appear appropriate. Such a discussion allows for the evaluation of the alignment of social norms with sustainability values: environmental and social justice and economic equity\, presenting an opportunity to address how the teaching and the related practice of economics promotes unsustainable outcomes. This approach underscores the significance of an interdisciplinary approach to sustainability education. \nIn this webinar\, SDG 8\, Economic Growth and Decent Work and SDG 12\, Responsible Consumption and Production will be addressed from the perspective of prevailing economic assumptions. The discussion will address how to engage students in a critical assessment of current practices specific to SDG 8 and SDG 12 and fundamentally\, provide them with a classroom forum to understand how and why the practice of economics needs to be modified in order to promote sustainability as a social norm. The discussion will address the following topics: decoupling\, carbon taxation\, exploitation\, competitive advantage\, opportunity cost\, valuing the environment\, externalities\, lifecycle assessment\, cradle to cradle/cradle to waste\, economic growth\, alternative economic indicators of progress and stakeholder engagement. The webinar will be of value to anyone seeking to increase economic literacy and will provide an understanding as well as tools to promote understanding of the relationship between an economic framework and the sustainability of its outcomes. No prior economics knowledge is required and the discussion will be interdisciplinary. \n\n\nThis webinar is part of a series of webinars on sustainability in the curriculum put on by SCC and AASHE.
