SUMMARY:Webinar: The Sustainability Problem: An Invitation
DESCRIPTION:As the comedian John Oliver says\, “Nobody knows what sustainability means but we feel good when we say it.” This presentation addresses the problem of sustainability in general\, and sustainability education in particular. The limitations of several current sustainability frameworks are presented\, and the “social trap” of educating within currently accepted worldviews is described. Anton will define a grounded philosophy that will enable sustainability leaders to overcome these barriers. \nParticipants will be invited to take part in an educational pilot project in association with Jeff Bridges and his latest film “Living in the Future’s Past.” [Pre-registrants will receive background materials with the log-on URL for the webinar.] \nDr. Anton G. Camarota is Executive Director of Tellari\, a consultancy dedicated to helping business leaders build sustainable companies. SUMMARY:Grow Your Own Produce: Warm Season Crops\, Edible Flowers\, & Attracting Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:In May\, the weather typically gets warmer and many flowers are blooming. We will discuss reliable varieties of warm season crops\, including Tomatoes\, Squash\, Peppers\, and Cucumbers\, to grow in your garden that will produce well despite our cool summer evenings. Enhancing warm microclimates and providing protection are two strategies for increasing production of these heat loving plants. Many of these plants require insects for pollination. In this class\, you will learn about pollination\, pollinator insects\, and flowers that attract these companions to gardens. We will also highlight edible flowers\, their functions in the landscape\, and recipes. This class will also cover common weeds in the garden. Students will learn how to these plants reproduce and how to discourage these plants in their gardens. \nThese classes are available as a five class series ($100) or as individual events ($25 each). 20% off discount for People’s Food Coop members – just be in touch with Marisha by email at marisha.permaculturerising@gmail.com to get the discount code.

SUMMARY:The Future of Foods: Great Tasting\, Healthy Foods for a Low Carbon World
DESCRIPTION:What is for dinner in the new carbon economy? The food industry is among the three largest emitters of greenhouse gases. Clearly the food system must transform operations to reduce its carbon footprint and help avoid the worst impacts of climate change. \nSustainable growth requires a transformation in food systems through adoption of ag innovations\, commercialization of plant-based meat substitutes\, and dietary changes as well as policies and dietary guidelines that promote sustainable and resilience agricultural supply chains and consumer choices. How the public thinks about and accepts new food products is key to creating market demand for healthier and low carbon food. \nJoin LightWorks and the Swette Center for Sustainable Food Systems at Arizona State University and SSF in a 90-minute exploration about how sustainable food companies are leading this transition and can scale sufficiently to lower climate impacts and what research and nonprofit centers are doing to aid the global transition to sustainable\, healthy and culturally appropriate food choices. Panelists include Walter Robb\, former Whole Foods Co-CEO\, Rebekah from Impossible Foods and Daniel Vennard from the World Resources Institute. The Festival reinforces STEM\, Common Core and Next Generation Science concepts through water-focused classroom presentations\, exhibits and stage shows. \nVolunteers can get involved with the Festival in two ways: \n  \n\nGeneral volunteers are the glue that makes the Festival run smoothly\, and as a result\, play any number of roles throughout the day (e.g.helping exhibitors unload and load their materials\, setting up event signage\, directing students in and out of stage shows). General volunteers can sign up to help for part or the whole day. Typical time commitment 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. (unless otherwise specified by you below)\nClass guides lead a class around the campus making sure that they successfully get from activity to activity (activities are 25 minutes long and there is 10 minutes travel time between activities).
