DESCRIPTION:The story of garden tools is the story of humanity. Although tools have evolved from sticks and stones to bone and wood\, to a wide range of modern plastics and metals\, the work we do with the tools hasn’t changed much. Seth Pauley of Red Pig Garden Tools will talk about the history of garden tools and how that history informs what tools we use today. He will also cover how to choose the right tool for the job\, offer tips for digging and weeding more efficiently in the garden\, and answer questions. The audience will be challenged by Seth’s intriguing collection of old and unique tools ­- what on earth did they use that for?  The artisans at Red Pig Tools are the only blacksmiths in the United States specialized in hand forged garden tools for home gardeners\, nurserymen\, landscapers\, and farmers. Seth himself is a craftsperson\, writer\, and student of history as well as a blacksmith. DESCRIPTION:In Portland\, following the lead of youth from high schools\, middle schools and youth organizations\, we will be holding a rally outside of City Hall at 10.30am to demand an Oregon Green New Deal\, and an end to fossil fuels here in Oregon. \nThis is followed by a march through downtown Portland\, across the Hawthorne Bridge and over the the Eastbank Esplanade.  \nOn the Eastbank Esplanade we will be holding a Climate Strike Festival near OMSI / the Tilikum Crossing Bridge\, with opportunities for folks to become empowered in action for climate justice – 12pm – 5pm. \nThis means trainings such as – Climate Justice 101; What is the Green New Deal?; Organizing 101; Civil Disobedience; Volunteer Orientations; and more. \nThe festival is open to all\, with art builds\, trainings\, climate movement orientations\, music tents\, film screenings\, food trucks\, and a place to build community and gain the skills and knowledge we need to end the climate crisis. \nAcross the world millions of people are stopping business as usual to take action on the climate crisis. DESCRIPTION:With beautiful photos and entertaining stories\, Chet Orloff will take us from the gardens of antiquity forward to the great documentary gardens of the 18th and 19th centuries and finally to the gardens of our own Pacific Northwest.  He will discuss the work of some of the great names in garden design\, including Brown\, Jefferson\, and the Olmsteds and what they contributed to our current garden tradition. SUMMARY:Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
DESCRIPTION:The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: (1) REU Sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. REU Sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department or may offer interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme. Proposals with an international dimension are welcome. (2) REU Supplements may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements or may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects. \nWho May Submit Proposals: \nThe categories of proposers eligible to submit proposals to the National Science Foundation are identified in the NSF Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide(PAPPG)\, Chapter I.E. \nWho May Serve as PI: \nFor REU Site proposals\, a single individual may be designated as the Principal Investigator. This individual will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the award. However\, one additional person may be designated as Co-Principal Investigator if developing and operating the REU Site would involve such shared responsibility. Speakers will share examples for how campuses can participate\, lessons learned and suggestions for how to use this international event to promote sustainability on your campuses and beyond. \nRegister today \nBillie Hardin\, Sustainability Project Manager\, Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS)\nBillie directs and supports the 16 KCTCS Colleges and the KCTCS System Office in establishing sustainable development strategies.  She also manages the KCTCS space utilization initiative designed to enhance space and enrollment efficiencies to increase student access\, completion\, and retention.  Billie is the chair of the Kentucky Environmental Education Council\, an agency attached to the Kentucky Cabinet of Education and Workforce Development.  She is an Executive Committee member and the immediate past chair of the Kentucky Association for Environmental Education Board of Directors and serves as a liaison to the Kentucky University Partnership for Environmental Education (KUPEE).  Billie also serves as an Advisory Council member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.  She has served as a liaison for the U.S. Department of Energy Better Buildings Challenge and as a Board member of the Kentucky Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council.  Billie obtained a B.S. from the University of Louisville\, a Master’s of Public Administration from the prestigious Martin School of Public Policy and Administration at the University of Kentucky\, and a Master’s of Science in Education from the College of Education at the University of Kentucky. \nAshwani Vasishth\, Associate Professor of Sustainability and Director\, Center for Sustainability at Ramapo College of New Jersey\nAshwani Vasishth is Associate Professor in Sustainability\, Convener of the undergraduate Sustainability Program (BA)\, and Director of the Center for Sustainability at Ramapo College of New Jersey. He is President of the New Jersey Higher Education Partnership for Sustainability (NJHEPS). He directs as well the AASHE Center for Sustainability Across the Curriculum at RCNJ. He is part of the Environmental Studies Major\, and is a faculty member in both the South India and Peru Study Abroad Convening Groups. His pedagogy is focused on Education for Sustainability from within a transdisciplinary framework\, and within the context of a globalizing International Development paradigm. \nHe has research interests in an ecosystem approach\, urban ecology\, systems thinking and mental models. \nHe received his PhD from the University of Southern California\, Los Angeles\, in Environmental Planning\, and his Master’s Degree from MIT\, Cambridge\, in International Development. He has an undergraduate degree in Architecture from India\, with a focus on vernacular shelter systems.

DESCRIPTION:The National Conservation Training Center (NCTC) in collaboration with the Urban Wildlife Conservation Program (UWCP) is pleased to announce its third webinar\, sponsored by the Urban Bird Treaty Program (UBT Program). This webinar series is open to all who are interested in participating\, so\, please forward to your own partner networks. \nSPEAKER: Mary Coolidge\, Portland Audubon \nDESCRIPTION: Up to 1 billion birds die in window collisions every year in the United States alone\, at all scales of development\, from single family residential to low rise commercial buildings to high rises. Moreover\, light pollution from artificial light at night contributes not only to collisions in migrating bird populations\, but impacts behavior\, movement\, reproduction in many wildlife species. Today\, over a dozen North American cities have developed Bird Safe Building standards\, including San Francisco\, San Jose\, Oakland\, Portland and Toronto\, paving the way for similar efforts in other municipalities. Many cities\, counties and states are also implementing sustainability initiatives to address climate change and reduce energy-efficiency demands\, which presents opportunities to integrate lights out and dark skies initiatives that protect the ecological function of our cities at night. Portland has been a UBT City since 2003\, and Audubon’s Bird Safe Program has been generously funded by a National Fish & Wildlife Foundation grant to educate the public as well as architects\, landscape architects\, designers\, planners\, and elected officials about these issues to ensure that we are designing our built landscape for ecological resilience into the future. From data collection and development of a voluntary Resource Guide\, to legislative advocacy to integrate Bird Safe measures into the city of Portland’s Green Building Policy and zoning code\, we have been on this road for a while. Hood National forests for the last 20 years! This year at Base Camp\, we will not only document the threats to the forest\, but also set a course toward a better future for this ecosystem that supports us all. \nStaff & volunteers will host a family-friendly group camp in a free\, undeveloped site in Mt. Hood National Forest. Base Camp is open to all who wish to join for any length of time\, even if just for one day. Campers support Bark’s work by volunteering to gather critical information about current and past logging projects\, document potential beaver habitat\, swap stories over shared meals\, and much more. As we spend time together in the forest\, we will build connections to environmental\, social\, and other place-based movements.

SUMMARY:Exploitation and Empathy: Navigating the Dynamics between Donors\, Staff\, and Program Participants
DESCRIPTION:Since the term “poverty porn” first appeared in 1981\, much has been said about the exploitation of human suffering to inspire charitable giving. Yet four decades later\, many organizations still struggle to communicate their impact in a way that authentically represents the issue and preserves the dignity of those affected by it. How do we portray our program participants as their own agents of change\, while admitting that they also need our help? How do we emotionally connect funders to our clients\, without simplifying their challenges or minimizing cultural differences? \nIn a refreshing take on this provocative issue\, Caliopy Glaros of Philanthropy without Borders invites attendees to move beyond lexicon and imagery\, to embrace methods that both challenge assumptions and inspire empathy. Drawing from her experience in international donor travel as well as research from social psychology\, she provides an innovative approach to building capacity for empathy while motivating others to action. \nAttendees will leave this session with a new means of evaluating interactions between donors\, staff\, and program participants\, as well as tools they can begin implementing right away.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister below to reserve your seat at this fantastic event!

It is an interactive\, hands-on workshop that will give you the tools to control airflow and stay cool without AC\, save water and energy\, and stay safe during extreme heat. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Goat Haus for this installment of “Home Is Where the Wear Is” (HIWTHI)\, where folks from the OnGoing Community and City Repair will be on point to share medicine making practices using herbs from a typical garden or that can be wildcrafted in the PDX Metro area. \nWe’re organizing our supplies now\, so more info on the exact offerings as we get closer to the event – but we typically facilitate the making of tea bags\, tinctures\, and satchels. \nIf you have appropriate supplies to donate contact volunteer@cityrepair.org. This event is free\, but donations help cover costs of supplies and benefit the City Repair Project. \nA basic supper is provided and potluck welcome! Let’s commune and craft on a cozy summer evening!

SUMMARY:24th Annual Columbia Slough Regatta
DESCRIPTION:Join the Columbia Slough Watershed Council for Regatta\, an on the water paddle festival like no other\, Sunday\, August 11th from 10am to 2pm.  Regatta celebrates recreation opportunities on Portland’s hidden gem of local waterways\, the Columbia Slough.  Regatta is not actually a race; this family friendly event is a fun paddle for experienced paddlers and novice paddlers alike. \nThe event features complimentary 45-minute canoe and kayak rentals (all equipment provided) for registered attendees.  Before and after paddling\, participants can visit with local environmental and water-based organizations\, enjoy hands-on nature activities\, live music and guided tours. Free t-shirts and refreshments will be provided while supplies last. \nAdvanced registration is required below\, or by calling (503) 281-1132. Participants with their own human-powered watercraft and safety equipment are also welcome to register and join the fun. Crews will be available to help unload and transport boats. $10-$60/person or $30-125/family sliding scale suggested donation.  No one will be turned away due to lack of funds!
