DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what it looks like when a child gets to see a 100 year old tree for the first time?  What about the thrill of helping a student discover their role within the watershed?  Do you yearn to finally catch a glimpse of an owl while 10 sets of eyes excitedly follow your finger in the hopes of finding them too? Are you a lifelong learner with a passion for learning\, authentically welcoming diverse students\, and committing to personal growth?  If so\, you might be a Nature Educator!   Without you\, thousands of students each year would miss out on the opportunity to experience the forest firsthand through educational hikes\, activities\, and community learning experiences. \nThis fall\, Friends of Tryon Creek is offering a FREE 1-day orientation to our Field Trip program\, to be held on Tuesday\, September 24th from 10:00 to 2:00 at the Tryon Creek Nature Center (11321 SW Terwilliger Blvd\, Portland\, OR). Designed as a way to get new volunteers looped into our programs through the fall\, this orientation compliments our comprehensive spring training scheduled for late February/early March 2020.  During this 5-hour program\, volunteers will gain knowledge and tools needed to help them be a successful and positive leader and educator in the Tryon Creek field trip setting\, with the intention of recruiting enthusiastic and passionate people to become a part of our family of naturalists\, educators\, leaders\, and learners! \nSince 1970\, Friends of Tryon Creek (FOTC)\, in partnership with Oregon State Parks\, has worked to nurture relationships with nature and connect people to Tryon Creek\, Oregon’s only urban state natural area. Our field trip program relies heavily on volunteer Nature Guide support to lead groups of 5 to 10 students on 2-hour field trips as they explore our unique forest\, learning about the natural and cultural history of this region.  Nature Guides enjoy a strong community and plenty of support – checkout FOTC’s Nature Guide Resource Page to learn more! \nFriends of Tryon Creek is committed to acknowledging social justice\, identity\, and power structures in past and present settings through diverse perspectives. DESCRIPTION:Grief enters our lives through many gateways\, including the death of loved ones\, relationship endings\, intractable conflicts\, chronic illness\, cultural loss\, ancestral trauma\, major life transitions\, or from the overwhelming concerns and social injustice and ecological collapse in our devastated world. Throughout time many traditional cultures have understood the healing and transformative power of grieving in ceremony and within community as a sacred way to honor\, metabolize\, and transmute the energy of grief.​ Sharing our sorrows in a healing circle of deep remembrance\, praise\, mourning\, and celebration of life strengthens our capacity to respond to the challenges of our lives and our world with courage\, compassion\, and wisdom. \nThis daylong event is inspired by the traditional grief rituals of the Dagara tribe of Burkina Faso brought to the West by Sobonfu Somé\, the ancient cross-cultural tradition of lamentation\, and the work and teachings of Francis Weller\, Michael Meade\, Martin Prechtel\, and Joanna Macy. Through the original technologies of ritual\, rhythm\, movement\, storytelling\, poetry\, and song\, we will co-create a brave\, alchemical container to travel deeply into the dark river of grief\, welcome all our emotions\, and open to the mystery of transformation. Metabolizing our grief into gifts of beauty enables us to cultivate the clarity\, vitality\, and resilience that we need to be present to ourselves\, with each other\, and for our world in these turbulent times.

SUMMARY:Mutualism\, deception\, and self-defense: the complex dance of coevolution in insects and plants
DESCRIPTION:Celeste Searles Mazzacano\, PhD \nLearn about some of the fascinating and intricate ways in which plants and insects have evolved to affect each other’s traits and behaviors\, including defensive arms races\, attraction to sweet rewards\, and trickery and death traps. \nCeleste Searles Mazzacano is the Owner and Principal Scientist at CASM Environmental LLC\, where her work focuses on insects\, freshwater mussels\, and other invertebrates. She has a B.S. in Genetics & Cell Biology and a Ph.D. in Entomology from the University of Minnesota. Her research and teaching has taken her from river bottoms to tree canopies and from universities to fish & wildlife agencies\, non-profits\, and independent consulting as she investigates and preserves insect species\, characterizes their impacts on habitats\, and develops management plans that protect the overall ecosystem. As an educator\, she strives to impart her almost excessive enthusiasm about insects to others and engender a greater awareness and appreciation of their functions. \n  \nAll lectures will take place in the Manor House at Leach Botanical Garden \n6704 SE 122nd Ave.\, Portland\, OR  97236. Use Creekside Parking lot \nDoors open at 6:00 pm for refreshments and strolling in the Garden. SUMMARY:ORPA Workshop - Boardman Wetland Nature Park
DESCRIPTION:This one-day workshop in Jennings Lodge (near Milwaukie)\, Oregon will share with attendees the unique story of the Boardman Wetland Nature Park from the initial vision through completion.  Many lessons learned will be shared throughout the day. \nParticipants will learn about the unique partnership between Oak Lodge Water Services District (OLWSD) and North Clackamas Parks and Recreation District (NCPRD) to support acquisition\, public outreach\, design\, and construction with many goals and objectives that the partnership and community shared.  Goals and objectives included increased flood capacity\, water quality\, habitat restoration\, education and recreation.  Participants will also learn about the funding\, land use process\, wetland boardwalk and outdoor classroom design\, and construction including the nature playground. \nThis workshop is perfect for designers\, planners\, maintenance\, education\, and natural resources staff. \nSign up at ORPA.org   Boardman Wetland Workshop Registration Link \nNote: this workshop starts at 3801 SE Concord Road\, Oak Grove\, OR and then attendees will carpool to the site.

She previously led Medical Teams’ community health program for Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazaar\, Bangladesh as an implementing partner of UNHCR and UNICEF. \nSukanya is on the Norwegian Refugee Council’s standby roster as a Humanitarian Communications Expert and worked with International Blue Crescent Relief & Development Foundation in Turkey for the Syrian refugee response. Prior to her humanitarian career\, Sukanya spent three+ years as a Media Production Manager in London\, U.K. She earned her master’s degree in Media Production and her PhD in Refugee and Communications Studies at Birmingham City University (U.K.). \nSukanya is dedicated to promoting community empowerment and linking refugees to critical health care information and services.
