The ZAP program\, Zoo Animal Presenters\, is a three year internship for teens ages 15-16 with a focus on recruiting teens of color and low income teens. Their first year\, the teens provide live animal presentations all over the Portland metro region at Boys and Girls Clubs\, SUN schools\, affordable housing sites and other organizations serving children and families.  Their second year\, the teens act as camp counselors for the Zoo’s Urban Nature Overnight(UNO) program providing camping experiences for youth ages 8-11. The third year of the internship\, the teens act as trainers and mentors for new ZAP teens\, create and provide programming for community organizations\, perform hands-on field conservation\, and explore local natural areas. \n\nThe ZAP program provides training and mentoring with a positive youth development approach. This is a great opportunity for teens that have an interest in conservation\, animals and/or working with children. SUMMARY:Technology\, Globalization and Sustainable Development: Transforming the Industrial State
DESCRIPTION:Nicholas Ashford and Ralph Hall will share their experiences in teaching their graduate level course in “Technology\, Globalization\, and Sustainable Development: Transforming the Industrial State” at MIT\, Virginia Tech\, Harvard and Cambridge Universities\, and the Technical University of Cyprus\, utilizing their revised textbook of the same name. This transdisciplinary text addresses both national and international policies needed to promote sustainable development\, which rest on three pillars: [1] delivering essential goods and services to people; [2] maintaining a good environment\, and [3] creating meaningful opportunities for sufficient earning capacity for people through employment and other ways to broaden capital ownership. Conventional theories of economic growth\, consumption\, employment\, and inequality are challenged and a more modern conceptualization of the workings of the industrial state\, both developed and developing\, is presented. \nThe transformation of the industrial state will be enabled by environmental\, economic\, and trade law\, new economics\, and a more realistic political theory focused on achieving an equitable and secure society in a resource and energy-constrained future. The book was written specifically to enable a more integrated and transdisciplinary approach in teaching sustainable development. \nNicholas A. Ashford is Professor of Technology & Policy and Director of the Technology & Law Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, where he teaches courses in environmental law\, policy\, and economics; law\, technology\, and public policy; and technology\, globalization\, and sustainable development. Dr. Ashford holds both a PhD in Chemistry and a law degree from the University of Chicago\, where he also received graduate education in economics. Without the active involvement of people of color\, our ability to work together to solve our future’s interconnected challenges will be severely hindered. \n  \nThe E42 Emerging Leaders cohort provides a wonderful opportunity to build bridges between environmental leadership and a diverse community of peers and professionals working together to address our environmental challenges with innovative solutions. The prominent opportunity in this project is community building: create space for dialogue among related stakeholder groups to find common ground\, and to build capacity for all partners to work together toward shared goals for a more livable and just society. \n  \nPlease join us. \n  \nThe program will take place Feb-April 2019 consisting of monthly sessions that take place on weekends. We will also have evening community meetings during the week not exceeding once a month. The IPCC special report 1.5 was meant to be the key scientific input into the COP24 meeting\, when the Parties of the Paris Agreement met in Poland with the central aim to keep global temperature rise this century well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to a maximum increase of 1.5°C. This is an ambitious aim acknowledging the fact that global temperatures are already rapidly approaching the 1.5°C target.  \nA team of social science researchers with backgrounds as different as international law\, political economy and social ethnology from the German research center “UFZ” followed the COP24 meeting in Poland within the negotiation area and outside the tents to observe and analyze if and how the urgent message of the IPCC has been taken up in the Katowice agreements. DESCRIPTION:Applications are open with no fee through January 15th\, 2019 for Rogue Farm Corps’ farmer training programs for seasonal positions in 2019 on diverse\, sustainable host farms in 4 chapter locations in Oregon. A $15 application fee starts January 16th through the end of the application period on March 15th\, 2019. Please see attached flyer (good for printing or emailing) and program descriptions below. \nRogue Farm Corps’ Internship Program is a full season entry-level residential internship that combines hands-on training and skills-based education in sustainable agriculture. \nParticipants live and learn on a host farm\, receiving up to 1\,500 hours of on-farm training and learning in-depth skills from their mentor farmer over the course of a farming season. The hands-on\, residential training experience is combined with farm tours\, classes\, and discussion circles throughout the region\, as well as an independent study project\, and access to lots of resources for further learning. Interns are exposed to a vast array of knowledge and expertise by engaging in the daily life of vibrant\, agricultural communities. \nThe Apprenticeship Program is an advanced program for those with farming experience who are seeking mastery in the art and business of sustainable agriculture. Hands-on training\, classes\, weekend workshops around the state\, an independent study project\, and guidance in farm business development will allow participants to gain the skills to plan\, design\, and run integrated farming systems on their own. \nThis full-immersion program is designed for those who have completed an internship program with RFC or a similar organization\, or have two years of on-farm experience. Apprentices live and learn on a host farm\, receive up to two seasons of on-farm training\, and learn in-depth skills from their mentor farmer. The rotating two-year curriculum focuses on advanced farming techniques and business planning and management. \nRogue Farm Corps is the only organization in Oregon that offers structured\, entry-level and advanced farmer education and training programs rooted in real-world farm businesses. We work with host farms located in the Rogue Valley\, the Portland Metro Area\, the South Willamette Valley\, and Central Oregon and offer experiences with vegetable production\, animal husbandry\, dairy\, mixed operations\, and more.
