SUMMARY:Online Climate Action and COVID recovery course
DESCRIPTION:CLIMATE ACTION & COVID-19 RECOVERY — PRACTICAL RESILIENCE STEPS FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES\nShepherding\, organizing and sustaining climate action in rural communities can be a challenge at any time. This is essential work with lots of rewards\, but the challenges are undeniable. Now\, with many rural communities facing COVID-19 health and economic disruptions\, uncertainty about how to carry on business and community life safely\, and looming budget cuts\, many rural climate leaders want to be part of a forward-thinking response that also addresses climate change. \nRural areas face their own challenges and bring their own strengths to the efforts to recover\, rebuild\, reimagine and become more resilient. Rural economies were the hardest hit by the 2008 recession and the slowest to recover. In many places\, the compounding forces of race\, poverty\, and geographic isolation hit hard and could also be seen in the immediate and looming threats of climate change\, even before the coronavirus pandemic put health\, economic\, and racial disparities in the spotlight. \nThis course will help you make climate and resiliency action integral to community recovery even if your town seems too small to make much of an impact or take the reins; even if there is a lot of competition for time\, attention and funds; and even if no one seems to know (or agree on) what to do next. With a focus on what we call “practical resilience\,” this course will help you determine how your community can use its resources to prepare for\, respond and withstand the twin challenges of COVID-19 and climate change\, and at the same time build a better place to live for all of your residents. \nIn this course\, you will: \n\n\nLearn practical ways to understand your community’s systems\, map resources\, and identify opportunities. \n\n\n\n\nLearn proven approaches for building awareness and participation\, designing community climate and resilience solutions\, and taking action together\, including ways to work with political division\, resistance or inertia. \n\n\nAccess templates and examples from other small towns and rural communities for taking action on common leverage points including local food systems\, health care and access\, active transportation and recreation\, community cohesiveness\, and energy self-sufficiency. \n\n\nLearn from peers in other communities about engaging rural communities in resilience solutions. \n\n\nWHO IS THIS FOR?\nCivic groups • Business & economic development leaders • Concerned residents • Elected officials • Conservation organizations • Community organizers • Environmental educators and EE organizations • Extension & community development professionals • High school and college students • Community health groups • COVID response organizers • Climate action leaders • Consultants \nCOURSE INSTRUCTOR\nMichele Archie\, Harbinger principal and co-author of Climate Choices: How Should We Meet the Challenges of a Warming Planet? and the accompanying facilitator guide. Michele has long experience with engagement and action in rural communities across the U.S. and has recently worked with rural communities and researchers on community-driven COVID-19 responses. See her LinkedIn profile. \nSESSION DATES AND TIMES\nFour weekly sessions: \nThursdays – September 17 – October 8\, 2020 \n11 a.m.-12 p.m. PT/2-3 p.m. ET \nMORE DETAILS\n\n\nSessions available for replay in case you need to miss a session or want to review. \n\n\n\n\n$340 early registration discount through Aug. 31\, $425 regular course fee. \n\n\nDiscounts for multiple participants from the same organization: \n\n\n$290 each for 2-4 participants \n\n\n$250 each for 5 or more \n\n\n\n\nLearn More & Register Here

SUMMARY:What has COVID-19 taught us? “Build Back Better” in the Era of Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:UNESCO recently released its Education for Sustainable Development for 2030 framework – ‘Education for Sustainable Development: Towards achieving the SDGs’ urges us to reflect on our past actions and re-focus on achieving the SDGs. The panel will take the main principles from the UNESCO report and will invite various stakeholders to reflect on their practices over the past COVID-19 period and discuss how their practices have changed over this course. \nKey questions that will shape the discussion are- What have we learned from COVID-19 and how does our learning transform into informed practices towards sustainable development? Given the ever-changing education policy due to COVID-19\, the panel will focus on sustainability practices at schools and at homes that continue to neglected. For example\, food wastage\, energy wastage\, plastic pollution\, air travel\, and carbon emissions. This panel will help to reflect on building back better keeping sustainability as a lens. Teachers could reflect on the curriculum in school\, parents reflect on sustainability practices at home and with their children. Academics and scholars provide a critical perspective on UNESCO’s 2030 framework and suggest the next steps. Practitioners narrate how this past experience has shaped-up their implementation on the ground. Policymakers reflect on the policy gaps. \n\nThe panel will highlight discussion points that will help to “Build Back Better” keeping sustainability in mind. It will provide a critical perspective as well as concrete steps forward to make this planet a more equitable place to inhabit. It will reflect on gaps and turn them into opportunities to reflect and take action on. The participants will leave the discussion with clear ideas and objectives on how they can recover from this pandemic with a concrete vision for a sustainable future. \nRegister: HERE

SUMMARY:Making Cities Resilient: Developing Local DRR and Resilience Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Over the past 20 years\, disasters have affected 4.4 billion people\,\ncaused USD 2 trillion of damage\, and killed 1.3 million people. Disasters have affected people living in developing countries and\, in particular\, the most vulnerable communities within these countries. \nParticularly in the context of increased urbanization\, the urban risk continues to rise. The vulnerability of cities to disasters is growing especially as poor people settle in high-risk urban areas. Unfortunately\, the planning and development of cities have given little consideration to the consequences of hazards such as earthquakes\, hydro-meteorological risks\, and others. The implication of this reality is the need for countries to focus on creating a safer world for urban dwellers and developing a series of innovative approaches to build resilience. \nThis e-learning course aims to strengthen the capacities of government professionals to design and implement plans and programs that reduce disaster risk and enhance resilience. \nCourse begins 14 September 2020 for the duration of 12 weeks. The price is $100.00 and the course will be discussing the Decentralize Cooperation Programme\, the environment\, climate change\, governance and local development. To be facilitated by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) \nClick here to register and for more information: https://www.unitar.org/event/full-catalog/making-cities-resilient-developing-local-disaster-risk-reduction-and-resilience-0

SUMMARY:UNESCO World Conference on ESD - Pre-conference workshops
DESCRIPTION:Join UNESCO for a global series of online workshops on how to transform society through learning with Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)\, launching in September 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a tragic impact on human life around the world: killing hundreds of thousands of people\, causing global economic decline and school closures in over 180 countries. It has challenged the structures of our societies and our ways of life. This disruption also presents a historic chance to redesign our societies and reroute from the current path. UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Education\, Stefania Giannini\, has called upon governments to “build back better”\, and change education to meet the climate emergency through Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and the Agenda 2030. ESD reassesses what we learn\, where we learn and how we learn to ensure we develop the knowledge\, skills\, values and attitudes that enable us to make informed decisions and actions on global problems such as the climate crisis and the COVID-19 crisis. \n\n\n\nTransforming learning to transform societies towards sustainability is the aim of the ESD for 2030 framework. This roadmap for ESD in 2020-2030 will be officially launched at the UNESCO World Conference on ESD taking place on 17-19 May 2021\, in Berlin\, Germany. In the lead-up to the World Conference\, UNESCO invite you to a series of ESD online workshops in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany\, and with the German Commission for UNESCO as advisory partner. The discussions and results from the series of online workshops will be used to further develop the conference program and help shape the agenda in Berlin next year. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUPCOMING WORKSHOPS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n#1: The big conversation: ESD and the world beyond Covid-19\n9 September 2020\, 12:30 GMT+2  (3:30 am Pacific) \nCOVID-19 has challenged many aspects of our lives\, but also provided an opportunity for global change. How can ESD contribute to this transformation? To kick-start the series\, the first online workshop is designed as a joint thinking process to collect observations and questions on ESD and the world beyond this pandemic. It will be a jumping off point for a number of topics that will be discussed in the upcoming workshops. \n\nAgenda\nMore information\nRegistration is now open\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n#2: ESD in remote and digital settings: Lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic\n14 October 2020\, 10:00 GMT+2 \nThe global pandemic saw school closures in over 180 countries. This workshop will reviews examples of ESD learning in digital and remote setting during the pandemic; and explores ways to ensure that ESD learning continues under such challenging circumstances. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n#3: Youth\, ESD and resilience: Empowering and mobilizing young people under crisis\n11 November 2020\, 14:00 GMT+2 \nESD equips young people with knowledge\, skills\, values and attitudes be resilient under challenging situations\, with a particular attention on the role of social and emotional learning.  In the third workshop in our series\, we hear from young people involved in ESD programmes about their experiences before and during the pandemic\, as well as their vision for the future. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n#4: ESD and global health: Inter-linkage of the health of people and planet\n9 December 2020\, 12:30 GMT+2 \nFocuses on the interconnectedness of the health of people and planet as highlighted through the COVID-19 pandemic\, and questions how this can be better reflected in ESD practices. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n#5: ESD and Climate Emergency: ‘Bend the curve for climate change’\n10 February 2021\, 10:00 GMT+2 \nRaises the parallels between the pandemic and climate emergency and discusses how the lessons learned from the public response to the Covid-19 crisis can help ‘flatten the curve of climate change’\, in particular through ESD’s contribution. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n#6: ESD and lifestyle: Re-designing consumption and production\n10 March 2021\, 14:00 GMT+2 \nReflects on the trends in consumption and production observed during the pandemic\, such as re-defining of our daily necessity and the return of single-use plastic\, and highlights ways ESD can accelerate transformation towards a more sustainable economy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n#7: ESD for 2030 framework and the Berlin Conference: Time to act – Now or Never\n14 April 2021\, 12:30 GMT+2 \nSummarizes the learnings from the series of online workshops and highlights the focus areas of the new framework ESD for 2030\, as well as its roadmap on the way forward\, from UNESCO World Conference on ESD in Berlin\, Germany and beyond.

SUMMARY:COVID COMPLEXITIES – A GLOBAL TOWN HALL
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 has touched every part of the world but its effects and the reaction of different countries has been uneven. In an interconnected world we need to understand the pandemic’s impact beyond our borders. Importantly\, the progress toward a COVID-19 vaccine and therapeutic treatments is a global pursuit. There are\, as well\, already no shortage of changes made and those to come in reaction to the global catastrophe – in our communities\, technology\, health and science\, government performance\, elections\, the global economy and our lifestyles. \nA group of World Affairs Councils – nationwide\, independent\, nonpartisan educational organizations – is joining together with an international network of journalists and specialists to organize conversations over the course of two evenings in early September. The goal is to help Americans understand the impact of the pandemic in an interactive program open to all. \nWe invite you to join this unique partnership to inform and inspire Americans to know more about COVID-19’s impact around the world\, the race for a vaccine and how the vaccine has changed the world. \nOn September 2nd and 3rd journalists\, physicians\, researchers\, NGO officials and others will come together to discuss the global impact of COVID-19 and the pursuit of a vaccine. \nThe program is brought to the public in partnership with many of the nationwide networks of World Affairs Councils and an international network of journalists. \nRegister for this event here.
