SUMMARY:Friends of Tryon Creek EcoCrew
DESCRIPTION:Here at Tryon Creek there is a long tradition of community lead park stewardship. You can join these efforts to maintain and improve the park by volunteering for Eco Crew. Led by Friends of Tryon Creek staff instruction\, gloves and tools are always provided. \nVolunteer tasks include trail maintenance and invasive plant removal (like raking\, brush clearing\, and pulling ivy.) Activities include a two mile hike\, working off trail in uneven terrain in all weather conditions. Volunteers are best prepared when wearing long pants\, long shirts\, multiple layers and sturdy shoes are all a great idea! \nBesides dirty gloves and muddy feet\, at the end of each event\, it is our hope that Eco Crew volunteers take home a feeling of accomplishment for the work they’ve done and a sense of belonging to a larger community of park stewards.

SUMMARY:Ghost Net Landscape by Emily Miller
DESCRIPTION:“Ghost Net Landscape” by Emily Miller opens October 7th at the Kathrin Cawein Gallery.  The collaborative exhibit will feature Emily Miller’s finished sculptures created from plastic marine debris (“ghost net”) as well as over 1\,000 pounds of unprocessed fishing rope and net.  \nFor four weeks\, Emily will be working in the gallery alongside visitors\, processing the materials and creating finished sculptures. Artists and visitors of any artistic ability are encouraged to visit the space\, experiment with the material\, and create their own pieces. At the end of the exhibit\, visitors are encouraged to take materials home — continuing the idea of sustainable use of reclaimed materials. \nThe sculptures\, or baskets\, begin as fishing rope washed ashore on the beaches of Maine\, Oregon\, and Kauai. Cleaned\, unraveled\, and restitched\, the colorful rope becomes a collection of unique baskets accented with local stones and other treasures.  \nThe Kathrin Cawein Gallery is located in Scott Hall at Pacific University\, 2043 College Way\, Forest Grove\, Oregon. The gallery is open Monday-Friday\, from 1-5 PM\, through October 31st. An opening reception will be held Monday\, October 7th from 4-6 PM; the closing reception will be held Tuesday\, October 29th from 4-6 PM. \nIn partnership with Washington County Open Studios\, the gallery is also open Saturday\, October 19th and Sunday\, October 20th from 11-5 PM.  \nJoin Artist Emily Miller to make a visible difference in marine conservation\, transforming dangerous marine waste into objects of value.   \nThe Ghost Net Landscape exhibit will be a collaborative gallery space in partnership with CALC\, Eden Acres\, Pacific University\, SOLVE Oregon\, Oregon State Parks\, Surfrider Kauai\, Port of Grays Harbor\, and Ocean Gold Seafood. The exhibit is funded in part by the Regional Arts & Culture Council.

SUMMARY:Skills for a Greener Future: Taking Stock and Looking Ahead
DESCRIPTION:The transition to an inclusive and environmentally sustainable development model will most likely disrupt labor markets. New jobs will be created and current jobs will be destroyed. \nIn the process of job creation and destruction\, the availability of the right skills will help pave the way to a productive green structural transformation. In managing the transition\, skills development policies that help upskill and reskill workers\, match skills demand and supply\, among others\, will be crucial. \nAgainst this background\, this GAIN Webinar will explore the linkages between skills and the Just Transition. Based on the recently presented ILO report Skills for a Greener Future\, it will shed light on the need for skills development policies that allow countries to seize employment opportunities and minimize the costs of the Just Transition. The report is based on a series of detailed country studies covering 32 countries and complemented with rigorous multi-regional economic modeling. \nThe Webinar will combine the presentation of the main insights of the report and the presentation of the modeling methodology used to assess the skills needs for green jobs\, applicable both at the national and regional levels. A 15 minutes Q&A session will end the webinar.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: Ghost Net Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Ghost Net Landscape is an interactive art installation and performance\, in which Emily Miller collaborates with visitors to transform piles of “ghost net” fishing rope waste into sculptural\, tactile basket forms. The project involves three major components: a massive pile of ghost net rescued from our coastline\, a sewing machine workstation where Emily will create the sculptures during the exhibit\, and a time-lapse video documenting the process. \nAfter four years working with ghost net\, this project translates Emily’s experience into a gallery setting\, creating a powerful sculptural presence from one of the most abundant and dangerous sources of ocean trash. The bright colors\, organic forms\, and tactile textures of each sculpture express the continued allure of plastic despite its status as hazardous marine waste.

SUMMARY:Teaching Global Climate Change in Your Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Follow National Geographic Explorers to the treetops of the rain forests\, the reefs of Mexico\, the glaciers of Iceland\, and the shores of the Chesapeake Bay as they find solutions to global climate change. Practice innovative ways to visualize the changing climate with your students as we all seek a planet in balance. \nDescription\nEarth’s global climate is changing\, bringing numerous changes to the planet and the organisms that live on it. Scientific instruments around the world show that our global temperature increased by over 1°C during the second half of the 20th century. Consequences of this observed warming include substantial melting of glaciers\, rising sea levels\, and increased risk of drought\, wildfires\, and plant and animal extinctions. \nThis online course integrates scientific content and pedagogical practices that are important for teaching global climate change at the middle school level. In particular\, this course will help you to: \n\nExamine your own understanding of global climate change and human impacts working through activities that connect to big climate change concepts\,\nModify existing activities and create new lessons about global climate change to incorporate into your own instruction\,\nDevelop a library of tools and resources that you can use to inform your future instructional design around climate change\,\nUse the NGSS science and engineering practices (constructing explanations and creating models) to develop your own and students’ understanding of the concepts\, and\nAnalyze student thinking about climate change through video cases.\n\nCredit validation is available for this course from the University of San Diego. This class runs October 2-November 20.
