SUMMARY:Ghost Net Landscape by Emily Miller
DESCRIPTION:“Ghost Net Landscape” by Emily Miller opens October 7th at the Kathrin Cawein Gallery.  The collaborative exhibit will feature Emily Miller’s finished sculptures created from plastic marine debris (“ghost net”) as well as over 1\,000 pounds of unprocessed fishing rope and net.  \nFor four weeks\, Emily will be working in the gallery alongside visitors\, processing the materials and creating finished sculptures. Artists and visitors of any artistic ability are encouraged to visit the space\, experiment with the material\, and create their own pieces. At the end of the exhibit\, visitors are encouraged to take materials home — continuing the idea of sustainable use of reclaimed materials. \nThe sculptures\, or baskets\, begin as fishing rope washed ashore on the beaches of Maine\, Oregon\, and Kauai. Cleaned\, unraveled\, and restitched\, the colorful rope becomes a collection of unique baskets accented with local stones and other treasures.  \nThe Kathrin Cawein Gallery is located in Scott Hall at Pacific University\, 2043 College Way\, Forest Grove\, Oregon. The gallery is open Monday-Friday\, from 1-5 PM\, through October 31st. DESCRIPTION:Climate change poses a major threat to sustainable development. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\, ‘Poverty and disadvantage are expected to increase in some populations as global warming increases; limiting global warming to 1.5°C\, compared with 2°C\, could reduce the number of people both exposed to climate-related risks and susceptible to poverty by up to several hundred million by 2050 (medium confidence)’ (IPCC\, 2018: Summary for Policymakers. In: Global Warming of 1.5°C\,B.5.1.) \n(https://www.ipcc.ch/sr15/chapter/spm/). \nFor this reason\, it is important for everyone concerned about sustainable development to take action on climate change. DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to inform you of the upcoming third edition of the online course\, Unleashing the power of the private sector in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development running from 14 October to 15 November 2019. This five-week course introduces participants to the different types of private sector entities and demonstrates how strategically engaging with them can help implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It introduces participants to tools to identify common objectives to create shared value and emphasises the importance of mitigating risk. The course also reinforces the need for participants to advocate for placing sustainable development at the core of businesses and investing. The five weeks of the course will focus on: \n\nWeek 1: How partnerships are vital to the 2030 Agenda.\nWeek 2: The role of the private sector in implementing the 2030 Agenda.\nWeek 3: How to pursue partnerships with the private sector: frameworks for action.\nWeek 4: Due Diligence: protecting against reputational risk.\nWeek 5: Engaging with the private sector: way forward\n\nAt the end of the 5-weeks\, participants will: \n\nBenefit from an in-depth understanding of the imperative to engage with the private sector for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the concept of shared value;\nUnderstand that the private sector is not a monolithic entity and how it can be engaged at every level\, international\, national and local.\nDemonstrate an understanding of frameworks to design and tools to develop partnerships with the private sector;\nDemonstrate an improved understanding of the importance of due diligence before pursuing engagements;\nBe able to articulate the need for and advocate for more private sector engagement in achieving the 2030 Agenda.\n\nUNSSC online courses are designed to deliver maximum learning outcomes through optimal time investments into carefully chosen high-quality learning materials. DESCRIPTION:“Ghost Net Landscape” by Emily Miller opens October 7th at the Kathrin Cawein Gallery.  The collaborative exhibit will feature Emily Miller’s finished sculptures created from plastic marine debris (“ghost net”) as well as over 1\,000 pounds of unprocessed fishing rope and net.  \nFor four weeks\, Emily will be working in the gallery alongside visitors\, processing the materials and creating finished sculptures. Artists and visitors of any artistic ability are encouraged to visit the space\, experiment with the material\, and create their own pieces. At the end of the exhibit\, visitors are encouraged to take materials home — continuing the idea of sustainable use of reclaimed materials. \nThe sculptures\, or baskets\, begin as fishing rope washed ashore on the beaches of Maine\, Oregon\, and Kauai. Cleaned\, unraveled\, and restitched\, the colorful rope becomes a collection of unique baskets accented with local stones and other treasures.  \nThe Kathrin Cawein Gallery is located in Scott Hall at Pacific University\, 2043 College Way\, Forest Grove\, Oregon. The gallery is open Monday-Friday\, from 1-5 PM\, through October 31st. SUMMARY:Friends of Tryon Creek EcoCrew
DESCRIPTION:Here at Tryon Creek there is a long tradition of community lead park stewardship. You can join these efforts to maintain and improve the park by volunteering for Eco Crew. Led by Friends of Tryon Creek staff instruction\, gloves and tools are always provided. \nVolunteer tasks include trail maintenance and invasive plant removal (like raking\, brush clearing\, and pulling ivy.) Activities include a two mile hike\, working off trail in uneven terrain in all weather conditions. Volunteers are best prepared when wearing long pants\, long shirts\, multiple layers and sturdy shoes are all a great idea! \nBesides dirty gloves and muddy feet\, at the end of each event\, it is our hope that Eco Crew volunteers take home a feeling of accomplishment for the work they’ve done and a sense of belonging to a larger community of park stewards.

SUMMARY:Skills for a Greener Future: Taking Stock and Looking Ahead
DESCRIPTION:The transition to an inclusive and environmentally sustainable development model will most likely disrupt labor markets. New jobs will be created and current jobs will be destroyed. \nIn the process of job creation and destruction\, the availability of the right skills will help pave the way to a productive green structural transformation. In managing the transition\, skills development policies that help upskill and reskill workers\, match skills demand and supply\, among others\, will be crucial. \nAgainst this background\, this GAIN Webinar will explore the linkages between skills and the Just Transition. Based on the recently presented ILO report Skills for a Greener Future\, it will shed light on the need for skills development policies that allow countries to seize employment opportunities and minimize the costs of the Just Transition. The report is based on a series of detailed country studies covering 32 countries and complemented with rigorous multi-regional economic modeling. \nThe Webinar will combine the presentation of the main insights of the report and the presentation of the modeling methodology used to assess the skills needs for green jobs\, applicable both at the national and regional levels. A 15 minutes Q&A session will end the webinar.

SUMMARY:Ghost Net Landscape by Emily Miller
DESCRIPTION:“Ghost Net Landscape” by Emily Miller opens October 7th at the Kathrin Cawein Gallery.  The collaborative exhibit will feature Emily Miller’s finished sculptures created from plastic marine debris (“ghost net”) as well as over 1\,000 pounds of unprocessed fishing rope and net.  \nFor four weeks\, Emily will be working in the gallery alongside visitors\, processing the materials and creating finished sculptures. Artists and visitors of any artistic ability are encouraged to visit the space\, experiment with the material\, and create their own pieces. At the end of the exhibit\, visitors are encouraged to take materials home — continuing the idea of sustainable use of reclaimed materials. \nThe sculptures\, or baskets\, begin as fishing rope washed ashore on the beaches of Maine\, Oregon\, and Kauai. Cleaned\, unraveled\, and restitched\, the colorful rope becomes a collection of unique baskets accented with local stones and other treasures.  \nThe Kathrin Cawein Gallery is located in Scott Hall at Pacific University\, 2043 College Way\, Forest Grove\, Oregon. The gallery is open Monday-Friday\, from 1-5 PM\, through October 31st. An opening reception will be held Monday\, October 7th from 4-6 PM; the closing reception will be held Tuesday\, October 29th from 4-6 PM. \nIn partnership with Washington County Open Studios\, the gallery is also open Saturday\, October 19th and Sunday\, October 20th from 11-5 PM.  \nJoin Artist Emily Miller to make a visible difference in marine conservation\, transforming dangerous marine waste into objects of value.   \nThe Ghost Net Landscape exhibit will be a collaborative gallery space in partnership with CALC\, Eden Acres\, Pacific University\, SOLVE Oregon\, Oregon State Parks\, Surfrider Kauai\, Port of Grays Harbor\, and Ocean Gold Seafood. The exhibit is funded in part by the Regional Arts & Culture Council.
