SUMMARY:Exploring Ocean Frontiers: Deep-Sea Corals\, Real-Life Data\, and Collaborative Science
DESCRIPTION:NOAA Planet Stewards is pleased to welcome Dr. Heather Coleman\, coordinator of NOAA’s Deep Sea Coral Research & Technology Program; Eva Barnett\, Outreach Manager for Green Fire Productions; and curriculum developers Jennifer Buffett and Sarah Lockman as our featured speakers this month. \nDeep-sea corals and sponges support complex and productive ecosystems but are still largely undiscovered. These animals can live for hundreds or even thousands of years. They can grow to the size of a minivan or in reefs up to 300 feet off the seafloor. They support commercially valuable fish habitat in every region of the U.S. and hold great biomedical potential. \nNOAA’s Deep Sea Coral Research and Technology Program coordinates research on deep-sea coral and sponge ecosystems building our limited understanding of where and how they exist. New species are identified every year\, and researchers are constantly learning about processes such as coral growth and recovery from damage. \nThis presentation will cover recent advances in the science and protection of deep-sea corals\, and introduce newly released lessons and activities that build understanding of these hidden ecosystems and other crucial ocean topics. \nThe Exploring Ocean Frontiers Resources accompany the award-winning Ocean Frontiers film series\, portraying how unlikely allies – government\, industry\, science and conservation – are working together to find solutions that benefit ocean ecosystems and economies. These new secondary lessons and post-secondary discussion guides are inquiry-based\, NGSS-connected and full of engaging activities designed to facilitate classroom explorations into ocean planning and stewardship\, collaborative science\, marine biodiversity\, ocean data portals and stakeholder engagement. The materials are available to teachers at no cost.

SUMMARY:Creating Healthy Communities: The Connection Between Nature and Health Equity
DESCRIPTION:The Intertwine Alliance is excited to continue its series of Health & Nature Forums with an event focusing on health equity. \nHealth equity\, the creation of accessible pathways to health resources and benefits for everyone in the community\, has become a greater focus of attention in health care. As we examine the many factors that influence one’s wellbeing\, issues like economic status\, jobs\, transportation and housing are now seen and understood as critical determinants of health\, lessening the focus on one’s genetic makeup. In addition\, leaders are looking beyond these social issues to ideas that the environment itself can play a larger role in determining individual and community health. \nJoin other community health and conservation leaders for an in-depth exploration of these ideas\, and help us formulate creative strategies for injecting nature into this important community-wide conversation. We’ll announce speakers\, panels and other details soon. \nThis will be the seventh Health & Nature Forum since the series launched back in 2014\, and we look forward to seeing both return and new faces. Questions? Please email Program Director David Cohen at david@theintertwine.org. \n

SUMMARY:Designing Sustainable Cities: What About the People?
DESCRIPTION:Highlighting the need for a socially-aware planning process when building resilient cities.\nCan urban planning and design make cities more resilient? Join WRI’s Robin King and University of Oxford’s Cathy Baldwin as they answer this question\, which they address in their new book\, Social Sustainability\, Climate Resilience and Community-Based Urban Development: What About the People? \nUrban communities around the world face increased stress from natural disasters linked to climate change and urban pressures such as increased heat\, flooding\, and insufficient services. Fourteen case studies from around the world — focusing on housing\, public space\, transport\, and natural disasters like flooding and earthquakes — stress how social networks and social cohesion may be even more important for resilient cities than solely their physical structures. \nRobin King and Cathy Baldwin explore the relationship between urban built environments and pro-community behaviors and psychological responses\, which include positive acts and states of mind that are beneficial to communities and their residents. \nJoin the conversation as the researchers present their framework\, case studies and recommendations. Natalie Elwell\, from WRI’s Gender and Social Equity Initiative\, will moderate the discussion.
