SUMMARY:Volcano Naturalist Program
DESCRIPTION:The Mount St. Helens Institute and the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument are please to announce the seventh year of the Volcano Naturalist Program. The Volcano Naturalist Program is an exciting in-depth look at Mount St. Helens (and our PNW volcanoes). \nThe Volcano Naturalist Course is a 12-week certification program offered by the Mount St. Helens Institute and U.S. Forest Service. Students in this course will have the opportunity to learn about the natural history of Mount St. Helens and southwest Washington. Each class takes an in-depth look at a different subject\, including the mountain’s eruptive history\, the ecology of the blast zone\, the cultural history of Mount St. Helens\, and much more. Classes are led by an instructor who is an expert in his/her field. With over 40 hours of classroom instruction\, and three hands-on field trips\, participants leave the class not only as a certified Volcano Naturalist\, but with a greater understanding and appreciation for the powerful geologic and ecological forces at play in our community. \n“A visit to Johnston Ridge Observatory is like seeing an iceberg from a cruise ship; the Volcano Naturalist Program is a look at the 90% of the iceberg beneath the water.”  – David Newcomb\, Volcano Naturalist Graduate 2013. \nThe 2019 course consists of 12 classes on Wednesdays\, 6-9 p.m. at Clark College from February 6th through May 1st. The course registration is $360 for the general public\, with registration discounts available to Mount St. Helens Institute members and volunteers. Registration includes books and all course materials required to become a Volcano Naturalist. Clock hours are available for teachers taking Volcano Naturalist classes. \nFor more information and to apply to the program\, visit https://www.mshinstitute.org/learn/volcano-naturalist-program.html

The Boot Camp is a week-long\, intensive training course to help mid-career professionals utilize innovative and effective financing strategies for land and resource conservation\, restoration\, and stewardship. \nThe application for the 2019 Boot Camp will be open from January 15th – February 15th\, 2019. Each year\, our Boot Camp accepts 30 participants. Please take some time to review the questions on the sample application HERE and prepare your answers ahead of time before filling out the live application form below. It is best to type out your responses to the essay questions in a separate document and copy and paste them into the application form. \nAPPLY HERE\nFor more information on applying to the Boot Camp\, please refer to our frequently asked questions: \nWho should apply?\nMid-career professionals integrating conservation finance into their land and resource conservation work\, including (but not limited to) land trust and NGO professionals\, public agency professionals\, foundation officers\, board members\, private sector investors\, business executives\, legal counselors\, and academics. Applicants who are starting or currently working on conservation finance projects that they are interested in having workshopped by peers and presenters at the course are strongly encouraged to apply. We do not generally accept current students\, given the applied nature of the course. \nWhen will I hear back?\nWe will communicate decisions in March. After the first round of decisions is made\, we may re-open applications in the case that we have remaining seats in the course. \nHow are decisions made?\nApplicants are selected based on a combination of factors including the applicability of course content to their work\, a demonstrated intent to apply what they learn\, and cohort balance and composition. \nIs there a waitlist?\nYes\, if there is sufficient interest. When decisions are made\, we will give selected applicants the option to be added to the waitlist. \nWhat are the costs of attending?\nTuition is $2000 plus a small processing fee\, which includes all local transportation and meals. Attendees are responsible for covering costs associated with lodging and transportation to/from the course. \nAre scholarships available?\nTuition scholarships may be made available for applicants whose organizations demonstrate financial need. There will be a question in the application to detail your need for a scholarship. \nIs the course open to applicants outside the United States?\nWe are happy to welcome participants who bring an international perspective to our course and have had many non-US attendees. However\, we would like to note that the course content is based on the U.S. legal code and that we primarily draw upon domestic case studies and examples. Although some topics may be analogous to international projects\, we cannot guarantee the tools and strategies covered in the source will be directly applicable to your work. \nIf you have further questions\, please contact Allegra Wrocklage at awrocklage@conservation-finance.org.

SUMMARY:President's Environmental Youth Award
DESCRIPTION:The President’s Environmental Youth Award (PEYA) recognizes outstanding environmental projects by K-12 youth. The PEYA program promotes awareness of our nation’s natural resources and encourages positive community involvement. Since 1971\, the President of the United States has joined with EPA to recognize young people for protecting our nation’s air\, water\, land\, and ecology. It is one of the most important ways EPA and the Administration demonstrate commitment to environmental stewardship efforts created and conducted by our nation’s youth. \nEach year the PEYA program honors a wide variety of projects developed by young individuals\, school classes (kindergarten through high school)\, summer camps\, public interest groups\, and youth organizations to promote environmental awareness. Thousands of young people from all 50 states and the U.S. territories have submitted projects to EPA for consideration. Winning projects in the past have covered a wide range of subject areas\, including: \n \n\nrestoring native habitats\nrecycling in schools and communities\nconstruction of nature preserves\ntree planting\ninstalling renewable energy projects\ncreating videos\, skits and newsletters that focused on environmental issues\nparticipating in many other creative sustainability efforts\n\nEvaluation results consistently demonstrate that participation in the PEYA program is frequently a life-changing experience for many of the young people and their project sponsors.

SUMMARY:Progressing National SDGs Implementations
DESCRIPTION:What are Voluntary National Reviews? \nVoluntary National Reviews are one of the key mechanisms to track the implementation progress of the commitments enshrined in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. \nPresented annually at the UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF)\, they aim to promote accountability to citizens\, support effective international cooperation\, and foster exchange of best practices and mutual learning. \nWhy attend this webinar? \n2019 marks the end of the first 4-year cycle of reviews of the SDGs\, so it is an important year to assess overall progress and consider potential improvements to the process. \nThis online launch will share the main findings of a study commissioned by civil society\, analysing the VNRs and a sample of civil society reports produced in 2017 for the HLPF. The assessment identifies best practices and provides recommendations for improving implementation and the VNR process and reports\, as well as strengthening accountability around the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

SUMMARY:Metro’s 2019 Nature in Neighborhoods Grants
DESCRIPTION:Want to restore and care for nature in your community? If you have a vision for improving water quality\, creating fish and wildlife habitat\, getting rid of weeds\, or restoring nature in the Portland metropolitan area\, a Metro Nature in Neighborhoods restoration grant can help get your idea off the ground.  \n  \nGrant recipients have planted native species at Ross Island\, improved water quality and amphibian habitat in Willow Creek\, andrestored habitat at the Sandy River Delta for fish\, migrating birds and turtles all while engaging local residents in being stewards of their local natural areas. \n  \nMetro grants expand partnerships to inspire new approaches to restoration\, including economic and environmental equity. In the Jade District\, APANO\, Columbia Land Trust and Audubon worked together with private landowners to increase community stewardship and improve habitat.  In Hillsboro\, Depave transformed the M&M Marketplace’s parking lot from gray to green by engaging community members that included pavement removal\, rain garden creation\, and native plant installation.  Momentum Alliance and Northwest Youth Corps co-created a diverse conservation leadership program for youth interns with year-round programming and coaching. \n  \nMetro’s Nature in Neighborhood restoration and community stewardship grants supports programs like these. \n  \nThis round of grants is possible thanks to support from voters\, who in 2016 renewed the parks and natural areas levy\, extending funding to 2023. New this round\, the restoration and community stewardship grants will be offered every two years. \n  \nThe restoration and community stewardship grants program will award $700\,000 this year. One- or two-year grants are up to $100\,000. \n  \nGroups throughout greater Portland are encouraged to apply. \n  \nClick HERE to learn more about Metro restoration and community stewardship grants and fill out a simple application by January 29\, 2019. \n  \nTo learn more and ask questions\, contact the grants coordinator\, Crista Gardner\, at Crista.Gardner@oregonmetro.gov.

SUMMARY:Open: The Progressive Case for Free Trade\, Immigration & Global Capital
DESCRIPTION:With the winds of trade wars blowing as they have not done in decades\, and critics on both left and right flirting with protectionism\, economist Kimberly Clausing of Reed College\, explores how a free and open economy may continue to be a better way to advance the interests of working Americans. Why does globalization have a bad name – does it\, as liberal critics say\, exploit the poor and undermine labor? Or on the conservative critique\, does globalization tilt the field against advanced economies? Join us for a compelling discussion on open economies\, on immigration and newcomers’ role in growth\, innovation\, and entrepreneurship\, and – against a backdrop of fragile international bi- and multi-lateral agreements – what the future of free trade looks like. \nKimberly Clausing is Thormund Miller and Walter Mintz Professor of Economics at Reed College. She is one of the country’s leading experts on the taxation of multinational corporations\, a subject on which she has testified before Congress. Clausing has written for the New York Timesand Fortune and spoken on National Public Radio.

SUMMARY:Civic Ecology: A Citizen-Driven Framework for Communities
DESCRIPTION:Much of the conversation around sustainable development has focused on designing better “hardware” – energy efficient buildings; renewable energy; leaner\, greener infrastructure. While these manifestations of sustainability in the built environment are important\, they are not the whole solution. Great communities have robust “software”\, the self-initiated\, self-perpetuating activities and social networks of local citizens. The Civic Ecology Institute\, led by Portland-based SERA Architects\, seeks to illuminates how that software and hardware fit together to constitute a complete sustainable community. \nThe Civic Ecology Institute works with neighborhood stakeholders to design a grass roots framework for community resilience that is civic-public-private partnership based. Civic Ecology integrates whole systems thinking with strong democracy in the service of making great neighborhoods. Through training\, facilitation and project work\, Civic Ecology helps communities\, local government and the private sector co-create a shared vision of a prosperous future and then make it happen. \nIN THIS WEBINAR\, YOU WILL LEARN:\n\nHow to incorporate grass roots systems thinking into neighborhood-scale planning and design projects\nAbout a specific tool – resource flow mapping – that has been used to integrate grass roots knowledge into neighborhood and district visioning and goal setting\nHear specific case studies that have incorporated the Civic Ecology toolkit and the outcomes it has produced.\n\n\nPresented by Tim Smith\nPrincipal\, AIA\, AICP\, SERA Architects

DESCRIPTION:Applications are open with no fee through January 15th\, 2019 for Rogue Farm Corps’ farmer training programs for seasonal positions in 2019 on diverse\, sustainable host farms in 4 chapter locations in Oregon. A $15 application fee starts January 16th through the end of the application period on March 15th\, 2019. Please see attached flyer (good for printing or emailing) and program descriptions below. \nRogue Farm Corps’ Internship Program is a full season entry-level residential internship that combines hands-on training and skills-based education in sustainable agriculture. \nParticipants live and learn on a host farm\, receiving up to 1\,500 hours of on-farm training and learning in-depth skills from their mentor farmer over the course of a farming season. The hands-on\, residential training experience is combined with farm tours\, classes\, and discussion circles throughout the region\, as well as an independent study project\, and access to lots of resources for further learning. Interns are exposed to a vast array of knowledge and expertise by engaging in the daily life of vibrant\, agricultural communities. \nThe Apprenticeship Program is an advanced program for those with farming experience who are seeking mastery in the art and business of sustainable agriculture. Hands-on training\, classes\, weekend workshops around the state\, an independent study project\, and guidance in farm business development will allow participants to gain the skills to plan\, design\, and run integrated farming systems on their own. \nThis full-immersion program is designed for those who have completed an internship program with RFC or a similar organization\, or have two years of on-farm experience. Apprentices live and learn on a host farm\, receive up to two seasons of on-farm training\, and learn in-depth skills from their mentor farmer. The rotating two-year curriculum focuses on advanced farming techniques and business planning and management. \nRogue Farm Corps is the only organization in Oregon that offers structured\, entry-level and advanced farmer education and training programs rooted in real-world farm businesses. We work with host farms located in the Rogue Valley\, the Portland Metro Area\, the South Willamette Valley\, and Central Oregon and offer experiences with vegetable production\, animal husbandry\, dairy\, mixed operations\, and more. For complete program descriptions\, host farm profiles\, and applications visit http://roguefarmcorps.org \nRogue Farm Corps is committed to an ongoing learning process around privilege\, power\, inequality and systems of oppression. RFC has a goal of making our programs welcoming to\, inclusive of\, and accessible to communities who are under-represented as farm operators in Oregon\, including women\, people of color\, LGBTQ individuals\, low-income individuals and immigrants. Our desire to create a more equitable food system will be reflected in RFC’s programs and collaborations. \nApplications for RFC program scholarships will be available on our website in early – mid January. \nMatt Gordon\nPortland Chapter Coordinator / Rogue Farm Corps\n(503) 310-5766\nroguefarmcorps.org\nfacebook.com/roguefarmcorps
