SUMMARY:Making Climate History Anya Zilberstein Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Naturalists at the time observed rising ocean temperatures\, sinking glaciers\, and a disintegrating coastal ice shelf. Politicians\, in turn\, acted quickly on this information to reinvigorate Arctic exploration and the hunt for a Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans. Since then\, modern scientists determined these were just fleeting phenomena\, very different from the human-caused climate change we are witnessing today. \nIn this lecture\, Anya Zilberstein will discuss the relationships between past and present climate science. Newer\, more precise science is vital. But\, she will argue\, it cannot help us interpret the politics of climate science in the past or understand the significance of climate history for the highly charged debates of the present. By recognizing that the uses and misuses of climate science are hardly new\, historians can help work against the presumption that the political problems of climate change are completely unique to our own time. \n  \nAnya Zilberstein is Associate Professor of History at Concordia University in Montreal. Her book\, A Temperate Empire: Making Climate Change in Early America (Oxford University Press\, 2016)\, won the Berkshire Conference Book Prize and she is co-editor of the new Routledge book series New/Old Natures: Histories of the Environment. Her research and publications encompass the history of environmental sciences and empire\, the early British Atlantic world\, environmental history\, climate history\, food history\, and the history of race\, migration\, and slavery. She is currently working on the history of animal migration (focused on theories of long distance bird migration) and on a second book\, Fodder for Empire: Feeding People Like Other Animals Since the Eighteenth Century\, which explores early forms of nutritional expertise and prescription diets for feeding people and domesticated animals alike.

DESCRIPTION:Over the past few years\, the Student Environmental Resource Center (SERC) at the University of California\, Berkeley (UCB) has been working to institutionalize environmental justice operations\, programs\, and projects for the campus community. In this session\, student and staff host will present on the following programs and projects SERC has adopted and developed to address the demands for more integration of social and environmental justice programs and resources on campus. Presenters will discuss how each program began\, how it developed\, and challenges faced. \nPresenters: \nColette Cosyn\, Internal Operations Manager for the  Student Environmental Resource Center (SERC)\, University of California\, Berkeley \nColette (she/her/hers) is a fourth year undergraduate student studying Society & Environment at UC Berkeley. She supports the Student Environmental Resource Center’s (SERC) community and wellness initiatives through her role as Internal Operations Manager. Colette has previously served as SERC’s Events Associate\, through which she organized UC Berkeley’s Earth Week for two consecutive years. Through her involvement at SERC\, she has been able to fulfill her passions for environmental justice education and community building. \nSharon Daraphonhdeth\, Director of Student Environmental Resource Center\, University of California\, Berkeley \nSharon is the Director of the Student Environmental Resource Center (SERC) at the University of California\, Berkeley. She oversees environmental programs and services for students working to effect meaningful change on campus. In 2015\, she served as the Co-Chair of the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability and was the Coordinator of The Green Initiative Fund from 2014-2017. Sharon holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies from San Francisco State University\, a certificate in Fundraising and Volunteer Management from UC Berkeley Extension\, and is a certified Zero Waste Community Associate. \nTeresa Yu\, Coordinator of The Green Initiative Fund & Sustainability Initiatives\, University of California\, Berkeley \nTeresa (she/her/hers) is The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) Coordinator. Teresa was born and raised in San Francisco\, California. She recently graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Environmental Economics and Policy and a minor in Public Policy. As a student\, she worked as a TGIF Program Associate for two years and is eager to continue her work supporting TGIF projects. Teresa is passionate about supporting students in actualizing their environmental projects and initiatives\, and cultivating student leaders in the environmental movement.

DESCRIPTION:Friends of Tyron Creek is offering a FREE comprehensive nature educator training to be held on Tuesdays from February 11th (half day) though March 3rd at the Tryon Creek Nature Center (11321 SW Terwilliger Blvd\, Portland\, OR) from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. This training is designed to give you the tools you need to be a flexible and culturally responsive leader and educator in a variety of outdoor settings\, with the intention of recruiting enthusiastic and passionate people to become a part of our family of naturalists\, educators\, leaders\, and learners!  \nSince 1970\, Friends of Tryon Creek (FOTC)\, in partnership with Oregon State Parks\, has worked to nurture relationships with nature and connect people to Tryon Creek State Natural Area\, Oregon’s only urban state natural area.  Friends of Tryon Creek is committed to acknowledging social justice\, identity\, and power structures in past and present settings through diverse perspectives. For us\, this means all programs employ an equity framework\, incorporating diversity trainings and workshops throughout our extended community\, including board\, staff and volunteer base. We seek to support our whole community in their effort to reclaim\, reconnect and build relationships with the natural world. We collaborate and partner with a diverse group of neighbors\, property owners\, businesses\, environmental groups\, recreation advocates and government agencies to provide numerous low to no-cost opportunities to play and learn in the watershed. We conduct habitat restoration of public and private lands near the Slough; put on educational events and workshops large and small\, canoeing and kayaking events and nature festivals; and lead a robust youth education program.  \n  \nOur office of 7-10 staff members is located in Northeast Portland adjacent to Whitaker Ponds Nature Park. We are committed to being an inclusive\, anti-racist organization that reflects and meets the needs of our community in makeup\, priorities\, operations\, and programs. \n  \n  \nPosition Description \nOur Stewardship Program is dedicated to the restoration\, enhancement\, and protection of habitat and biodiversity in the Columbia Slough watershed. The Stewardship Director’s primary duties are to provide leadership\, planning\, coordination\, and management of our Stewardship Program. This includes long-term visioning\, planning and prioritization\, grant writing\, contracting and project management and implementation. A key strategy for realizing our program goals is to involve volunteers and community members in stewardship projects. Project examples include riparian and wetlands revegetation\, native forest enhancement\, turtle habitat creation\, installing neighborhood “nature patches\,” and more on public and private lands. The Stewardship Director will be responsible for running volunteer work parties including our winter series of Stewardship Saturdays. The Stewardship Director actively maintains relationships with partner organizations and leads the CSWC Tech Team\, which is currently implementing a five-year restoration and enhancement action plan. They will be responsible for understanding the ecology of the slough\, staying up to date on relevant topics within the watershed\, and ensuring that the rest of the CSWC team has critical information in this area. Our Stewardship Program is in an exciting growth phase. Forth is a growing\, dynamic organization; the successful candidate will be expected to wear many hats\, work independently\, and play an active role in the organization’s development. \nDESCRIPTION OF DUTIES \nOrganizational Communications and Marketing (~50%). Working closely with the Communications Manager\, the Communications Associate supports the development and implementation of Forth’s marketing and communications strategies. \n\nManage Forth’s presence on social media networks\nWork with external consultants to maintain and update website\nSupport earned media efforts; draft press releases\, manage media relations\nResearch and assist in the creation of content for multiple monthly email newsletters to industry and consumer audiences\, develop blog posts\, and other relevant modes of communication including engaging social media posts.\n\n\nDevelop forms\, templates\, multimedia content\, and collateral material\nOther marketing and communications projects as required\nAssist in writing and editing multiple types of print and digital content for both internal and external use\n\nProgram Communications and Marketing (~50%). Forth manages a complex array of projects and programs\, active policy initiatives in multiple venues\, and an ambitious effort to educate consumers about the benefits of electric and advanced mobility. The primary role of the Senior Manager will be to provide management and strategic direction to the team’s programs and contribute to membership and sponsorship goals. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intergenerational conversation on climate choices: how we should meet the challenges of a warming planet? \nTogether\, guests will share how climate change affects them\, their families and friends. We will then consider various options to address this challenge\, using actions and drawbacks as examples to illustrate what each option entails. Next\, we’ll aim to identify areas of common ground and issues that still must be worked through. This presentation will take a candid look at what we have learned that will enable us to make course corrections and attain our commitment to carbon-neutrality. \n\n\n\n\nWendell Brase\, Associate Chancellor – Sustainability\, University of California\, Irvine \nWendell Brase is the University of California\, Irvine’s first Associate Chancellor for Sustainability. In this role\, he leads efforts by UC Irvine and assists other campuses throughout the UC system to implement UC’s Carbon Neutrality Initiative. Brase co-chairs the University of California’s Global Climate Leadership Council. \nFor 25 years\, he provided leadership for an award-winning sustainability program in his role as Vice Chancellor for Administrative and Business Services. UC Irvine received California’s highest environmental award\, the Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award\, in 2008 and again in 2013; has earned numerous accolades for sustainability\, including a 2009 Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Leadership Achievement Award and their 2014 Climate Leadership Award; has been on Sierra magazine’s Top 10 list of greenest campuses for the past ten years\, coming in at No. 1 in 2014\, 2015\, 2018\, and first in the U.S. in 2019; and in 2018\, UCI was recognized by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education with a STARS Platinum rating for its sustainability operations\, academics\, and research. The campus currently has 18 LEED Platinum and 10 LEED Gold buildings\, among the most of any campus in the U.S.

This training is designed to give you the tools you need to be a flexible and culturally responsive leader and educator in a variety of outdoor settings\, with the intention of recruiting enthusiastic and passionate people to become a part of our family of naturalists\, educators\, leaders\, and learners!  \nSince 1970\, Friends of Tryon Creek (FOTC)\, in partnership with Oregon State Parks\, has worked to nurture relationships with nature and connect people to Tryon Creek State Natural Area\, Oregon’s only urban state natural area.  Friends of Tryon Creek is committed to acknowledging social justice\, identity\, and power structures in past and present settings through diverse perspectives. For us\, this means all programs employ an equity framework\, incorporating diversity trainings and workshops throughout our extended community\, including board\, staff and volunteer base. We seek to support our whole community in their effort to reclaim\, reconnect and build relationships with the natural world. DESCRIPTION:Registration closes Monday January 27th!  \nJoin us to connect with other farm to school and school garden stakeholders! \nThis will be a two day conference with workshops\, speakers\, resources and networking opportunities.\nWednesday February 12th will focus on farm and garden based education.\nThursday February 13th will focus on incorporating local food into school meals.\nYou may register for one day or both days. \nOur goals are to support members of Oregon’s farm to school and school garden community (that’s you!) in their work to provide farm and garden-based education and incorporate healthy\, local food into school meals. \nThe purpose of the Conference is to support members of Oregon’s farm to school and school garden community in their work to provide farm and garden-based education and incorporate healthy\, local food into school meals for students grades PreK-12. \n\nOur audience is food service directors and staff\, farmers/producers\, distributors\, enrichment instructors\, OSU Extension staff and volunteers\, classroom teachers\, school administrators\, government agency staff\, non-profit staff\, and parents and community volunteers and others working to support Oregon’s farm to school and school garden programs.

SUMMARY:Spring Nature Educator Training at Tryon Creek
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Tyron Creek is offering a FREE comprehensive nature educator training to be held on Tuesdays from February 11th (half day) though March 3rd at the Tryon Creek Nature Center (11321 SW Terwilliger Blvd\, Portland\, OR) from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. This training is designed to give you the tools you need to be a flexible and culturally responsive leader and educator in a variety of outdoor settings\, with the intention of recruiting enthusiastic and passionate people to become a part of our family of naturalists\, educators\, leaders\, and learners!  \nSince 1970\, Friends of Tryon Creek (FOTC)\, in partnership with Oregon State Parks\, has worked to nurture relationships with nature and connect people to Tryon Creek State Natural Area\, Oregon’s only urban state natural area.  Friends of Tryon Creek is committed to acknowledging social justice\, identity\, and power structures in past and present settings through diverse perspectives. For us\, this means all programs employ an equity framework\, incorporating diversity trainings and workshops throughout our extended community\, including board\, staff and volunteer base. We seek to support our whole community in their effort to reclaim\, reconnect and build relationships with the natural world. Our commitment is built and sustained through authentic partnerships with communities of color\, culturally-specific organizations\, and other historically under-represented groups.  \nOur field trip program serves approximately 4\,200 Kindergarten through 5th grade students each year\, plus roughly 200 teachers and 700 volunteer chaperones from all across the Portland-Metro area.  Friends of Tryon Creek recognizes that the diversity of races\, cultures\, backgrounds\, and experiences of our whole community must be represented in our volunteer base in order to welcome and inspire all visitors\, and strive to create safe spaces for people of color as well as folks who are LBGTQ\, multilingual\, first-generation\, or from other traditionally marginalized communities to join us in our efforts to reclaim\, reconnect\, and build authentic relationships with nature. \nWe welcome all ages\, backgrounds\, and experience levels\, asking only that you are ready to support us in our journey towards equitable opportunities for all\, that you can pass a background check\, and (ideally) are available to volunteer at least once a month (weekday mornings) during the field trip season\, which runs October through May. \nRegister for our training today to join a robust community of like-minded volunteers who enjoy a variety of skill-building and social events throughout the year\, building relationships that last a lifetime. SUMMARY:NOAA Announces Fiscal Year 2020 Environmental Literacy Program Funding Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:The NOAA Office of Education has issued a competitive funding opportunity for projects designed to build environmental literacy of K-12 students and the public so they are knowledgeable of the ways in which their community can become more resilient to extreme weather and/or other environmental hazards\, and become involved in achieving that resilience.\nThis funding opportunity is soliciting two types of projects through separate competitive priorities. \n\nPriority 1 will support new projects ($250\,000 – $500\,000 per project) located in the Southern and Western Regions of the United States.\nThe Southern Region includes the following states and territories: Alabama\, Arkansas\, Florida\, Georgia\, Louisiana\, Mississippi\, New Mexico\, Oklahoma\, Puerto Rico\, Tennessee\, Texas\, and the United States Virgin Islands.\nThe Western Region includes the following states and territories: Alaska\, American Samoa\, Arizona\, California\, Guam\, Hawaii\, Idaho\, Montana\, Nevada\, Northern Mariana Islands\, Oregon\, Utah\, and Washington. \nPriority 2 will support the evolution of projects funded under the 2015-2016 funding opportunities from this program. The list of awards that are eligible can be found here: https://go.usa.gov/xVGzr. Funding levels for this priority are $100\,000 – $500\,000 per project.\nFor both priorities\, eligible applicants are: \n\ninstitutions of higher education;\nK-12 public and independent schools and school systems;\nother nonprofits\, including community-based organizations and informal education institutions\, such as museums\, zoos\, and aquariums;\nstate and local government agencies; and\nIndian tribal governments in the United States.\n\nPlease note: we do not anticipate issuing a solicitation for applications next year. Rather\, applications to this funding opportunity may be funded with fiscal year 2020 and 2021 funds. We plan to issue a funding opportunity\, including a priority to support new projects from the Eastern and Central regions\, which comprise the remainder of the country\, in fall 2021. \nDeadlines\nFor Priority 1\, pre-applications are required and will be used to determine which institutions are invited to submit full applications to this priority. The deadline for pre-applications is 11:59 pm EST on November 25\, 2019 and the deadline for Priority 1 full applications is 11:59 pm EDT on March 26\, 2020.\nFor Priority 2\, only full applications are requested and the deadline for Priority 2 applications is 11:59 pm EST on February 11\, 2020. \nInformational Teleconferences\nFor Priority 1\, two informational teleconferences with the program officers will occur – one on Thursday\, October 17\, 2019 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm EDT and the other on Monday\, October 21\, 2019 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm EDT.
