Youth Have Power is a flexible\, 3 month menu of events for high school students to learn about climate change\, decide how to take climate action\, and connect with other youth climate leaders. Evening and weekend sessions will feature dynamic speakers\, off-screen activities\, and ways to meet other students who are passionate about climate action. Students who attend 5 sessions over the 3 months and complete 1 action challenge will have officially completed the program and will earn a prize!\nAll events are designed for an audience of high school youth\, with the exception of the Speaker Series which is open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a relaxing float down the Sandy River while collecting litter along its banks. This event is a one part relaxing float\, one part exciting scavenger hunt! \nAt 10am\, we’ll gather at Dabney State Recreation Area (using physical distancing) for a short introduction & safety talk. Then we’ll launch our rafts\, kayaks\, and other watercraft into the Sandy! Floaters will stop at various beaches along the river to collect litter\, sometimes working as a team\, for example\, to dig something exciting out of the sand. Who knows what you’ll find! Floaters can expect to arrive at Lewis & Clark State Recreation Area (L&C) around 3pm. \nThis year we’re introducing a Land Litter Team\, where you can participate from the comfort of your own two feet! This group will collect litter at a local recreation area. Youth between 10-17 are also very welcome and must be accompanied by an adult. See ticket options below. \nThis Floating Cleanup is the culmination of our 2nd summer of the “Stash the Trash” program\, a DIY cleanup program at 5 lower Sandy parks. These mesh garbage bags make it easy to ‘pack it out’ while you have fun in the water. \n\n\n\nThere are 4 ticket options. You can register as an ‘individual’\, or if you have multiple people in your group\, you can register as a ‘team’. \n\nReserve a paddle in a 4-6 person raft\nReserve a paddle in a 1-person inflatable kayak (limited availability)\nBYOWC (Bring Your Own Water Craft)\, i.e. you’re bringing your own water craft (kayak\, raft\, tube\, boat\, floatie!) paddle\, and personal flotation device (PPD– or life jacket– is mandatory for everyone).\nLand litter team: collect litter at a local recreation area in a more traditional land-based crew.\n\nTo minimize the potential spread of COVID-19\, participants in each raft (borrowed AND BYO) need to be in the same COVID exposure circle (or “household”). Household groups using a raft provided by Stout Creek Outfitters will float with a masked river guide (guide sits at rear as approved by OR State Marine Board Guidelines). If you have less than 4 people in your household\, please reserve a kayak paddle\, or BYOWC! Thank you for cooperating with this new logistical safety detail. \nIf you’re registering for more than one person\, Click the “Tickets” button\, then choose\, “I want to get tickets as a team member” & make up a team name (or join an existing team). In the order form\, you will be prompted to add your guests’ names & ages. \n\n\n\nSuggested donation: $3-50 per person. Your donation gets you a free parking pass at Dabney! DESCRIPTION:CLIMATE ACTION & COVID-19 RECOVERY — PRACTICAL RESILIENCE STEPS FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES\nShepherding\, organizing and sustaining climate action in rural communities can be a challenge at any time. This is essential work with lots of rewards\, but the challenges are undeniable. Now\, with many rural communities facing COVID-19 health and economic disruptions\, uncertainty about how to carry on business and community life safely\, and looming budget cuts\, many rural climate leaders want to be part of a forward-thinking response that also addresses climate change. \nRural areas face their own challenges and bring their own strengths to the efforts to recover\, rebuild\, reimagine and become more resilient. Rural economies were the hardest hit by the 2008 recession and the slowest to recover. In many places\, the compounding forces of race\, poverty\, and geographic isolation hit hard and could also be seen in the immediate and looming threats of climate change\, even before the coronavirus pandemic put health\, economic\, and racial disparities in the spotlight. \nThis course will help you make climate and resiliency action integral to community recovery even if your town seems too small to make much of an impact or take the reins; even if there is a lot of competition for time\, attention and funds; and even if no one seems to know (or agree on) what to do next. SUMMARY:What has COVID-19 taught us? “Build Back Better” in the Era of Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:UNESCO recently released its Education for Sustainable Development for 2030 framework – ‘Education for Sustainable Development: Towards achieving the SDGs’ urges us to reflect on our past actions and re-focus on achieving the SDGs. The panel will take the main principles from the UNESCO report and will invite various stakeholders to reflect on their practices over the past COVID-19 period and discuss how their practices have changed over this course. \nKey questions that will shape the discussion are- What have we learned from COVID-19 and how does our learning transform into informed practices towards sustainable development? Given the ever-changing education policy due to COVID-19\, the panel will focus on sustainability practices at schools and at homes that continue to neglected. For example\, food wastage\, energy wastage\, plastic pollution\, air travel\, and carbon emissions. This panel will help to reflect on building back better keeping sustainability as a lens. Teachers could reflect on the curriculum in school\, parents reflect on sustainability practices at home and with their children. Academics and scholars provide a critical perspective on UNESCO’s 2030 framework and suggest the next steps. Practitioners narrate how this past experience has shaped-up their implementation on the ground. Policymakers reflect on the policy gaps. \n\nThe panel will highlight discussion points that will help to “Build Back Better” keeping sustainability in mind. It will provide a critical perspective as well as concrete steps forward to make this planet a more equitable place to inhabit. It will reflect on gaps and turn them into opportunities to reflect and take action on. DESCRIPTION:STARTING A COMMUNITY PROJECT IN UNCERTAIN TIMES\n\nSeptember 15 @ 10:00 am – 11:30 am\n$20 – $40\n\n\n\nDo you have an idea for a project to make a positive change in your community? \nMany of us have great ideas for the change we want to see in the world\, but we also have questions about how to get started and maintain progress. In this two-part webinar\, we’ll address the steps to initiate your own community-based project and help you get started. Perhaps you could lead a monthly beach cleanup\, volunteer to run a school library\, raise funds for playground equipment\, train teens to prepare for summer jobs — or pursue other projects that benefit coming generations. \nAt our first session on September 15\, we’ll discuss your skills and interests\, and we’ll cover the basic elements of project development and implementation\, and tips on how to gather needed resources\, overcome obstacles\, and more. You will also connect with a buddy for mutual support between sessions. \nAt our second session on September 29\, you’ll share progress on your projects\, and discuss areas where you might be stuck and how to push through. We will also cover strategies and resources to hold your vision and engage others. \nBetween Sessions 1 and 2\, you will be invited to undertake personal research and to further develop your project. At the end of the webinar you will have clarified your project idea\, developed a plan and taken your first steps towards your vision. \nThis two-part webinar is offered by SAGE and Elders Action Network (EAN) to help the people in our communities to create their legacies. SUMMARY:Making Cities Resilient: Developing Local DRR and Resilience Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Over the past 20 years\, disasters have affected 4.4 billion people\,\ncaused USD 2 trillion of damage\, and killed 1.3 million people. Disasters have affected people living in developing countries and\, in particular\, the most vulnerable communities within these countries. \nParticularly in the context of increased urbanization\, the urban risk continues to rise. The vulnerability of cities to disasters is growing especially as poor people settle in high-risk urban areas. Unfortunately\, the planning and development of cities have given little consideration to the consequences of hazards such as earthquakes\, hydro-meteorological risks\, and others. The implication of this reality is the need for countries to focus on creating a safer world for urban dwellers and developing a series of innovative approaches to build resilience. \nThis e-learning course aims to strengthen the capacities of government professionals to design and implement plans and programs that reduce disaster risk and enhance resilience. \nCourse begins 14 September 2020 for the duration of 12 weeks. The price is $100.00 and the course will be discussing the Decentralize Cooperation Programme\, the environment\, climate change\, governance and local development.
