DESCRIPTION:Gary Lawrence has been in the trenches of local government\, academia\, NGOs and the private sector working on a range of sustainability issues and he has the battle scars to prove it.  Many of his scars healed with a little more wisdom about what doesn’t work and what might work better.  He would like to share some of his experiences with you.  Despite the great investment of thought and money\, sustainability has failed to shape necessary political\, economic and social change since Our Common Future was published.  Some reasons for lack of progress relate to doing short term economic thinking by businesses and investors.  Other factors have to do with competition within advocacy groups for the ownership of the idea and the priorities of their members.  The academic community\, too\, bears great responsibility by not finding ways to synthesize its research and teaching so that society can better understand where the value of leveraged changes can be found.  In this webinar\, Gary Lawrence will explore the fundamental reasons why communicators have not found a way to penetrate the public’s consciousness so they will focus on the importance to “me\,” not to some anonymous “other.” \nGary Lawrence\, formerly\, Chief Sustainability Officer\, AECOM\, formerly\, Planning Director\, City of Seattle \nGary Lawrence has worked on sustainability problems and delivered sustainable outcomes within and between non-governmental\, governmental\, private/corporate and multilateral institutions locally and globally.  As Seattle’s Planning Director he led the development of the world’s first sustainably focused municipal comprehensive plan.  At the University of Washington he created and lead the first academic center for sustainable communities.  During this period he was also a consultant to the US Conference of Mayors\, National Association of Counties\, PCSD\, the OECD an was a negotiator for the US at Habitat II.  Habitat II’s chairman in Istanbul meeting called Gary’s position paper for the OECD the single most important intellectual contribution to the entire Habitat process.  After leaving the University of Washington he became a Principal and Urban Strategy Leader at The Arup Group where part of his responsibility was helping better integrate sustainability into Arup’s internationally renown design culture.  He worked with leaders and staff in all geographies.  From Arup he went to AECOM as their first Chief Sustainability Officer.  Working with corporate leadership and business leaders in all geographies\, he led sustainability and CSR reporting as well as helping businesses win work through helping clients deliver more sustainable outcomes.  Since leaving AECOM he has worked on better integration of sustainability\, resilience and adaptation strategies to reduce societal risk with some emphasis on disaster risk reduction activities within the UN system.  He has also been active writing and speaking on the Sustainable Development Goals as well as how to embrace scientific doubt in societies for which certainty has become the political center.

SUMMARY:Biomimicry as a Framework for GreenSTEM Education Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Biomimicry is an innovation method that looks to examples in nature to solve design and engineering problems. It is a rapidly growing field of study that is charting a course toward a more sustainable world and creating exciting new STEM career pathways. This hands-on workshop will focus on how educators can use biomimicry as a framework to teach standards-aligned content while empowering our next generation of problem-solvers to think differently about nature\, engineering\, and a sustainable future. \nThe workshop will begin with an interactive introduction to the topic of biomimicry\, including both indoor and outdoor activities. Participants will then experience the biomimicry design process first hand as they work in small groups on a design challenge. Activities and resources from Biomimicry Institute’s Youth Design Challenge (YDC) will be featured. The YDC is a free project-based education program and annual competition that empowers students to design nature-inspired solutions to environmental problems. Independent program evaluations indicate that YDC participants experience positive impacts in their ability to define design problems\, use scientific information to solve problems\, think critically\, collaborate with peers\, and believe that they can make a positive difference in the world. \nLearning Objectives \n\nLearn the fundamentals of biomimicry and begin to see the natural world in a whole new light.\nLearn effective strategies for sharing biomimicry with students and connecting nature with technology\, engineering\, and design\nExplore ways to connect the YDC to local concerns to create authentic challenge experiences.\nDiscover how biomimicry and the YDC support Next Generation Science Standards and use a curriculum mapping tool to outline a biomimicry challenge unit

SUMMARY:Spring Nature Educator Training at Tryon Creek
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Tyron Creek is offering a FREE comprehensive nature educator training to be held on Tuesdays from February 11th (half day) though March 3rd at the Tryon Creek Nature Center (11321 SW Terwilliger Blvd\, Portland\, OR) from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. This training is designed to give you the tools you need to be a flexible and culturally responsive leader and educator in a variety of outdoor settings\, with the intention of recruiting enthusiastic and passionate people to become a part of our family of naturalists\, educators\, leaders\, and learners!  \nSince 1970\, Friends of Tryon Creek (FOTC)\, in partnership with Oregon State Parks\, has worked to nurture relationships with nature and connect people to Tryon Creek State Natural Area\, Oregon’s only urban state natural area.  Friends of Tryon Creek is committed to acknowledging social justice\, identity\, and power structures in past and present settings through diverse perspectives. For us\, this means all programs employ an equity framework\, incorporating diversity trainings and workshops throughout our extended community\, including board\, staff and volunteer base. We seek to support our whole community in their effort to reclaim\, reconnect and build relationships with the natural world. Our commitment is built and sustained through authentic partnerships with communities of color\, culturally-specific organizations\, and other historically under-represented groups.  \nOur field trip program serves approximately 4\,200 Kindergarten through 5th grade students each year\, plus roughly 200 teachers and 700 volunteer chaperones from all across the Portland-Metro area.  Friends of Tryon Creek recognizes that the diversity of races\, cultures\, backgrounds\, and experiences of our whole community must be represented in our volunteer base in order to welcome and inspire all visitors\, and strive to create safe spaces for people of color as well as folks who are LBGTQ\, multilingual\, first-generation\, or from other traditionally marginalized communities to join us in our efforts to reclaim\, reconnect\, and build authentic relationships with nature. \nWe welcome all ages\, backgrounds\, and experience levels\, asking only that you are ready to support us in our journey towards equitable opportunities for all\, that you can pass a background check\, and (ideally) are available to volunteer at least once a month (weekday mornings) during the field trip season\, which runs October through May. \nRegister for our training today to join a robust community of like-minded volunteers who enjoy a variety of skill-building and social events throughout the year\, building relationships that last a lifetime. We look forward to being a part of your journey as a vital connection between kids and the natural world\, and thank you for your interest in this important mission! \nRegistration required – contact Erin Cathcart\, Field Trip Program Coordinator at 503 636 4398 or erin@tryonfriends.org with your name and a brief description of why you would like to participate in this year’s Nature Educator Training.

SUMMARY:Making Climate History Anya Zilberstein Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Naturalists at the time observed rising ocean temperatures\, sinking glaciers\, and a disintegrating coastal ice shelf. Politicians\, in turn\, acted quickly on this information to reinvigorate Arctic exploration and the hunt for a Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans. Since then\, modern scientists determined these were just fleeting phenomena\, very different from the human-caused climate change we are witnessing today. \nIn this lecture\, Anya Zilberstein will discuss the relationships between past and present climate science. Newer\, more precise science is vital. But\, she will argue\, it cannot help us interpret the politics of climate science in the past or understand the significance of climate history for the highly charged debates of the present. By recognizing that the uses and misuses of climate science are hardly new\, historians can help work against the presumption that the political problems of climate change are completely unique to our own time. \n  \nAnya Zilberstein is Associate Professor of History at Concordia University in Montreal. Her book\, A Temperate Empire: Making Climate Change in Early America (Oxford University Press\, 2016)\, won the Berkshire Conference Book Prize and she is co-editor of the new Routledge book series New/Old Natures: Histories of the Environment. Her research and publications encompass the history of environmental sciences and empire\, the early British Atlantic world\, environmental history\, climate history\, food history\, and the history of race\, migration\, and slavery. She is currently working on the history of animal migration (focused on theories of long distance bird migration) and on a second book\, Fodder for Empire: Feeding People Like Other Animals Since the Eighteenth Century\, which explores early forms of nutritional expertise and prescription diets for feeding people and domesticated animals alike.
