Outdoor based education is a sure way to nurture global citizens for the stewardship of our planet. You can’t go green without going teen! \nCathy Law teaches Biology\, Earth Science\, and Field Biology at New Paltz High School in New Paltz\, New York. She and her students started the Courtyard Gardens twelve years ago; it features over 200different kinds of plants in 15 themed garden zones. The mission of the garden is to create an outdoor learning center dedicated to understanding and improving the environment and to enable learning that is problem-based and interdisciplinary.

DESCRIPTION:Today\, the National Science Foundation (NSF)\, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS)\, announced the launch of the Civic Innovation Challenge\, a national research and action competition in the smart and connected communities domain. Teams will compete for awards of up to $1 million to support ready-to-implement\, research-based pilot projects that have the potential for scalable\, sustainable\, and transferable impact on community-identified priorities. Teams will include civic partners — such as local\, state\, and tribal government officials\, and non-profit and community leaders — working together with technical and social science researchers. The Civic Innovation Challenge is funded with an anticipated $9 million in funding from NSF\, DOE\, and DHS.

A recent NPR/Ipsos poll showed that less than half of K–12 educators surveyed tackle climate change in their classrooms. In this webinar\, educators will learn strategies to communicate climate change principles that can be applied to any classroom. Through  practical\, inquiry-focused activities\, teachers will gain tools to navigate one of the most important environmental issues of our generation. \nShannon Subers is a science communicator\, artist\, and conservation educator based in San Diego\, California. As an education specialist with San Diego Coastkeeper\, her daily work takes her into K–6 classrooms to teach students about ocean pollution. Shannon holds an M.A. in Biology from the Advanced Inquiry Program\, a joint effort between Miami University and San Diego Zoo Global. She uses bioindicator data in collaboration with air quality managers\, regulators\, land managers\, and local universities to inform policy\, track emissions sources\, and establish management guidelines.\nHannah Prather is a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the Ramirez Lab at Reed College. She received her PhD from Portland State University\, researching the human impacts on biodiversity and ecology in the urban communities of lichen and moss.\nEd Jahn is the Executive Editor for Science and Environment as well as the Executive Producer of OPB’s outdoor program\, “Oregon Field Guide.” He is a fellow with the Institutes for Journalism and Natural Resources and an advocate and teacher of better science communication.\n\n\nEvent attendees will have the opportunity to sign up for a post-event nature walk through the Hoyt Arboretum with one of their knowledgeable volunteers.
