SUMMARY:Earth Charter Cities Online Course: Ethics and Urban Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:Ethics and Urban Sustainable Development; The Challenges of Our Time\nCities are full of opportunities\, but they also face many challenges. Rapid urbanization often threatens the environment\, human health\, and fair distribution of resources and funds. This course helps participants develop a broad approach to sustainability and make the EC Principles actionable at an urban level. By creating some space to dive into the theory and good practices\, the course intends to help participants be prepared to develop sustainable and inclusive communities in an era of uncertainty and disruption. It offers a space to learn about the nexus between the Sustainable Development Goals\, the Earth Charter and urban sustainability. \nThis experience seeks to build a pool of experts and consultants with a systemic and ethical approach to sustainability\, who are able to provide quality support and guidance to cities facing challenges during their development and planning process. How do we make cities and human settlements inclusive\, safe\, resilient and sustainable\, interlinking with the other goals \nONLINE & FACILITATED. This Earth Charter Cities Course will equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to take urban sustainability practices to higher levels by using the Earth Charter (EC) and the Earth Charter Cities (ECC) Manifesto. \nLearn more here.

SUMMARY:Teaching for Community\, Without a Classroom—Virtual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Building Community in the Virtual Classroom\nWhat happens to Place Based Learning when we are sequestered? How do we share the stories that provide understanding of ourselves and our communities? Join us in bringing community\, connection and deeper meaning to the virtual classroom (and beyond). We are harnessing this unprecedented opportunity of crisis and isolation and transforming it into an opportunity to strengthen and restore ourselves\, our students\, and our communities. \nAt the conference\, veteran teachers and other practitioners will share innovative and highly doable ideas that break down physical walls using storytelling techniques that cross disciplines. Conference workshop leaders are longtime CWI associates who come from K-16 classrooms\, administrators concerned with larger issues of equity\, along with community-based educator-innovators from a wide array of fields\, including the arts\, science\, folklore\, social justice\, and more.

DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Cathy Law\nDate and time: Wednesday\, April 8th\, 2020\, 7:30 p.m. EST \n \nKids are just happier when they are outside learning. Using mother nature as a laboratory setting is an incredible way to engage students in first-hand study of the principles of ecology\, geology\, and climate change. You will learn the fascinating science behind the social\, psychological and physiological benefits of using gardens to teach. Besides\, donning a big grin\, students learn scientific concepts more\neffectively when performing hands-on investigations outside so their grades soar. Outdoor based education is a sure way to nurture global citizens for the stewardship of our planet. You can’t go green without going teen! \nCathy Law teaches Biology\, Earth Science\, and Field Biology at New Paltz High School in New Paltz\, New York. She and her students started the Courtyard Gardens twelve years ago; it features over 200different kinds of plants in 15 themed garden zones. The mission of the garden is to create an outdoor learning center dedicated to understanding and improving the environment and to enable learning that is problem-based and interdisciplinary.

DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Shannon Subers\nDate and time: Wednesday\, April 1st\, 2020\, 7:30 p.m. EST \nWant to cover climate change in the classroom\, but not sure where to start? You’re not alone. A recent NPR/Ipsos poll showed that less than half of K–12 educators surveyed tackle climate change in their classrooms. In this webinar\, educators will learn strategies to communicate climate change principles that can be applied to any classroom. Through practical\, inquiry-focused activities\, teachers will gain tools to navigate one of the most important environmental issues of our generation. \nShannon Subers is a science communicator\, artist\, and conservation educator based in San Diego\, California. As an education specialist with San Diego Coastkeeper\, her daily work takes her into K–6 classrooms to teach students about ocean pollution. Shannon holds an M.A. in Biology from the Advanced Inquiry Program\, a joint effort between Miami University and San Diego Zoo Global. Her graduate research involved combining art and science to better communicate conservation. \nAll our webinars are free of charge and open to everyone\, but you need to register well in advance. Feel free to spread the word with anyone you think might be interested. Please use the links below each of the webinar descriptions for more information on how to register.

SUMMARY:Biomimicry Youth Design Challenge- NGSS and UN SDG aligned
DESCRIPTION:The Youth Design Challenge (YDC) is a free\, hands-on\, project-based learning experience that provides classroom and informal educators with a new framework to introduce biomimicry and an interdisciplinary approach to science and environmental literacy. Working in teams with an adult coach\, students explore the wonders of the natural world and apply what they learn to create innovations that support a healthier planet. Learn more about the YDC and how to participate below. \n  \nTimeline\nThe Youth Design Challenge follows an academic calendar\, with entries reviewed once annually in late spring. \n\nRegistration Opens: November 1\, 2019\nSubmissions Open: December 2019\nCoach Support and Prof. Dev.: November 2019 – February 2020\nRegistration Closes: March 1\, 2020\nSubmission Deadline: April 1\, 2020 (6pm Pacific Time)\nJudging Period: April – May 2020\nAward Announcement: May 2020\n\nWho can participate?\nThe Youth Design Challenge is a team competition for students in middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) in the US. A team consists of between 2-8 students and 1 or 2 adult coaches affiliated with a school\, educational organization\, or homeschool. Please refer to the Official Rules for complete eligibility details. \nWhat will your team do?\nYour team will take on the role of innovators and work together to apply biomimicry (nature-inspired innovation) to address a social and/or environmental issue related to climate change adaptation or mitigation. Suggestion: work on an issue that affects your local community! As a coach\, you will guide your students as they study how organisms in nature have adapted to similar problems and challenges and apply what they learn to innovative solutions. Final projects can then be entered into the nationwide competition for prizes awarded by the Biomimicry Institute. \nHow does the Challenge meet instructional goals?\nThe Youth Design Challenge is aligned to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for both middle school and high school. Full alignments can be downloaded below. \n\nNGSS Alignment for High School\nNGSS Alignment for Middle School\nNGSS Alignment for UN Sustainable Development Goals (optional focus)\n\nWhat is required to enter the Challenge?\nEntries are submitted online and include the following elements: \n\nWritten project overview \nProject image\nVideo pitch\nProject portfolio\nTeam photo\n\nFor complete details about requirements\, please visit our Submission Guidelines page.  \nJudging and Awards\nAwards are given each year for 1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place in two categories: middle school and high school.
