SUMMARY:Senior Advocates Generational Equity: A House Divided
DESCRIPTION:Every American is affected by the divisions and outrage that prevent us from making progress on urgent problems. We are finding it harder and harder to even talk with one another\, and it is damaging in many ways. During our June 10 forum\, we will help participants deliberate together about how we should approach this long-term challenge.\n\nWe recognize there are no easy answers to the problem. Should we require more accurate\, respectful discussion in the media and online\, or would that stifle free speech? Should we reform politics and government to encourage compromise\, or will that mean giving up on the changes we really need and want? Should local communities set policies in areas like health care and the environment\, or would that risk the progress we’ve made and make further progress nearly impossible? Should we crack down on money in politics\, or will people just find new ways to evade the rules?\n\nOur part of the solution to these divisions is to bring people together from diverse backgrounds to listen and learn from one another. During this event\, we’ll present three options for deliberation about difficult problems. Each option offers advantages as well as risks. And each reflects different ways of understanding what is at stake\, forcing us to think about what matters most to us.\n\nAt the close of the forum\, you can expect to have learned more about the pros and cons of the options from different viewpoints. We also hope that you will make personal connections with other participants and that some participants will use practices from the forum to host similar conversations.\n\nOur first online forum filled within 15 minutes\, register for our second here!

The Procurement and Contract Specialist will conduct analysis of existing processes\, help improve procedures\, and use public procurement and contracting best practices to assist with projects\, design and construction\, goods\, and services in the four (4) districts and an intergovernmental agency managed by MCDD. If you’re looking to apply your strong  procurement experience to build up the contracting practices of a growing public agency\, then this is the perfect position for you! \n\nOPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT TECHNICIAN (TEMPORARY)\n\nThe O&M Assistant will perform a variety of tasks independently and in collaboration with MCDD Operations Team to support the annual maintenance of our flood control infrastructure. This includes operating vehicles and heavy-duty equipment such as trucks and trailers\, herbicide spray tanks\, and hydro-seeders; servicing and conducting minor repairs to tools and equipment; working on manual labor tasks with small equipment and hand tools\, performing building maintenance and application of herbicides; and completing paperwork associated with different administrative tasks. . Students serve at a community partner site on a weekly basis\, supporting the work of the community partner and bringing its mission back to the PSU campus. In addition to serving in a designated volunteer role with their organization\, a key component of this role is for the SLS member to serve as a liaison between the community partner site and PSU\, developing awareness for the community organization throughout campus and promoting the organization’s volunteer opportunities to PSU students. \nSLS members also support engagement with the Student Community Engagement Center through facilitation of large Days of Service\, shorter Serve Your City projects\, tabling\, and other outreach events on the PSU campus. DESCRIPTION:Due to the continued uncertainty around the global COVID-19 pandemic\, the ICSD Organizing Committee has decided to convene the 2020 event virtually. This will allow ICSD to remain accessible to all\, while providing our community with a forum to continue advancing the SDGs. We realize that this disease is affecting different countries on different timelines\, and want to ensure that all participants\, from all countries\, have an equal opportunity to attend this exciting event. We’re hopeful that this may be the best ICSD ever\, as travel costs and US visa processes are no longer barriers to participation! We hope the online format allows us to have the most internationally-representative event to date. \nHere is what you need to know about ICSD moving forward: \n\nOur abstract submission process remains the same. DESCRIPTION:Presenters: Michelle Cloud\, Cheryl Bauer-Armstrong\nWednesday\, April 29th\, 2020\, 7:30–8:30 p.m. EST \nThe spring walleye harvest is the time when the frogs begin to sing\, the snow turns to water\, and the maple sap is ready to tap. Tribal elders speak of the rich knowledge generations of Indigenous people have acquired by close observation and learning from local plants and animals. Understanding and respectfully acknowledging the interrelationships of phenomena and events in the natural world in a reciprocal and respectful way; honoring those relationships is the basis of traditional ecological knowledge. Contemporary First Nations youths\, and all young people\, could benefit from understanding the natural world and their relationship with it. A deeply collaborative approach between tribal\, university\, and K–12 partners has the potential to invigorate Indigenous youths in science endeavors\, make STEM more relevant to them (and their peers)\, as well as foster positive school cultures. \nEarth Partnership at the University of Wisconsin-Madison convened the expertise of elders and community members from Ho-Chunk\, Bad River\, Lac du Flambeau\, Lac Courte Oreilles\, and Red Cliff Nations with university social\, physical\, and life scientists to develop a culturally relevant environmental education program to improve experiences in science learning. \nThe resulting Indigenous Arts and Sciences (IAS) is an approach to environmental science education that engages Indigenous wisdom and scientific processes rooted in respect and reciprocity. While these are distinct from the more linear and chronological traditions of Western science\, there are intersections at which Western sciences and Traditional ecological knowledge can meet and interact with one another to their mutual benefit. \nThis webinar is a story about Earth Partnership’s Indigenous Arts and Sciences—how it began\, how our collaboration works\, and what we have learned (and are still learning) along the way. \nPresenters: \nMichelle Cloud is an enrolled member of the Ho-Chunk Nation and is Division Manager for Ho-Chunk Culture & Community Education\, managing the Nation’s Indigenous Arts & Sciences initiative. Michelle has experience working with Indigenous children and families as the former Title VI Parent Advisory Committee chair\, Johnson O’Malley chair\, and she is a national facilitator for Seeking Educational Equity & Diversity (SEED). She has a BS from Upper Iowa University in Criminal Justice and is currently pursuing an MS from University of Minnesota Duluth in Tribal Administration and Governance. \nCheryl Bauer-Armstrong is the Director of Earth Partnership Director at UW-Madison. Cheryl’s journey involving schools and communities in restoration education began at the UW-Madison Arboretum in 1994. Since becoming director of Earth Partnership in 2006\, she has led the effort in initiatives to address environmental justice\, water stewardship\, nature connectedness\, equitable education\, culturally-relevant pedagogy\, and community-based conservation in 22 states and in Puerto Rico. Initiatives include RESTORE\, Indigenous Arts and Sciences and Latino Earth Partnership. She teaches courses in the Department of Planning and Landscape Architecture. Cheryl has an MS in Landscape Planning and Ecology from Harvard University and a BS focused on ecological restoration from UW-Madison.

SUMMARY:PSU's VIRTUAL Earth Day of Service: Exploring Cultural Sustainability & Food Justice in Portland
DESCRIPTION:Honor Earth Day 2020 by exploring the connection to the land through the shared collective wisdom of local BIPOC farmers. We will partner with the Raceme Farm Collective\, which includes Pathways to farming participants\, Scrapberry Farm\, Flying Dogheart Farm & Chalchi Farm to spend a morning imagine a new\, inclusive food system where BIPOC farmers are the next generation of leaders and mentors in the agriculture industry. \n\nDue to changes in support of COVID-19\, this event will be held from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm virtually via Zoom. It will feature tips on how to grow food with farmers from the Raceme Farm Collective. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our April B Learning Lunch!\nThe Sustainable Development Goals are a collection of 17 global goals designed to be a “blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all”. The SDGs were set in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and intended to be achieved by the year 2030. \nDuring Earth Month\, we’ll gather to hear from Kim Smith for an overview of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Why should businesses and individuals be informed? Bring your questions and find out more. \nB Lab and the UN Global Compact have developed a new online impact-management solution. Launched in January 2020\, the SDG Action Manager incorporates B Lab’s B Impact Assessment and the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact to provide tools and direction so businesses can lead by reshaping their practices and using their collective voice to make progress on the SDGs in the next decade. Mike Mercer will provide a hands-on look at this new SDG Action Manager to learn how your business can take part. \nAbout our Speakers \nDr. Kim Smith teaches sociology and helps lead programs at Portland Community College. She is the co-founder of the Greater Portland Sustainability Education Network (GPSEN)\, acknowledged by United Nations University\, and has represented the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and the US Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) at multiple international conferences\, including Rio+20 and the UNESCO World Summit on ESD. She is committed to offering hope for a sustainable future through education\, professional development\, and civic engagement. \nMike Mercer\, of MMercer Consulting\, has a long history of engaging business leaders\, employees and community stakeholders in maximizing their effectiveness and aligning their aspirations for a verdant planet\, a healthy population\, and a thriving economic sector.
