DESCRIPTION:The nation’s attention is focused on the COVID-19 emergency\, but the other crisis that is disrupting our lives — climate change — is not going away. Though we can’t come together in Washington this year\, CCL is holding a virtual conference starting Saturday\, June 13\, and registration is now open. \nThe conference\, “A Community Stronger Than COVID\,” will be held on Zoom from 1 to 5 p.m. ET. In-depth seminars will also be offered from 1 to 3 p.m. ET on Sunday\, June 14. The conference is free. \nJoin CCL’s virtual conference to learn about the path ahead for climate change policy. \n\nGet updated on the prospect of climate change action from members of Congress\, journalists and other climate organizations.\nGet trained on how to engage your member of Congress and others in your community about climate change.\nConnect virtually with others from around the country who are concerned about climate change and working to get Congress to act on climate.\n\nAlthough the conference does not include lobbying this year\, in a separate activity our CCL chapters will lobby congressional offices on Tuesday\, June 16\, and Wednesday\, June 17. The process for forming lobby teams varies from district to district. SUMMARY:Virtual Workshop: Coping With Climate Anxiety in the Classroom and for Yourself
DESCRIPTION:The Worry & Hope study at the University of Hawaii revealed a pervasive emotional climate of fear\, anger\, sadness\, shame and hope about climate change. College faculty already knew this\, and are\, themselves\, feeling anxiety\, grief\, and additional stress that accompanies a sense of urgency and responsibility to teach and engage with students about climate change across all academic subject areas. \nThis two hour online workshop is for faculty to address their own emotions so that we can create and hold space in our classrooms for students to integrate and process hard realities about climate change impacts. If not here\, where? If not us\, who? A short overview of research on climate change education and pedagogies will be followed by experiential workshop going through 4 activities that you can then use in your classroom.  The activities are based on recent research as well as ecotherapy\, ecopsychology\, and the Active Hope work of Joanna Macy. \nKrista Hiser is the Director of the University of Hawaii System Center for Sustainability Across the Curriculum (an AASHE Regional Center). She is also a longtime Professor of writing and teaches climate change communication\, project-based sustainability capstone\, and climate fiction. \nA Zoom link\, some view-ahead materials\, and technology requirements will be forward to registered participants. Video connectivity is required\, and participants must attend the entire 2 hour workshop to preserve the interactive online engagement.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Connecting Food Security\, Community\, and Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:At a time when college costs continue to climb considerably faster than general inflation and more students are facing food insecurity\, tying food security to sustainability can show students the importance of measures meant to improve our ecological footprint. For students from underrepresented populations (POC\, low income\, first-generation\, e.g.)\, a focus on sustainability can seem irrelevant to their life or overwhelming when they have more immediately pressing concerns. I’ll be highlighting efforts to ‘close the loop’ in small scale food production systems with composting\, seed saving\, recycling\, and permaculture techniques while also providing food and educational and internship opportunities to students who might have more difficulty than their peers in accessing those things. I’ll frame this in what is essentially a cradle to grave approach to agriculture\, with additional discussion of resiliency from a social perspective- caring for the environment as we care for our community. This model of building multiple overlapping networks to address related issues helps students to practice critical thinking and problem-solving skills in an arena that is specifically and explicitly designed to tie human well-being to the well-being of the planet in a way that is non-threatening and empowering\, instead of overwhelming and alienating. \nRegister Here!

DESCRIPTION:It’s 20th anniversary of the Village Building Convergence!  One of the blessings this pandemic is offering is the time to reflect on our work. While we are needing to adapt to COVID-19\, there are still several ways that we are continuing to support the essence of our work – to deepen relationships with each other and the land. \nWe understand that this is especially important as we find creative ways to hold our needs and desires to be together while we are physically distanced and moving through our collective grief in solidarity. \nWith this in our hearts\, we are transitioning our flagship gathering – the Village Building Convergence (VBC) to a digital gathering. We weighed several options for how to move forward and felt that it is an especially critical time for us to feel connected to each other. So while technology has its host of limitations and problems\, we simultaneously hold our deep desire and sense of responsibility to host community gatherings during this time. \nWe are witnessing a surge in interest in our placemaking and re-villaging models and want to inoculate as many communities with the tools that you need to be able to enable your community to thrive. Additionally\, the VBC hosts a series of evening events featuring speakers and local musicians. \nWe are in week three of our Placemaking Program as 35+ communities looks to start installing projects starting May 29th for the 20th annual Village Building Convergence(VBC). \nLast week\, Permaculture practitioners attend a workshop for community leaders to share about their worlds\, including creating food forests\, using biochar\, and ecological restoration. After sharing\, the Permies then consulted on site designs for the placemaking sites. DESCRIPTION:Are you wild about trivia? Cuz we are. The National Wildlife Federation and Association of Northwest Steelheaders challenge you to join their virtual Wild About Trivia night on May 19th via Zoom. Invite your friends and family and test your knowledge on 4 topics: Pollinators\, Garden for Wildlife\, Northwest Steelheaders and Salmon\, and Wildlife Fun Facts. Win points for each correct answer. You can enter on your own (and we will place you with others) or with a team (3-5 people). Kids are welcome! Please email Allena with your team name and the members by May 15th at ORHabitat@nwf.org. Winning teams will be awarded prizes like fishing gear\, a gardening tote\, animal plush and more that will be mailed to them.
