SUMMARY:World Localization Day: Local Future
DESCRIPTION:Be part of this progressive\, inspirational and life-affirming movement for change! \nFor decades\, the localization movement has been emerging at the\ngrassroots on every continent\, under the radar of the mainstream media\nand with virtually no support from government. People have been\nreweaving the fabric of place-based economies that are human-scale and\nhuman-paced: economies that can serve as cornerstones for community\nand personal wellbeing. By shortening the link between production and\nconsumption\, they have reconnected both to each other and to the Earth.\nThis is the economics of happiness. \nLocalization is about \nsupporting local shops\, local farms and local businesses. It’s about keeping money within the community. It’s about investing in the place where you live– financially\, emotionally\,practically. It’s about building on the resources of the area (both human\nand natural) and living with ecological limits. It’s about saying no to giant unaccountable corporations. And it’s about pressing for political change: to move taxes\, subsidies and regulations away from supporting a few global monopolies towards a multitude of place-based businesses and industries. \nAfter COVID-19\, we can return to stressful disconnected lives and climate catastrophe\, or we can slow down\, scale down and rebuild our connections to each other and to the Earth. \n\n\nThis pre-recorded event will include \n\n\n\n\n\nTalks\nDiscussion\nMusic\nCelebrity Endorsements\nAnimations\nPolitical humour\nQ&A forum\nLive chat\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here for this World Localization Day! \nDonations greatly appreciated. \n

SUMMARY:The Virtual Ecosystem Scenario Viewer
DESCRIPTION:Please join a special webinar tomorrow: \nTuesday\, June 16\, at 2 pm EDT \nThe Virtual Ecosystem Scenario Viewer:\nA new tool for visualizing marine ecosystem models\nSpace is Limited! Reserve Your Seat Today! \nTo successfully monitor and recover marine species requires an understanding of the entire ocean ecosystem and the suite of impacts on their survival. Toward this end\, NOAA uses sophisticated modeling tools that incorporate population biology and a range of climate\, environmental\, ecological and human impacts to the ocean. The complexity of these models – making them so robust – limits the ability of most peple to understand them. The Virtual Ecosystem Scenario Viewer (VES-V) is an exciting new interactive visualization tool that show the results of these complex modeling dynamics in an easy-to-view manner. \nVES-V illustrates the responses of virtual marine ecosystems to a range of living marine resource management scenarios. These visualizations help all people see the application of models in managing marine resources\, and explore tradeoffs among scenarios in making decisions effecting our nation’s marine ecosystems. This tool demonstrates how we can better present and visualize marine ecosystems\, their marine resources\, and their collective responses to a range of pressures. VES-V holds enormous potential as an intuitive interactive problem based visualization tool for students and the public. \nFind out more about this exciting new tool!

SUMMARY:Virtual Workshop: Coping With Climate Anxiety in the Classroom and for Yourself
DESCRIPTION:The Worry & Hope study at the University of Hawaii revealed a pervasive emotional climate of fear\, anger\, sadness\, shame and hope about climate change. College faculty already knew this\, and are\, themselves\, feeling anxiety\, grief\, and additional stress that accompanies a sense of urgency and responsibility to teach and engage with students about climate change across all academic subject areas. \nThis two hour online workshop is for faculty to address their own emotions so that we can create and hold space in our classrooms for students to integrate and process hard realities about climate change impacts. If not here\, where? If not us\, who? A short overview of research on climate change education and pedagogies will be followed by experiential workshop going through 4 activities that you can then use in your classroom.  The activities are based on recent research as well as ecotherapy\, ecopsychology\, and the Active Hope work of Joanna Macy. \nKrista Hiser is the Director of the University of Hawaii System Center for Sustainability Across the Curriculum (an AASHE Regional Center). She is also a longtime Professor of writing and teaches climate change communication\, project-based sustainability capstone\, and climate fiction. \nA Zoom link\, some view-ahead materials\, and technology requirements will be forward to registered participants. Video connectivity is required\, and participants must attend the entire 2 hour workshop to preserve the interactive online engagement.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Connecting Food Security\, Community\, and Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:At a time when college costs continue to climb considerably faster than general inflation and more students are facing food insecurity\, tying food security to sustainability can show students the importance of measures meant to improve our ecological footprint. For students from underrepresented populations (POC\, low income\, first-generation\, e.g.)\, a focus on sustainability can seem irrelevant to their life or overwhelming when they have more immediately pressing concerns. I’ll be highlighting efforts to ‘close the loop’ in small scale food production systems with composting\, seed saving\, recycling\, and permaculture techniques while also providing food and educational and internship opportunities to students who might have more difficulty than their peers in accessing those things. I’ll frame this in what is essentially a cradle to grave approach to agriculture\, with additional discussion of resiliency from a social perspective- caring for the environment as we care for our community. This model of building multiple overlapping networks to address related issues helps students to practice critical thinking and problem-solving skills in an arena that is specifically and explicitly designed to tie human well-being to the well-being of the planet in a way that is non-threatening and empowering\, instead of overwhelming and alienating. \nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:Mother Earth News Fair Online
DESCRIPTION:What Is MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR ONLINE: SUMMER 2020?\nFor this program\, we’re using the Teachable platform. Here\, we offer “courses\,” and each course features pre-recorded video workshops hosted by the esteemed experts that make up the MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR family\, along with supporting materials and handouts. Each workshop video is 20 to 30 minutes long. \nThe online program features eight courses\, each covering the MOTHER EARTH NEWS key content areas. These courses function similarly to stages at a physical FAIR. Each topic features 6 to 8 workshop videos – more than 23 hours of workshops altogether. The workshops include information on DIY skills\, food independence\, livestock\, modern homesteading\, natural health\, organic gardening and more. \nAt MOTHER EARTH NEWS\, all of our content\, including these workshops\, are designed to empower you to become less dependent on systemic products or services. What does that mean? This is an opportunity learn how to save a lot of money on things such as groceries\, expensive health products\, energy\, and more. \nUnlike at the physical FAIRS\, where workshops take place simultaneously\, you won’t have to pick and choose which workshops to watch! Most folks can enjoy only 10 to 12 workshops maximum at a physical FAIR. Now you can see them all! \nRegister before June 20 for only $20\, after that the courses will be $20 a course or bundled for $120. \nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:Village Building Design Course: VBDC
DESCRIPTION:It’s 20th anniversary of the Village Building Convergence!  One of the blessings this pandemic is offering is the time to reflect on our work. While we are needing to adapt to COVID-19\, there are still several ways that we are continuing to support the essence of our work – to deepen relationships with each other and the land. \nWe understand that this is especially important as we find creative ways to hold our needs and desires to be together while we are physically distanced and moving through our collective grief in solidarity. \nWith this in our hearts\, we are transitioning our flagship gathering – the Village Building Convergence (VBC) to a digital gathering. We weighed several options for how to move forward and felt that it is an especially critical time for us to feel connected to each other. So while technology has its host of limitations and problems\, we simultaneously hold our deep desire and sense of responsibility to host community gatherings during this time. \nWe are witnessing a surge in interest in our placemaking and re-villaging models and want to inoculate as many communities with the tools that you need to be able to enable your community to thrive. So we are also adapting our Introductory workshop series to placemaking – the Village Building Design Course (VBDC) for a digital platform. \nWe would love it if you would check it out yourself\, share it with friends\, and on your social media platforms. \nFor more information\, visit our Village Building Convergence website.

SUMMARY:Invitation to "Structuring an Economy for People and Planet in the Time of Climate Crisis and COVID-19" WECAN's next webinar!
DESCRIPTION:Please be invited to join the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN) on Thursday\, May 28 for our upcoming webinar\, “Structuring an Economy for People and Planet in the Time of Climate Crisis and COVID-19”. During this dynamic dialogue women and feminists from different regions of the world will unite to discuss alternative economies that counteract extractive economic systems\, colonization\, racism\, and patriarchy— and instead visibilize women’s labor\, center Indigenous knowledge\, and prioritize people and planet. There could not be a more important time to ensure we do not go back to business as usual.\n\nAs unemployment severely rises\, food and housing are under further threat\, oil prices plummet\, and some governments insist on bailing out the fossil fuel sector and other destructive industries instead of people and nature— the COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the already existing severe cracks in our global economic system. What is needed now is investment in economies founded on principles of justice\, reciprocity\, and regeneration. Learn more about this vital interactive discussion and how to participate down below!\n\nStructuring an Economy for People and Planet\nIn the Time of Climate Crisis and COVID-19\nThursday\, May 28\, 2020\n11:00 am PST/ 2:00 pm EST USA time\nPlease check your own time zone to coordinate!\nRegistration is required –\nregister at this link
