SUMMARY:Urban Forestry Carbon Offset Protocol: Developing Projects through the Offset Network
DESCRIPTION:The Offset Network\, now hosted by Second Nature\, presents a new pathway for colleges and universities to develop carbon offset methodologies. New methodologies can undergo a technical expert review process to obtain approval for use through the Offset Network. Learn about this new pathway\, and the first protocol to complete the technical review process- Duke University’s Urban Forestry Protocol. Presenters will introduce in detail the Urban Forestry Protocol\, including examples of how campuses can use the protocol to develop tree-planting projects in their own communities. The webinar will also discuss the technical review process\, and share how colleges and universities may work with the Offset Network to create their own new types of carbon offset methodologies. Join this webinar whether you are just starting to think about carbon offsets for your institution\, or have already developed offset projects and are interested in learning about new updates from the Offset Network. \nRegister for this free event HERE!

This agenda will support the theme of this year’s High-level Political Forum which is “Accelerated action and transformative pathways: realising the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development”. The discussion will seek to provide insight on how Covid-19 will affect the sector and what new ideas are being considered that can enable higher education to enable radical change and regeneration. In addition to this discussion\, there will be a special HESI Members roundtable that will be held on 9 July to reflect on this discussion and encourage actionable next steps.\n\n\nEvent Objectives:\n\nReflect on where we are: Through the discussion\, to understand the impact of COVID-19 on Higher Education so we know “where we are”;\nExplore where we want to get to: Explore new ideas as to how we can regenerate\, renew and revitalise Higher Education and explore different pathway that would offer ideas on how to Redesign Higher & Further Education for the Future;\nBe inspired\, while considering access and equity\, to build collective intent: Be inspired by new\, propositional fresh thinking as to what we can achieve collectively while also ensuring that we consider inclusion and equity at all levels\, everywhere.\n\nREGISTRATION DEADLINE JULY 3.  More information/register here \nLearn more about HESI and consider helping it reach its full potential.  Share with your networks as appropriate.\n\n\nDocumentation:\n\nConcept and programme\n\n\nFlyer: Higher Education Sustainability Initiative 2020

SUMMARY:American Experience: The Vote
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the centennial of women’s suffrage with NEH-supported films and online resources \nWASHINGTON\, D.C. (July 2\, 2020) — The ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in August of 1920 was the culmination of a lengthy and hard-won struggle fought by legions of American women who organized\, campaigned\, marched\, and engaged in civil disobedience to achieve the goal of women’s suffrage. \nPremiering on PBS American Experience on July 6\, The Vote\, a two-part documentary funded by a $350\,000 grant to City Lore from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)\, tells the story of the final decade of the transformative cultural and political movement that resulted in the largest expansion of voting rights in U.S. history. Directed and produced by Michelle Ferrari\, the film examines the major turning points within the women’s suffrage movement between 1909 to 1920\, the debates among its leaders about the best tactics for effecting social and political change\, the unsung leaders of the movement\, and the controversies over gender roles and race that divided the nation. \nThe Vote is one of several NEH-supported projects focused on women’s history and 100 years of women’s suffrage. \nOn July 10\, PBS American Masters will also premiere the documentary Unladylike2020\, on female trailblazers in politics and civil rights. Directed and produced by Charlotte Mangin\, this special one-hour broadcast is part of an NEH-funded multimedia series that illuminates the inspiring stories of little-known American heroines. Unladylike2020 spotlights 26 American changemakers through 26 short online documentaries and includes biographies of women such as Bessie Coleman\, the first African American to earn an international pilot’s license; Susan La Flesche Picotte\, the first Native American physician who also founded a hospital on the Omaha Reservation; Jeanette Rankin\, the first woman elected to the U.S. Congress; and Gertrude Ederle\, the first woman to swim across the English Channel.

SUMMARY:WorldOregon presents Nicholas Kristof
DESCRIPTION:Kristof\, an Oregon native\, reflects on the risks ahead for the U.S. and its standing as global leader. Should we aim to have countries fear us or admire us? Do we maximize our competitiveness through trade policy abroad or through educational investments at home? Is U.S. leadership passing to China\, India and Europe\, and if so how can we recover the mantle? What lessons are there from the rest of the world that America can learn from?

SUMMARY:Are We Still Fighting Slavery in 2020?
DESCRIPTION:The national discourse surrounding police brutality and the criminal justice system is bringing more attention to the United State’s system of mass incarceration. The U.S. makes up about 4.25% of the total world population\, yet 1 out of 5 prisoners in the world are incarcerated in the United States. \nWhy is that? \nOn April 8th\, 1964\, The 13th Constitutional Amendment was passed which stated\, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude\, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted\, shall exist within the United States\, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” This meant that slavery was abolished with an exception; the exception of those who have been deemed criminals. \nIn 2020\, as we try to understand police brutality and how it supports mass incarceration\, it is essential that we dissect if these systems are feeding into an institution of slavery with a precedent set by the 13th amendment. \nOur films Restorative Justice\, Justice in Crisis and Immigrant Prisons were produced to ignite and fuel these necessary conversations. \nClick Here to use one of our films\, bringing our social justice documentaries and curriculum to your classroom.

SUMMARY:Solar-Plus-Storage: A Winning Combination for Your Campus to Achieve Climate Action Goals
DESCRIPTION:Hear how the West Valley-Mission Community College District and SunPower worked together to install an integrated solar and storage project in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley. The renewable electricity is needed to power the campus’s 1MM sq.ft of buildings on 228 acres. \nThe 5.4 MWdc solar carport and 3MW/6MWh energy storage project is forecast to be completed in 2021. An existing 2.2 MW system\, installed in 2011\, has generated an estimated $860\,000 in electricity savings per year for the District. Overall\, the systems will allow the District to offset approximately 75% of its grid electricity use with clean energy and boost its annual savings to over $2 million. Located about 45 minutes south of San Francisco\, the District enrolls about 15\,000 students. The District will own its solar power system\, with SunPower providing operations and maintenance\, as well as a performance guarantee for 25 years. \nThis is a free webinar\, open to the public. If you are unavailable during the live event\, you can still register and a link will be sent to you. \nRegister Here! \n

SUMMARY:World Localization Day: Local Future
DESCRIPTION:Be part of this progressive\, inspirational and life-affirming movement for change! \nFor decades\, the localization movement has been emerging at the\ngrassroots on every continent\, under the radar of the mainstream media\nand with virtually no support from government. People have been\nreweaving the fabric of place-based economies that are human-scale and\nhuman-paced: economies that can serve as cornerstones for community\nand personal wellbeing. By shortening the link between production and\nconsumption\, they have reconnected both to each other and to the Earth.\nThis is the economics of happiness. \nLocalization is about \nsupporting local shops\, local farms and local businesses. It’s about keeping money within the community. It’s about investing in the place where you live– financially\, emotionally\,practically. It’s about building on the resources of the area (both human\nand natural) and living with ecological limits. It’s about saying no to giant unaccountable corporations. And it’s about pressing for political change: to move taxes\, subsidies and regulations away from supporting a few global monopolies towards a multitude of place-based businesses and industries. \nAfter COVID-19\, we can return to stressful disconnected lives and climate catastrophe\, or we can slow down\, scale down and rebuild our connections to each other and to the Earth. \n\n\nThis pre-recorded event will include \n\n\n\n\n\nTalks\nDiscussion\nMusic\nCelebrity Endorsements\nAnimations\nPolitical humour\nQ&A forum\nLive chat\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here for this World Localization Day! \nDonations greatly appreciated. \n

SUMMARY:The Virtual Ecosystem Scenario Viewer
DESCRIPTION:Please join a special webinar tomorrow: \nTuesday\, June 16\, at 2 pm EDT \nThe Virtual Ecosystem Scenario Viewer:\nA new tool for visualizing marine ecosystem models\nSpace is Limited! Reserve Your Seat Today! \nTo successfully monitor and recover marine species requires an understanding of the entire ocean ecosystem and the suite of impacts on their survival. Toward this end\, NOAA uses sophisticated modeling tools that incorporate population biology and a range of climate\, environmental\, ecological and human impacts to the ocean. The complexity of these models – making them so robust – limits the ability of most peple to understand them. The Virtual Ecosystem Scenario Viewer (VES-V) is an exciting new interactive visualization tool that show the results of these complex modeling dynamics in an easy-to-view manner. \nVES-V illustrates the responses of virtual marine ecosystems to a range of living marine resource management scenarios. These visualizations help all people see the application of models in managing marine resources\, and explore tradeoffs among scenarios in making decisions effecting our nation’s marine ecosystems. This tool demonstrates how we can better present and visualize marine ecosystems\, their marine resources\, and their collective responses to a range of pressures. VES-V holds enormous potential as an intuitive interactive problem based visualization tool for students and the public. \nFind out more about this exciting new tool!
