SUMMARY:Coping with Climate Anxiety in the Classroom and for Yourself: a Workshop for College & University Faculty
DESCRIPTION:This event takes place online on July 23 starting at 9 am Hawaii/ 12 noon Pacific/ 3 pm Eastern/ 8 pm Central European Time.\n  \nThe Worry & Hope study at the University of Hawaii revealed a pervasive emotional climate of fear\, anger\, sadness\, shame and hope about climate change. College faculty already knew this\, and are\, themselves\, feeling anxiety\, grief\, and additional stress that accompanies a sense of urgency and responsibility to teach and engage with students about climate change across all academic subject areas. \nThis two hour online workshop is for faculty to address their own emotions so that we can create and hold space in our classrooms for students to integrate and process hard realities about climate change impacts. If not here\, where? If not us\, who? A short overview of research on climate change education and pedagogies will be followed by experiential workshop going through 4 activities that you can then use in your classroom.  The activities are based on recent research as well as ecotherapy\, ecopsychology\, and the Active Hope work of Joanna Macy. \nThis event is Deeper Dive of the workshops from April\, May and June (but everyone is welcome to attend)\, in which we will continue to learn from each other and build a set of practices that work in a higher education setting. \nKrista Hiser is the Director of the University of Hawaii System Center for Sustainability Across the Curriculum (an AASHE Regional Center). She is also a longtime Professor of writing and teaches climate change communication\, project-based sustainability capstone\, and climate fiction. \nRegister today Deadline is July 22. Contact Krista Hiser with questions. \n

SUMMARY:JUST SUSTAINABILITIES IN URBAN PLANNING AND PRACTICE
DESCRIPTION:EcoDistricts is proud to announce that our next Webinar Wednesday will be hosted by Dr. Julian Agyeman of Tufts University\, a key thought leader of the movement to center racial equity and justice in the urban planning and design profession. \nIn this provocative and engaging conversation\, Julian will outline the concept of just sustainabilities as a response to the ‘equity deficit’ of current sustainability thinking and practice. He believes that what our cities can become (sustainable\, smart\, sharing\, and resilient) and who is allowed to belong in them (recognition of difference\, diversity\, and a right to the city) are fundamentally and inextricably interlinked. He will highlight his scholarship and writing with examples from urban planning and design\, urban agriculture and food justice\, and the concept of sharing cities. \nRegister for this Free Event Here

SUMMARY:Washington Center Summer Institute for Improving Undergraduate Education
DESCRIPTION:This year we have partnered with dynamic organizations to offer you in-depth pre-institute sessions. Included in your team registration is the opportunity to attend one of three partner sessions to kick-off your experience at the institute. We begin our spotlight of these partner sessions with…\n\nTurning Evidence into More Equitable Outcomes for Students: Lessons from the National Institute for Learning Outcomes (NILOA) and the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)\nFacilitated by Pat Hutchings (NILOA) and Jillian Kinzie (NSSE) \nThis pre-conference session is an opportunity to explore a central theme of the Institute and an important component in campus action plans: how to use student learning outcomes assessment to create a culture of ongoing improvement.  We’ll begin with your questions and experiences about assessment—both challenges and successes—building toward a set of principles for effective practice based on and supported by resources from NILOA and NSSE.  The goal is to help you build assessment into your campus action plan in a way that will support your most important goals—for more and better student learning\, more equitable outcomes\, stronger curricular and co-curricular connections\, and more effective teaching.

SUMMARY:Urban Forestry Carbon Offset Protocol: Developing Projects through the Offset Network
DESCRIPTION:The Offset Network\, now hosted by Second Nature\, presents a new pathway for colleges and universities to develop carbon offset methodologies. New methodologies can undergo a technical expert review process to obtain approval for use through the Offset Network. Learn about this new pathway\, and the first protocol to complete the technical review process- Duke University’s Urban Forestry Protocol. Presenters will introduce in detail the Urban Forestry Protocol\, including examples of how campuses can use the protocol to develop tree-planting projects in their own communities. The webinar will also discuss the technical review process\, and share how colleges and universities may work with the Offset Network to create their own new types of carbon offset methodologies. Join this webinar whether you are just starting to think about carbon offsets for your institution\, or have already developed offset projects and are interested in learning about new updates from the Offset Network. \nRegister for this free event HERE!

In addition to this discussion\, there will be a special HESI Members roundtable that will be held on 9 July to reflect on this discussion and encourage actionable next steps.\n\n\nEvent Objectives:\n\nReflect on where we are: Through the discussion\, to understand the impact of COVID-19 on Higher Education so we know “where we are”;\nExplore where we want to get to: Explore new ideas as to how we can regenerate\, renew and revitalise Higher Education and explore different pathway that would offer ideas on how to Redesign Higher & Further Education for the Future;\nBe inspired\, while considering access and equity\, to build collective intent: Be inspired by new\, propositional fresh thinking as to what we can achieve collectively while also ensuring that we consider inclusion and equity at all levels\, everywhere.\n\nREGISTRATION DEADLINE JULY 3.  More information/register here \nLearn more about HESI and consider helping it reach its full potential.  Share with your networks as appropriate.\n\n\nDocumentation:\n\nConcept and programme\n\n\nFlyer: Higher Education Sustainability Initiative 2020

SUMMARY:American Experience: The Vote
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the centennial of women’s suffrage with NEH-supported films and online resources \nWASHINGTON\, D.C. (July 2\, 2020) — The ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in August of 1920 was the culmination of a lengthy and hard-won struggle fought by legions of American women who organized\, campaigned\, marched\, and engaged in civil disobedience to achieve the goal of women’s suffrage. \nPremiering on PBS American Experience on July 6\, The Vote\, a two-part documentary funded by a $350\,000 grant to City Lore from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)\, tells the story of the final decade of the transformative cultural and political movement that resulted in the largest expansion of voting rights in U.S. history. Directed and produced by Michelle Ferrari\, the film examines the major turning points within the women’s suffrage movement between 1909 to 1920\, the debates among its leaders about the best tactics for effecting social and political change\, the unsung leaders of the movement\, and the controversies over gender roles and race that divided the nation. \nThe Vote is one of several NEH-supported projects focused on women’s history and 100 years of women’s suffrage. \nOn July 10\, PBS American Masters will also premiere the documentary Unladylike2020\, on female trailblazers in politics and civil rights. Directed and produced by Charlotte Mangin\, this special one-hour broadcast is part of an NEH-funded multimedia series that illuminates the inspiring stories of little-known American heroines. Unladylike2020 spotlights 26 American changemakers through 26 short online documentaries and includes biographies of women such as Bessie Coleman\, the first African American to earn an international pilot’s license; Susan La Flesche Picotte\, the first Native American physician who also founded a hospital on the Omaha Reservation; Jeanette Rankin\, the first woman elected to the U.S. Congress; and Gertrude Ederle\, the first woman to swim across the English Channel.

DESCRIPTION:Kristof\, an Oregon native\, reflects on the risks ahead for the U.S. and its standing as global leader. Should we aim to have countries fear us or admire us? Do we maximize our competitiveness through trade policy abroad or through educational investments at home? Is U.S. leadership passing to China\, India and Europe\, and if so how can we recover the mantle? What lessons are there from the rest of the world that America can learn from?
