DESCRIPTION:We’re looking for a new Campaign & Action Organizer to support and guide our volunteer teams in the planning and implementation of campaigns and actions that further the mission of 350PDX. While this position will work broadly across all 350PDX campaigns\, fossil fuel resistance work will be the primary focus. \n\n\nSee the job description here\n350PDX was founded in 2013 and has grown rapidly to become a leader in local and regional climate activism. We view everyone (volunteers\, board\, and staff) in 350PDX as climate justice activists. Our work is significant — to address climate disruption head-on through bold and creative measures that bring diverse people together at a time of divisiveness and insufficient state and federal action — and you could be a part of it! \nThis is a 0.70 FTE position (28 hours per week)\, paid hourly in the range of $18 – $19.60 per hour. Benefits include paid time off\, flexible work hours\, and a wellness stipend. DESCRIPTION:NOAA Planet Stewards is pleased to welcome Dr. Heather Coleman\, coordinator of NOAA’s Deep Sea Coral Research & Technology Program; Eva Barnett\, Outreach Manager for Green Fire Productions; and curriculum developers Jennifer Buffett and Sarah Lockman as our featured speakers this month. \nDeep-sea corals and sponges support complex and productive ecosystems but are still largely undiscovered. These animals can live for hundreds or even thousands of years. They can grow to the size of a minivan or in reefs up to 300 feet off the seafloor. They support commercially valuable fish habitat in every region of the U.S. and hold great biomedical potential. \nNOAA’s Deep Sea Coral Research and Technology Program coordinates research on deep-sea coral and sponge ecosystems building our limited understanding of where and how they exist. New species are identified every year\, and researchers are constantly learning about processes such as coral growth and recovery from damage. \nThis presentation will cover recent advances in the science and protection of deep-sea corals\, and introduce newly released lessons and activities that build understanding of these hidden ecosystems and other crucial ocean topics. \nThe Exploring Ocean Frontiers Resources accompany the award-winning Ocean Frontiers film series\, portraying how unlikely allies – government\, industry\, science and conservation – are working together to find solutions that benefit ocean ecosystems and economies. These new secondary lessons and post-secondary discussion guides are inquiry-based\, NGSS-connected and full of engaging activities designed to facilitate classroom explorations into ocean planning and stewardship\, collaborative science\, marine biodiversity\, ocean data portals and stakeholder engagement. The materials are available to teachers at no cost.

DESCRIPTION:One of my top priorities as an architect\, urban planner\, author\, and activist focuses on updating curricula in our academic programming to meet the need for professionals who are highly educated in climate change mitigation and intersectional sustainability. This is one of the driving motivations behind my writing\, Fixing Your City: Creating Thriving Neighborhoods and Adapting to a Changing World. \nI invite you to engage with me and a growing cadre of colleagues committed to infusing our fields with this urgently needed upgrade to the professional planner or architect’s palette of expertise. My Radical Transformation Strategy\, outlined in the book\, provides a strong argument for this evolution. \nTo that end\, I hope you can attend a special book launch event of Fixing Your City at 7 p.m. on Thursday\, March 14\, at Trinity Episcopal Church\, Kempton Hall 147 NW 19th Ave\, Portland. \nMy book: \n\nidentifies a planning process that lays out solutions to critical urban issues and guarantees their implementation\naddresses climate change and congestion with an integrated land use/transportation strategy that reduces carbon emissions by eliminating and shortening auto trips\nproposes a new class of professionals\, urban architects\, who would design cities that work\, both for residents and for our endangered earth.\n\nMayor Ted Wheeler has written in regard to my plan\, “I believe that this (transformation) strategy will provide our city with innovative solutions for dealing with population growth\, congestion\, and global warming.” \nBill McKibben\, author The End of Nature\, founder 350.org\, has this to say: “Cities are going to have to transform themselves if we’re to make the progress we need in the climate fight — transform themselves to deal with the trouble now coming\, and transform themselves to cause less damage. George Crandall reminds us that along the way these kinds of repairs can also produce cities that are more fun to inhabit.”

SUMMARY:Teaching to the SDGs through Sustainability Action Research and Sustainable Business Curricula
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030 provide colleges and universities an unprecedented opportunity to prepare our students for careers that address a universally recognized set of global goals for humanity. But how can we effectively integrate the SDGs into our curricula? What sort of academic preparation should we provide? \nAASHE STARS Gold-rated George Mason University provides a model for how curricula from general education through to graduate education address sustainability writ large\, and the SDGs in particular. After introducing this university’s diverse means for engaging students in learning and acting to advance the SDGs\, this webinar will focus in on to advanced undergraduate courses – one focused on sustainability action research\, the other on business and sustainability – in order to model how the SDGs can bring pragmatism and shared direction into students learning in professional development. Specific lesson plans and their outcomes will be shared\, along with discussion of how trade-offs and strategic integration across global goals help to advance students’ higher order problem-solving skills with respect to wicked sustainability problems. We will conclude with an exploration of how businesses and higher education may collaborate to prepare the next generation of leaders\, professionals\, and citizens to realize the SDGs’ bold and critical global vision for the next decade of sustainable development.  For more information about George Mason University’s initiatives\, please email: sustainu@gmu.edu \nDann Sklarew is a Professor of Applied Ecology and Sustainability Science and the Coordinator of Sustainability Initiatives at George Mason University. His research and teaching focus upon realizing ecological stewardship and sustainability at personal to global scales. Initiatives have ranged from automating early warning of seasonal drought in sub-Saharan Africa to analyzing impacts of climate variability on Potomac River pollution and eutrophication. Dr. Sklarew has chaired over twenty graduate committees and served as the principal investigator for one million dollars in sponsored projects involving over 40\,000 secondary school students\, a national telecommunications company\, Virginia’s most populous locality\, and others.  Dr. Sklarew contributions have been recognized with receipt of Mason’s Sustainability Hero Award\, Teaching Excellence Award\, Career Connection Faculty of the Year Award\, and Jack Wood Award for Town-Gown Relations\, as well as other local and national awards for teams of which he was a partner.
