SUMMARY:HEATWAVE: Empathy for the HVAC ….a gamified virtual reality experiment
DESCRIPTION:Join us for HEATWAVE\, an innovative research project conducted by Portland State University’s Research-based Design Initiative\, Bynum Laboratories and Opsis Architecture. \nThe relationship between people and the control systems in a building is a critical factor in overall building energy performance. Thoughtfully designed passive systems are ineffective unless operated as intended\, resulting in a performance gap between predicted energy consumption and actual energy use. Inspired by the need to have better “behaved” occupants\, the team embarked on a research project to study how gamified virtual reality could build upon the user’s emotional relationship with a space\, improving their ability and desire to effectively utilize passive and advanced systems such as shades\, ceiling fans\, lighting controls\, and operable windows. \nThis event features an opportunity to play HEATWAVE\, enjoy refreshments\, and engage in lively discussion about the future of VR in design as we move beyond basic visualization.

They bring back new life. \nThis year’s TEDxMtHood speaker line-up is confirmed and will bring Portland’s decomposers to the stage.  Their actions are deep. Their ideas are regenerative. They break down the struggle and offer new hope for a better\, healthier world. \nJoin us on October 13th where we celebrate our teachers\, our artists\, our friends\, our neighbors\, our leaders\, our activists\, our scientists\, our system revitalizers\, our life-bringers\, our hope-restorers – our decomposers.

SUMMARY:Global Climate Change Week
DESCRIPTION:October 15-21 \nClimate change poses a major threat to sustainable development. As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says\, ‘Climate change will create new poor between now and 2100\, in developing and developed countries\, and jeopardize sustainable development’ (2014). \nFor this reason\, it is important for everyone concerned about sustainable development to take action on climate change. One way for academic communities in particular to do so is by taking part in Global Climate Change Week (GCCWeek)\, an initiative designed to encourage academic communities – including academics\, students\, and non-academic staff at universities – in all disciplines and countries to engage with each other\, their communities\, and policy makers on climate change. \nStart planning now.  Learn More Here.
