DESCRIPTION:Nature education and outdoor experiences grants support and create partnerships in local communities that improve water quality\, restore fish and wildlife habitat and connect people with nature. These grants prioritize programs that advance racial equity\, diversity and inclusion\, make communities more resilient to climate change and include greater community engagement. \nFunding is available for projects that promote cultural\, environmental and economic equity. As examples\, projects could: \n\nbuild relationships and partnerships that promote nature education and outdoor experiences by and for people of color\nincrease the number of visitors and staff at parks and natural areas who represent diverse racial\, ethnic and cultural groups\ndevelop the capacity of organizations that serve people of color to lead nature education and cultural programs in parks and natural areas\noffer school-aged children\, with a special emphasis on students of color\, hands-on nature education in local natural areas\nintegrate outdoor nature education with school-based and science\, technology\, engineering and math curriculum\nsupport community engagement and nature education programs that include hands-on restoration activities to improve fish and wildlife habitat in local communities\nsupport mentorship\, youth corps and job skill development or otherwise prepare participants for continuing careers or higher education in natural resources\, nature education or other nature-related science\, technology\, engineering or math fields.\n\nWho is eligible? \nCommunity groups\, nonprofits\, neighborhoods\, individuals\, faith groups and service groups with nonprofit or other tax-exempt status may apply. SUMMARY:RCE Asia-Pacific SDG Youth Challenge 2020: EOI Open Now!
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 RCE SDG Youth Challenge ‘Youth for the Goals’ is an exciting and unique youth-led initiative focused on delivering the SDGs at a local level. This year\, the Challenge will be focusing on SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities\, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production\, and SDG 15: Life on Land. Projects are welcome from any RCEs interested in participating. \nConceived by Asia-Pacific youth leaders at RCE Greater Western Sydney (Australia) and RCE Yogyakarta (Indonesia)\, the Challenge uses a peer-to-peer learning model coupled with virtual mentoring support to empower and enable youth leaders to engage with each other and to deliver grassroots projects that matter to them and their communities. \nThe Challenge invites young people to get empowered and engaged in their local communities and RCE networks. Youth are invited to either create their own or build on an existing project\, with support from their RCE or an organisation\, that will make a difference for them\, their community\, and the planet. Projects could include creating a video documentary\, youth camps\, leadership programme\, school workshops\, clean-up events\, art installations and more – the choice is yours as long as it is in line with the Challenge theme (SDG 11\, 12 and/or 15\, underpinned by SDG 4). Projects must be led by a youth lead (35 years or younger)\, can be run by an individual or team (team doesn’t have to be youth exclusively) who are committed to the project from February – October 2020. \nTo date\, the challenge has engaged directly with over 19\,000 youth and delivered 39 individual sustainability youth-led projects across nine countries. DESCRIPTION:The NOAA Office of Education has issued a competitive funding opportunity for projects designed to build environmental literacy of K-12 students and the public so they are knowledgeable of the ways in which their community can become more resilient to extreme weather and/or other environmental hazards\, and become involved in achieving that resilience.\nThis funding opportunity is soliciting two types of projects through separate competitive priorities. \n\nPriority 1 will support new projects ($250\,000 – $500\,000 per project) located in the Southern and Western Regions of the United States.\nThe Southern Region includes the following states and territories: Alabama\, Arkansas\, Florida\, Georgia\, Louisiana\, Mississippi\, New Mexico\, Oklahoma\, Puerto Rico\, Tennessee\, Texas\, and the United States Virgin Islands.\nThe Western Region includes the following states and territories: Alaska\, American Samoa\, Arizona\, California\, Guam\, Hawaii\, Idaho\, Montana\, Nevada\, Northern Mariana Islands\, Oregon\, Utah\, and Washington. \nPriority 2 will support the evolution of projects funded under the 2015-2016 funding opportunities from this program. The list of awards that are eligible can be found here: https://go.usa.gov/xVGzr. Funding levels for this priority are $100\,000 – $500\,000 per project.\nFor both priorities\, eligible applicants are: \n\ninstitutions of higher education;\nK-12 public and independent schools and school systems;\nother nonprofits\, including community-based organizations and informal education institutions\, such as museums\, zoos\, and aquariums;\nstate and local government agencies; and\nIndian tribal governments in the United States.\n\nPlease note: we do not anticipate issuing a solicitation for applications next year. DESCRIPTION:Greater Portland voters approve $475 million Metro parks and nature bond measure\nVoters across greater Portland on Tuesday approved a renewal of Metro’s parks and nature bond measure\, which will raise $475 million to protect clean water\, restore fish and wildlife habitat and provide opportunities for people to enjoy nature close to home. \n  \nMeasure 26-203 is passing 67% to 33%\, according to election results from Clackamas\, Multnomah and Washington counties. The measure does not raise taxes and instead renews the current property tax rate of $0.19 per $1\,000 of assessed value. It costs about $4 a month for a home assessed at $250\,000. \nMoney from the bond measure will support six program areas: land purchase and restoration\, improvements at Metro parks\, Nature in Neighborhoods capital grants\, “local share” money to support local park providers\, walking and biking trails\, and complex community projects\, such as providing public access to Willamette Falls. \n  \nAll projects supported with bond money are required to prioritize community engagement\, racial equity and climate resiliency. DESCRIPTION:The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)\, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education (ED)\, has awarded a $650\,000 cooperative agreement to the civics education group iCivics to lead a coalition of experts in assessing the state of\, and best practices in\, the teaching of American history\, civics\, and government in K-12 education. \nEducating for American Democracy: A Roadmap for Excellence in History and Civics Education for All Learners will bring together more than 100 leading academics and practitioners in education\, civics\, history\, and political science for convenings at Louisiana State University and Arizona State University to evaluate the current state of history and civics curricula across the country. Informed by these discussions\, the group will issue a “roadmap for excellence” that would outline for teachers\, schools\, and district and state policy-makers high-priority civic content areas\, and recommend instructional strategies and best practices for integrating the teaching of civics and history at every grade level. \nThis roadmap and accompanying report on the convenings’ findings will be released prior to a national forum in September 2020 in Washington\, D.C.\, co-hosted by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History and the National Archives and Records Administration Foundation. \n“As the United States looks toward our 250th anniversary as a nation in 2026\, it is critical that our K-12 educational system teaches the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and the democratic principles on which the country was founded\,” said NEH Chairman Jon Parrish Peede. “The National Endowment for the Humanities is pleased to be working with the Educating for American Democracy team to identify ways to improve the teaching and learning of American history and government so that all students gain an appreciation of the workings of the world’s oldest constitutional democracy.” \nThe Educating for American Democracy project is a partnership between the Edmond J. DESCRIPTION:The International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) program supports international research and research-related activities for U.S. science and engineering students. SUMMARY:Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
DESCRIPTION:The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: (1) REU Sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. REU Sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department or may offer interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme. Proposals with an international dimension are welcome. (2) REU Supplements may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements or may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects. \nWho May Submit Proposals: \nThe categories of proposers eligible to submit proposals to the National Science Foundation are identified in the NSF Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide(PAPPG)\, Chapter I.E. \nWho May Serve as PI: \nFor REU Site proposals\, a single individual may be designated as the Principal Investigator. DESCRIPTION:The nominations for the Climate Adaptation Leadership Awards\, hosted by the Climate Adaptation Strategy group\, are now available. \nCategories\nFor the 2019 Award year\, each Award nomination must identify the category that best describes the individual or organization being nominated. Awards and honorable mentions are expected in each of these categories depending on the nominations received. \n\nFederal government\nState or Local government\nTribal government\nOther organizations (for example\, industry\, environmental\, academic\, nongovernmental organization)\nBroad Partnership Organizations (co-led efforts)\nIndividual Leadership\nStudent Leadership\n\nEligibility\n\nBoth government (federal\, state\, tribal\, and local) and non-governmental organizations are eligible.\nIndividuals and organizations may submit nominations. Self-nominations and third party nominations are acceptable.\nIndividuals and organizations should be based in the United States and focus primarily on U.S. resources.\nIndividuals and organizations can represent sectors other than natural resources (air\, forests\, soils\, water\, fish\, wildlife and plants)\, but must demonstrate how their work has tangible impacts on natural resources conservation.\nNominations may be for efforts that are ongoing or recently completed.\nPrevious award recipients and honorable mentions may be nominated again if their work is significantly different than the work for which they were originally recognized.\n\nNomination Questions\nThe 2019 Award Nomination requests the following information: \n\nYour organization and contact information\, including your relationship to the nominee.\nContact information for the nominee.\nCategory in which the nominee should be considered.\nGeographic scope of the nominee’s work.\nEcosystems addressed by the nominees work.\nA succinct summary of the work (less than 200 characters).\nWhich NFWPCAS goals are addressed by the work? SUMMARY:SDGs in Action Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Are you involved in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) where you live? Can you film it\, animate it or otherwise tell that story in a video? The SDGs in Action Film Festival\, coordinated by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ Division for SDGs\, seeks short films that highlight how people and organizations around the world are taking action for the 17 global goals. The Festival was launched in 2018 in connection with the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development that takes place each July at UN Headquarters in New York. The competition offers amateur filmmakers around the globe the chance to submit animated or live-action films up to 20 minutes long that showcase a person or project working on tangible solutions to the world’s biggest threats and making the SDGs our reality. \nEntries will be accepted in the following categories for 2019: \n\nProtecting our planet\nReducing inequalities\nBuilding peace\nEnsuring quality education and jobs\nYoung Filmmaker (24 years old or younger)\nSDGs in Virtual Reality/360 degrees (films 2 minutes or less)\n\nThe top video in each category will be shown at the SDGs in Action Film Festival in July 2019 at or near UN Headquarters in New York\, with the filmmakers invited to attend and participate in Festival-related activities. \nEnter here by 26 April: https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/hlpf/2019/filmfestival \nGood luck!
