SUMMARY:Making Climate History Anya Zilberstein Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Naturalists at the time observed rising ocean temperatures\, sinking glaciers\, and a disintegrating coastal ice shelf. Politicians\, in turn\, acted quickly on this information to reinvigorate Arctic exploration and the hunt for a Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans. Since then\, modern scientists determined these were just fleeting phenomena\, very different from the human-caused climate change we are witnessing today. \nIn this lecture\, Anya Zilberstein will discuss the relationships between past and present climate science. Newer\, more precise science is vital. But\, she will argue\, it cannot help us interpret the politics of climate science in the past or understand the significance of climate history for the highly charged debates of the present. By recognizing that the uses and misuses of climate science are hardly new\, historians can help work against the presumption that the political problems of climate change are completely unique to our own time. \n  \nAnya Zilberstein is Associate Professor of History at Concordia University in Montreal. Her book\, A Temperate Empire: Making Climate Change in Early America (Oxford University Press\, 2016)\, won the Berkshire Conference Book Prize and she is co-editor of the new Routledge book series New/Old Natures: Histories of the Environment. Her research and publications encompass the history of environmental sciences and empire\, the early British Atlantic world\, environmental history\, climate history\, food history\, and the history of race\, migration\, and slavery. She is currently working on the history of animal migration (focused on theories of long distance bird migration) and on a second book\, Fodder for Empire: Feeding People Like Other Animals Since the Eighteenth Century\, which explores early forms of nutritional expertise and prescription diets for feeding people and domesticated animals alike.

What place does social justice have in science? What does it mean as scientists\, to perform science that is mindful of the environment and all the communities that our discoveries and technologies may affect? What does it mean as scientists to show up for and empower underrepresented groups in STEM? What are we doing now? SUMMARY:Bridging the Generational Gap on Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intergenerational conversation on climate choices: how we should meet the challenges of a warming planet? \nTogether\, guests will share how climate change affects them\, their families and friends. We will then consider various options to address this challenge\, using actions and drawbacks as examples to illustrate what each option entails. Next\, we’ll aim to identify areas of common ground and issues that still must be worked through. Our goal is to assist people in deliberating and weighing options for action against the things people hold valuable. As an outcome\, guests will have an opportunity to share specific actions that they can personally take to address this challenge. SAGE is also interested in identifying specific project ideas for our Legacy Fellows\, including projects well-suited for intergenerational action.

SUMMARY:SAGE Panel on our Current Political Climate and Political Discourse
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a panel featuring Jack Miller\, a political science professor at Portland State University\, and Rebecca Tweed\, a top political strategist with over a decade of experience on state and local campaigns. Together they will examine the current political climate and discuss ways of promoting a healthy political discourse. They will seek to explain how political polarization breeds distrust\, disengagement\, and a retreat into opposing political echo chambers\, and they will explore ideas for changing the way we practice and talk about politics from across the political divide. \nFrom their different vantage points\, Miller and Tweed will elaborate on their ideas about reducing polarization and moving our communities in a direction of a healthy interaction and engagement. They share a commitment to helping Americans with different ideologies learn to work together on common concerns and shared goals\, even as they may disagree about what solutions to employ. The event concludes with audience questions and a brief discussion about how political divisiveness affects us personally\, how we may have more in common than we think\, and what each of us can do to promote a healthier political discourse.

From global temperature rise and warming oceans to shrinking ice sheets and sea level rising\, we see how Earth is changing itself to accommodate for the increasing destruction of the environment (cite). However\, from the beginning of time\, our ancestors have been very kind to Earth resulting in a variety of indigenous sustainability practices. Join us for an open discussion about climate change and how it affects our home and people as well as share ways in which your communities have sustained Earth. \nWe strive to make our events inclusive and accessible. SUMMARY:Permaculture Design for Climate Resilience with Andrew Millison
DESCRIPTION:As the climate shifts around the globe\, it is increasingly important for the permaculture designer to understand global trends and incorporate sound design to mitigate negative impacts. This talk focuses on looking at scientific projections of future scenarios from the lens of several climate classification systems\, learning about analogue (similar) climates\, and determining the major design essentials for resilience to future (and present) changes. \nBy analyzing the agro-ecologies of other global locales that match our region’s climate change projections\, we are more well-equipped to assess and implement local strategies for food system adaptation and resilience. \nAbout the Presenter: \n\nAndrew Millison has been studying\, teaching and practicing Permaculture since he took his first design course in 1996. He started teaching Permaculture at the college level in 2001\, and has been an instructor at OSU in the Horticulture Department since 2009. He embedded himself within Oregon State University\, and created the first Permaculture Massive Open Online Course with over 40\,000 students. Working at a major state university\, he has worked to promote the acceptance of permaculture into a mainstream academic institution.

SUMMARY:Columbia's Tim Boyle on Free Trade and Global Engagement at the Old Church
DESCRIPTION:Directly and indirectly\, Oregonians depend on free and fair trade. Whether it is Oregon farmers exporting their goods\, workers on the docks loading and unloading imported or exported cars and other products\, or innovators in the apparel and footwear industries creating the next hit for global markets\, Oregonians benefit from global engagement. \nFrom restrictions on international travel and legal immigration to tax reform to pulling back from international trade agreements\, how have the uncertainty created by recent policies effected the rules of global engagement and the ability to create economic opportunity?  What can we do to inspire a deeper investment in education at all levels so that Oregonians are prepared to understand and engage in the global economy? And how might we reinvigorate the idea that economic growth and quality of life are the direct beneficiaries of global engagement and free trade– a notion that is too often lost in political debates on all sides of the political aisle?

SUMMARY:Samantha Power Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating its 20th anniversary\, WorldOregon’s International Speaker Series is one of the nation’s premier platforms for international affairs. For two decades\, the series has put you in the room with the global leaders\, visionaries\, and inspiring voices that are changing our world. And this year is no different\, presenting an array of the people\, the big ideas\, and the issues framing our role on the world stage. \nFORMER UN AMBASSADOR & PULITZER PRIZE WINNER\nWhat can one person do? At a crossroads of debate about our role on the global stage and polarizing politics at home\, Samantha Power explores this urgent question—delving into a call for a clearer eye\, a kinder heart\, and a more open and civil hand in our politics and daily lives. \nBiography \nFormer U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power is a leading voice internationally for principled American engagement in the world. One of TIME’s “100 Most Influential People\,” she is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author\, war correspondent\, and the Anna Lindh Professor of Practice at Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Law School. Her recently published book\, The Education of an Idealist\, chronicles her years in public service and reflects on the role of human rights and humanitarian ideals in contemporary geopolitics. \nPower spent half of her career explaining complex geopolitical events and eight years at the UN helping to shape them. As the 28th U.S. Ambassador to the UN\, Power became the public face of U.S. opposition to Russian aggression in Ukraine and Syria\, negotiated the toughest sanctions in a generation against North Korea\, lobbied to secure the release of political prisoners\, and helped mobilize global action against ISIL (ISIS).
