SUMMARY:Sharing Electric Power in a Time of Need and Solar Oregon Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The magnitude 9.0 earthquake\, ensuing tsunami\, and nuclear meltdowns of 2011 showed Japan the importance of sharing limited electric power during the disaster and the year-long recovery. And Japan learned sharing wasn’t easy using their existing grid. They have set out to change this. Delightfully\, the investments needed to improve sharing not only increase the grid’s resilience but help the grid accommodate increasing amounts of wind and solar energy. And it pays for itself.

SUMMARY:How to Live Forever: The Enduring Power of Connecting the Generations
DESCRIPTION:Join us on November 27 in Portland to hear renowned author and longtime friend of SAGE\, Marc Freedman\, talk about his new book\, How to Live Forever: The Enduring Power of Connecting the Generations.\n\nFreedman\, the CEO and Founder of Encore.org\, was our first Visiting SAGE speaker in 2013. He was named Social Entrepreneur of the Year by the World Economic Forum and has been recognized as one of the nation’s leading social entrepreneurs by Fast Company Magazine.\n\nAt this event\, Freedman tells the story of his quest to answer some of life’s most urgent questions: With so many living longer\, what is the meaning of the years beyond 50? How do we find happiness when we know life is long and time is short? Freedman’s book is a personal call to find fulfillment by connecting with the next generation and forging a legacy of love that lives beyond us.\n\nIt’s going to be a great night with room for Q&A at the end\, so come ready to participate. SUMMARY:How We Come Together: Conversations Inspired by Van Jones
DESCRIPTION:Van Jones’ insight into the contemporary American experience helps us recognize how individuals and institutions have “come apart” from each other\, and inspires pursuit of the many paths to coming back together. Following his Visiting Sage public address on September 12\, we invite you to join us over dessert and drinks to digest the themes Van asserts in Beyond the Messy Truth\, his New York Times Bestseller that offers “a blueprint for transforming collective anxiety and strife into meaningful change.” \nAll are welcome for this intimate evening of conversation and community. We hope to see you at Van’s Portland lecture\, but you don’t need to have attended the talk or read the whole book to have a meaningful discussion about the current divides facing our communities and political institutions. Join the intergenerational group SAGE\, the Coalition of Communities of Color\, and Beneficial State Bank for an evening of cross-cultural conversation\, new connections\, desserts\, and collaborative solutions for coming together. \nMany thanks to The Joinery for welcoming us into their gorgeous showroom for the evening and to certified B Corps Nossa Familia Coffee and Winderlea Vineyard and Winery for the beverages!
