SUMMARY:Fixing Your City: Creating Thriving Neighborhoods and Adapting to a Changing World
DESCRIPTION:One of my top priorities as an architect\, urban planner\, author\, and activist focuses on updating curricula in our academic programming to meet the need for professionals who are highly educated in climate change mitigation and intersectional sustainability. This is one of the driving motivations behind my writing\, Fixing Your City: Creating Thriving Neighborhoods and Adapting to a Changing World. \nI invite you to engage with me and a growing cadre of colleagues committed to infusing our fields with this urgently needed upgrade to the professional planner or architect’s palette of expertise. My Radical Transformation Strategy\, outlined in the book\, provides a strong argument for this evolution. \nTo that end\, I hope you can attend a special book launch event of Fixing Your City at 7 p.m. on Thursday\, March 14\, at Trinity Episcopal Church\, Kempton Hall 147 NW 19th Ave\, Portland. \nMy book: \n\nidentifies a planning process that lays out solutions to critical urban issues and guarantees their implementation\naddresses climate change and congestion with an integrated land use/transportation strategy that reduces carbon emissions by eliminating and shortening auto trips\nproposes a new class of professionals\, urban architects\, who would design cities that work\, both for residents and for our endangered earth.\n\nMayor Ted Wheeler has written in regard to my plan\, “I believe that this (transformation) strategy will provide our city with innovative solutions for dealing with population growth\, congestion\, and global warming.” \nBill McKibben\, author The End of Nature\, founder 350.org\, has this to say: “Cities are going to have to transform themselves if we’re to make the progress we need in the climate fight — transform themselves to deal with the trouble now coming\, and transform themselves to cause less damage. George Crandall reminds us that along the way these kinds of repairs can also produce cities that are more fun to inhabit.”

SUMMARY:GlobalPDX Lunch & Learn
DESCRIPTION:When the member nations of the UN signed onto Agenda 2030\, in 2015\, they established 17 aspirational Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets to achieve by 2030. While overwhelming at first\, each of the SDGs\, from poverty and hunger to energy and peace\, are being addressed to some degree by organizations in our communities. What are you doing at the local level and beyond? How can we align our organizations with broader initiatives\, scale up efforts to address important social\, economic\, and environmental issues\, and amplify our stories? \n  \nThis interactive workshop is led by Dr. Kim Smith\, co-founder of the Greater Portland Sustainability Education Network\, PCC sociology instructor\, and liaison to UNESCO. Bring your lunch and join in a presentation\, mapping exercise\, and discussion to connect the local to the global and explore our collective impact! This event is free and we welcome for-profits\, non-profits and anyone interested in this topic to attend. Check out our Facebook Event page for more information.

SUMMARY:Creating Healthy Communities: The Connection Between Nature and Health Equity
DESCRIPTION:The Intertwine Alliance is excited to continue its series of Health & Nature Forums with an event focusing on health equity. \nHealth equity\, the creation of accessible pathways to health resources and benefits for everyone in the community\, has become a greater focus of attention in health care. As we examine the many factors that influence one’s wellbeing\, issues like economic status\, jobs\, transportation and housing are now seen and understood as critical determinants of health\, lessening the focus on one’s genetic makeup. In addition\, leaders are looking beyond these social issues to ideas that the environment itself can play a larger role in determining individual and community health. \nJoin other community health and conservation leaders for an in-depth exploration of these ideas\, and help us formulate creative strategies for injecting nature into this important community-wide conversation. We’ll announce speakers\, panels and other details soon. \nThis will be the seventh Health & Nature Forum since the series launched back in 2014\, and we look forward to seeing both return and new faces. Questions? Please email Program Director David Cohen at david@theintertwine.org. \n

SUMMARY:Open: The Progressive Case for Free Trade\, Immigration & Global Capital
DESCRIPTION:With the winds of trade wars blowing as they have not done in decades\, and critics on both left and right flirting with protectionism\, economist Kimberly Clausing of Reed College\, explores how a free and open economy may continue to be a better way to advance the interests of working Americans. Why does globalization have a bad name – does it\, as liberal critics say\, exploit the poor and undermine labor? Or on the conservative critique\, does globalization tilt the field against advanced economies? Join us for a compelling discussion on open economies\, on immigration and newcomers’ role in growth\, innovation\, and entrepreneurship\, and – against a backdrop of fragile international bi- and multi-lateral agreements – what the future of free trade looks like. \nKimberly Clausing is Thormund Miller and Walter Mintz Professor of Economics at Reed College. She is one of the country’s leading experts on the taxation of multinational corporations\, a subject on which she has testified before Congress. Clausing has written for the New York Timesand Fortune and spoken on National Public Radio.
