The SDGs offer an aspirational vision for a sustainable future\, with many tangible actions that individuals or organizations can implement at the local level. Come learn and share about how they are already alive and well in our work and communities\, and explore how you can amplify them in your own life. Spend the evening with Kim Smith\, Co-founder of the Greater Portland Sustainability Education Network (GPSEN) as she links the SDGs with the principles of Conscious Capitalism. \nSnacks and beverages will be provided\, including beer and wine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Speaker\nKim Smith\, Ph.D. has taught sociology and served in a variety of administrative roles at Portland Community College (PCC) since 1996. She is the co-founder of the Greater Portland Sustainability Education Network (GPSEN)\, a UNU Regional Center of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development\, and works with many non-profits. She has represented the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE)\, the US Partnership for ESD\, and United Nations University at multiple international conferences\, including Rio+20 and the UNESCO World Summit on ESD\, and served on AASHE’s Board of Directors from 2014-2017. We’ll consider what it will really mean for urban\, suburban\, and rural communities to rely on a highly localized and energy-efficient food systems—and we’ll discuss actionable suggestions for what can be done right now to create them.

Fighting for climate and environmental justice\, Fernandez won her first major battle at 17\, when she helped defeat a proposed controversial natural-gas pipeline running through her community. Still in her 20s\, Fernandez is a seasoned community organizer and advocate\, receiving numerous awards including the Brower Youth Award\, the Gates Millennium Scholarship\, and the Jane Goodall Global Leadership Award\, among others. Currently Director of Organizing at the Community Water Center in the Central Valley of California\, Fernandez speaks across the U.S. and internationally on organizing and leveraging community-driven solutions for environmental equity.

Gov case (AKA Juliana v. US) has its latest and most pivotal court date yet\, right here in our city.\n\n\nRSVP here!\n\n\nOn June 4\, they will have a hearing before the 9th Circuit Court here in Portland to rule on two issues:\n\n\nWhether the case is constitutional\, and should thus be heard by the supreme court\, and;\nWhether the plaintiffs’ injunction to stop all new fossil fuel infrastructure projects will be accepted. (This injunction would stop all fossil fuel expansion operations in the US until the end of the trial!!)\n\n\n\nThis is a BIG DEAL!!\nWe need to show the judges\, the politicians\, and the world\, that we support these young people and that this case must go forward! This will be a giant movement moment for the whole world\, happening right here in our city. 1\,000 people will be in attendance. Each year\, we host a major keynote address to elevate an important issue facing the future. On Sunday\, May 19\, we are focusing attention on the future of our oceans\, and hosting global oceans champion Dr. Sylvia Earle.
