SUMMARY:Exploitation and Empathy: Navigating the Dynamics between Donors\, Staff\, and Program Participants
DESCRIPTION:Since the term “poverty porn” first appeared in 1981\, much has been said about the exploitation of human suffering to inspire charitable giving. Yet four decades later\, many organizations still struggle to communicate their impact in a way that authentically represents the issue and preserves the dignity of those affected by it. How do we portray our program participants as their own agents of change\, while admitting that they also need our help? How do we emotionally connect funders to our clients\, without simplifying their challenges or minimizing cultural differences? \nIn a refreshing take on this provocative issue\, Caliopy Glaros of Philanthropy without Borders invites attendees to move beyond lexicon and imagery\, to embrace methods that both challenge assumptions and inspire empathy. Drawing from her experience in international donor travel as well as research from social psychology\, she provides an innovative approach to building capacity for empathy while motivating others to action. \nAttendees will leave this session with a new means of evaluating interactions between donors\, staff\, and program participants\, as well as tools they can begin implementing right away.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister below to reserve your seat at this fantastic event!

SUMMARY:Peace Memorial Park Clean-Up
DESCRIPTION:This is a great way to become involved in a community beautification project here in the Lloyd neighborhood. Thousands of people walk and ride their bikes by this space every day and we aim to make it a place where people\, and pollinators\, can take a moment to enjoy the beauty of Portland. This space will enhance the original message of peace that Veterans For Peace created in the space\, and include a pollinator garden\, with information on their importance to our ecosystem. Soon we will be showcasing 3 park redesign options to gather public input on what the final design should be. Project partner PLACE Studios is providing the design alternatives and we will send information for when and where the meeting will be held. For now please join us\, and the goats\, this Saturday to keep the park looking good!

SUMMARY:2019 Walk with Refugees & Immigrants
DESCRIPTION:The third annual Walk with Refugees & Immigrants is presented by PP&R’s Parks for New Portlanders program in conjunction with the Portland Bureau of Transportation’s Sunday Parkways\, local nonprofits and refugee and immigrant organizations\, and local elected leaders. The event celebrates the unique experiences of Portlanders of all ages and backgrounds. An estimated 5\,000 people took part in the Walk in 2018. \n“This event is a highlight of our Parks for New Portlanders program\,” says Portland Parks Commissioner Nick Fish. “We’re proud to welcome people of all backgrounds to Portland.” \nAll are welcome to take part\, to support and celebrate with everyone who calls the Rose City home. Afterwards enjoy delicious food\, multicultural music\, and family fun at Knott Park. \nFor more information about the Walk in English and several other languages\, please visit the event web page. \n“Portland Parks & Recreation welcomes everyone to our park places and spaces\,” says  Director Adena Long. “It doesn’t matter if you’ve been in the City for a week – or your entire life. We are proud to celebrate Portland’s newcomers and help show them they are welcomed\, appreciated\, and to introduce everyone to the wonders of Portland Parks & Recreation.” \n“Imagine never having had a country or community of your own – until arriving in Portland”\, says SB Langh\, a refugee from Southeast Asia. “I want to express my sincerest appreciation to Oregonians in general and to Portlanders in particular for their acceptance and support in all areas of our lives. The Walk with Refugees & Immigrants event shows us the love and care our neighbors have for the city’s newcomers.” \n\nAbout the Parks for New Portlanders program \nThe Parks for New Portlanders (PNP) program is part of Portland Parks & Recreation. The goal is to provide opportunities for recent immigrants and refugees to connect with the broader Portland community. PNP works with community partners and City leaders to design and implement culturally relevant programs. PNP strives to ensure that City services and spaces are welcoming and accessible to communities of color\, new immigrants\, and refugees. \nWith one in five Portlanders now foreign-born\, addressing the needs of this new and diverse population is crucial as they transition to Portland’s community. The PNP program hosts sporting events like Portland World Soccer in the summer and the Intercultural Basketball Tournament in the fall.

SUMMARY:Saving the Environment: My Immigrant and Activist Journey
DESCRIPTION:2019 INTERNATIONAL SPEAKER SERIES—FUTURE LEADERS\, GLOBAL VOICES\nWorldOregon welcomes Erica Fernandez to the Portland’5 Newmark Theatre on Sunday\, June 23\, 2019 at 7pm \, as part of the 2019 International Speaker Series. \n2019 International Speaker Series \nWorldOregon’s International Speaker Series\, going into its 19th season\, is one of the nation’s premier platforms for international affairs. This series puts you in the room with the global leaders\, visionaries\, and inspiring voices that are changing our world. \nToday\, over 50% of the world’s population is currently under the age of 30. Nearly 90% of that number are living in emerging and developing economies\, particularly in the Middle East and Africa. The 21st century will be defined by how well these young leaders navigate climate change\, economic uncertainty\, civic participation\, and huge cultural shifts in the face of increased globalization. \nFortunately\, youth leadership is on the rise worldwide. From the Arab Spring to the Parkland students ‘March for Our Lives’ to the global fight for climate justice\, today’s youth are not waiting for permission to make an impact on an international scale.  They are shifting what it means to organize within their communities and are guiding the world towards real social change. Join us at the Newmark Theatre as we highlight “Future Leaders\, Global Voices\,” spotlighting powerful youth-lead movements and the initiatives working to empower tomorrow’s global leaders. \nIndividual speaker tickets ($20–$175) are on sale now! \nSpeaker Line-Up: \n\nJulian Castro – Sunday\, March 3\, 2019\nJaha Dukureh – Tuesday\, May 14\, 2019\nFarah Pandith – Wednesday\, May 29\, 2019\nErica Fernandez – Sunday\, June 23\, 2019\n\nErica Fernandez—Saving the Environment: My Immigrant and Activist Journey \nEnvironmental activist Erica Fernandez immigrated with her family from Michoacán\, Mexico to California when she was 10 years old. Fighting for climate and environmental justice\, Fernandez won her first major battle at 17\, when she helped defeat a proposed controversial natural-gas pipeline running through her community. Still in her 20s\, Fernandez is a seasoned community organizer and advocate\, receiving numerous awards including the Brower Youth Award\, the Gates Millennium Scholarship\, and the Jane Goodall Global Leadership Award\, among others. Currently Director of Organizing at the Community Water Center in the Central Valley of California\, Fernandez speaks across the U.S. and internationally on organizing and leveraging community-driven solutions for environmental equity.

US) has its latest and most pivotal court date yet\, right here in our city.\n\n\nRSVP here!\n\n\nOn June 4\, they will have a hearing before the 9th Circuit Court here in Portland to rule on two issues:\n\n\nWhether the case is constitutional\, and should thus be heard by the supreme court\, and;\nWhether the plaintiffs’ injunction to stop all new fossil fuel infrastructure projects will be accepted. (This injunction would stop all fossil fuel expansion operations in the US until the end of the trial!!)\n\n\n\nThis is a BIG DEAL!!\nWe need to show the judges\, the politicians\, and the world\, that we support these young people and that this case must go forward! This will be a giant movement moment for the whole world\, happening right here in our city. 1\,000 people will be in attendance. Will you be one of them?

SUMMARY:Ideas Matter: History & the Shaping of U.S. Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:Since its inception\, the United States has been a self-consciously ideological project. The nation was conceived as a revolutionary republic in a world of monarchies\, and its leadership has continuously struggled to uphold its ideals while maintaining safety in a complex and capricious world. \nThis panel brings together three top Oregon scholars to tackle influential ideologies in war and peace\, isolationism and internationalism\, immigration and border control\, nationalism\, free trade\, and protectionism. These presentations culminate in a multiday conference at Oregon State University on Ideologies and U.S. Foreign Policy\, bringing the scholars’ cutting-edge insights to the public and exploring some of the most important ideas that have shaped the past\, present\, and future of U.S. foreign relations. \nRead more here.
