SUMMARY:COVID COMPLEXITIES – A GLOBAL TOWN HALL
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 has touched every part of the world but its effects and the reaction of different countries has been uneven. In an interconnected world we need to understand the pandemic’s impact beyond our borders. Importantly\, the progress toward a COVID-19 vaccine and therapeutic treatments is a global pursuit. There are\, as well\, already no shortage of changes made and those to come in reaction to the global catastrophe – in our communities\, technology\, health and science\, government performance\, elections\, the global economy and our lifestyles. \nA group of World Affairs Councils – nationwide\, independent\, nonpartisan educational organizations – is joining together with an international network of journalists and specialists to organize conversations over the course of two evenings in early September. The goal is to help Americans understand the impact of the pandemic in an interactive program open to all. \nWe invite you to join this unique partnership to inform and inspire Americans to know more about COVID-19’s impact around the world\, the race for a vaccine and how the vaccine has changed the world. \nOn September 2nd and 3rd journalists\, physicians\, researchers\, NGO officials and others will come together to discuss the global impact of COVID-19 and the pursuit of a vaccine. \nThe program is brought to the public in partnership with many of the nationwide networks of World Affairs Councils and an international network of journalists. \nRegister for this event here.

SUMMARY:We Protest: Fighting For What We Believe In
DESCRIPTION:In her newly published book\, We Protest: Fighting For What We Believe In\, photojournalist Tish Lampert captures the spirit of the heroes and ordinary citizens on their activist journey to defend their American values during the most conflicted era in our recent history. Lampert boldly charts the chronology of social-change movements that have dominated the headlines over the past several years: the fight for women’s rights and gender equality\, immigration rights\, civil liberties\, gun violence\, and the environment. Lampert takes us to the front lines of activism\, where she has documented each protest and their respective leaders\, as well as the legions of ordinary Americans standing together to protect the values of our great nation. \nIn recent months the eyes of the nation and the world have been on Portland as citizens have been demonstrating for over 70 days to protest systemic racism\, police brutality\, and support larger cause of Black Lives Matter. How do we put this moment in perspective and understand Portland’s story in the larger arc of activism? \nJoin us for a rich discussion on protest\, present and past\, with photojournalist Tish Lampert\, Adrienne Belafonte Biesemeyer\, activist and Executive Director of the Anir Foundation\, and Portland’s Eric K. Ward\, Executive Director of Western States Center. Also featuring a special video introduction from Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist David K. Shipler. \nCosponsored with the World Affairs Councils of America.  \nRead More & Register

SUMMARY:Webcast: Oregon's Forests and the Fight Against Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Forests are among the largest stores of living carbon on the planet\, and it turns out that the forests of western Oregon have a higher carbon density than almost any other forest type in the world. Unfortunately\, the destruction and mismanagement of these forests over the past century has transferred massive amounts of stored carbon to the atmosphere\, which has contributed significantly to the warming of the planet. \nWe can’t change the past\, but the policy choices we make today will either continue to make forests a part of the climate problem\, or ensure that they are part of the solution. \nJoin Felice Kelly\, co-lead of our Forest Defense team\, to learn about Climate\, Carbon\, and Oregon’s Forests\, and what we can do about it. \nDid you know that the State of Oregon owns and manages almost a million acres of public forestland? Oregon’s “State Forests” can play a major role in fighting climate change – both by sequestering large amounts of carbon\, and by mitigating the impacts of climate change – if the state shifts the management of these public lands to respond to the climate crisis. \nJoin us on Wednesday to hear about efforts to protect state-owned old-growth forests and transition the management of our State Forests towards more climate-smart forestry. Two community organizers from different corners of the state will be presenting\, and we’ll have for a Q&A afterwards. Hope you can join! \nREGISTER HERE. \nIMPORTANT: This presentation has a two-part registation process. If you do not complete the second step\, you will not receive information on accessing this presentation.

SUMMARY:ACTION FOR CLIMATE EMPOWERMENT: BUILDING A U.S. NATIONAL PLAN
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a series of dialogues to develop an Action for Climate Empowerment: Building a U.S. National Strategic Planning Framework. \n“Let’s get serious. We need more public engagement. We need more awareness. We need more accountability for those in public life who are making these decisions. … That’s really how simple it really is right now. … So\, my friends\, the component of ACE that is awareness and engagement is key to winning this fight.” \n— John Kerry \nUnder guidance from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Article 6\, nations are encouraged to develop their strategic plans to build public engagement\, education\, and participation in finding and implementing climate solutions. These actions\, referenced in Article 6 are more broadly known  as “Action for Climate Empowerment” (ACE). In the absence of an ACE strategic planning initiative by the U.S. federal government\, members of the nation’s ACE community who have deep experience in climate change  are advancing this important work by building a strategic planning framework to start the process. \nWe invite you to join your peers from across the wide range of ACE-relevant fields for dialogs that will inform the building of the strategic planning framework. The resulting framework\, which you and other experts will have the opportunity to review\, is intended to guide development of an ACE National Strategic Plan in 2021 as part of the United States’ next Nationally Determined Contribution to the Paris Climate Agreement. The plan will establish priorities for national policy and funding and foster productive collaborations on the regional\, national\, and international levels. When completed\, this process will yield the first ACE Strategic Plan produced by any major emitting country. \nClick HERE to register for this free event!

This agenda will support the theme of this year’s High-level Political Forum which is “Accelerated action and transformative pathways: realising the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development”. The discussion will seek to provide insight on how Covid-19 will affect the sector and what new ideas are being considered that can enable higher education to enable radical change and regeneration. In addition to this discussion\, there will be a special HESI Members roundtable that will be held on 9 July to reflect on this discussion and encourage actionable next steps.\n\n\nEvent Objectives:\n\nReflect on where we are: Through the discussion\, to understand the impact of COVID-19 on Higher Education so we know “where we are”;\nExplore where we want to get to: Explore new ideas as to how we can regenerate\, renew and revitalise Higher Education and explore different pathway that would offer ideas on how to Redesign Higher & Further Education for the Future;\nBe inspired\, while considering access and equity\, to build collective intent: Be inspired by new\, propositional fresh thinking as to what we can achieve collectively while also ensuring that we consider inclusion and equity at all levels\, everywhere.\n\nREGISTRATION DEADLINE JULY 3.  More information/register here \nLearn more about HESI and consider helping it reach its full potential.  Share with your networks as appropriate.\n\n\nDocumentation:\n\nConcept and programme\n\n\nFlyer: Higher Education Sustainability Initiative 2020

SUMMARY:American Experience: The Vote
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the centennial of women’s suffrage with NEH-supported films and online resources \nWASHINGTON\, D.C. (July 2\, 2020) — The ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in August of 1920 was the culmination of a lengthy and hard-won struggle fought by legions of American women who organized\, campaigned\, marched\, and engaged in civil disobedience to achieve the goal of women’s suffrage. \nPremiering on PBS American Experience on July 6\, The Vote\, a two-part documentary funded by a $350\,000 grant to City Lore from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)\, tells the story of the final decade of the transformative cultural and political movement that resulted in the largest expansion of voting rights in U.S. history. Directed and produced by Michelle Ferrari\, the film examines the major turning points within the women’s suffrage movement between 1909 to 1920\, the debates among its leaders about the best tactics for effecting social and political change\, the unsung leaders of the movement\, and the controversies over gender roles and race that divided the nation. \nThe Vote is one of several NEH-supported projects focused on women’s history and 100 years of women’s suffrage. \nOn July 10\, PBS American Masters will also premiere the documentary Unladylike2020\, on female trailblazers in politics and civil rights. Directed and produced by Charlotte Mangin\, this special one-hour broadcast is part of an NEH-funded multimedia series that illuminates the inspiring stories of little-known American heroines. Unladylike2020 spotlights 26 American changemakers through 26 short online documentaries and includes biographies of women such as Bessie Coleman\, the first African American to earn an international pilot’s license; Susan La Flesche Picotte\, the first Native American physician who also founded a hospital on the Omaha Reservation; Jeanette Rankin\, the first woman elected to the U.S. Congress; and Gertrude Ederle\, the first woman to swim across the English Channel.

SUMMARY:WorldOregon presents Nicholas Kristof
DESCRIPTION:Kristof\, an Oregon native\, reflects on the risks ahead for the U.S. and its standing as global leader. Should we aim to have countries fear us or admire us? Do we maximize our competitiveness through trade policy abroad or through educational investments at home? Is U.S. leadership passing to China\, India and Europe\, and if so how can we recover the mantle? What lessons are there from the rest of the world that America can learn from?

SUMMARY:World Localization Day: Local Future
DESCRIPTION:Be part of this progressive\, inspirational and life-affirming movement for change! \nFor decades\, the localization movement has been emerging at the\ngrassroots on every continent\, under the radar of the mainstream media\nand with virtually no support from government. People have been\nreweaving the fabric of place-based economies that are human-scale and\nhuman-paced: economies that can serve as cornerstones for community\nand personal wellbeing. By shortening the link between production and\nconsumption\, they have reconnected both to each other and to the Earth.\nThis is the economics of happiness. \nLocalization is about \nsupporting local shops\, local farms and local businesses. It’s about keeping money within the community. It’s about investing in the place where you live– financially\, emotionally\,practically. It’s about building on the resources of the area (both human\nand natural) and living with ecological limits. It’s about saying no to giant unaccountable corporations. And it’s about pressing for political change: to move taxes\, subsidies and regulations away from supporting a few global monopolies towards a multitude of place-based businesses and industries. \nAfter COVID-19\, we can return to stressful disconnected lives and climate catastrophe\, or we can slow down\, scale down and rebuild our connections to each other and to the Earth. \n\n\nThis pre-recorded event will include \n\n\n\n\n\nTalks\nDiscussion\nMusic\nCelebrity Endorsements\nAnimations\nPolitical humour\nQ&A forum\nLive chat\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here for this World Localization Day! \nDonations greatly appreciated. \n
