SUMMARY:How to be an Antiracist
DESCRIPTION:When the first Black president headed into the White House\, Americans were imagining their nation as colorblind and went so far as to call it post-racial. With the arrival of Donald Trump\, many people are awakening and seeing racial reality for the first time. With opened minds\, people are actively trying to understand racism. In this deeply personal and empowering lecture\, Kendi shifts the discussion from how not to be racist\, to how to be an antiracist. He shares his own racist ideas and how he overcame them. He provides direction to people and institutions who want more than just band-aid programs\, but actual antiracist action that builds an antiracist America. \nIbram X. Kendi is Professor of History and International Relations and the Founding Director of the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University. He is a frequent public speaker who speaks with great expertise and compassion about the findings of his book and how they can fit into the national conversation on racial and social justice. \nKendi has received research fellowships\, grants\, and visiting appointments from a variety of universities\, foundations\, professional associations\, and libraries\, including the American Historical Association\, Library of Congress\, National Academy of Education\, Spencer Foundation\, Lyndon B. Johnson Library & Museum\, Rutgers Center for Historical Analysis\, Brown University\, Princeton University\, Duke University\, University of Chicago\, and UCLA. Most recently\, he was named a 2019 Guggenheim Fellow for his work. \nThe Racial Equity Speaker series consists of events throughout the year with speakers highlighting national and regional racial equity issues. \nThank you to our partners\, Casey Family Programs\, Grantmakers of Oregon and Southwest Washington\, and Portland Community College Foundation.

SUMMARY:The History of Garden Tools - Seth Pauley\, owner of Red Pig Hang-Forged Garden Tools
DESCRIPTION:The story of garden tools is the story of humanity. Although tools have evolved from sticks and stones to bone and wood\, to a wide range of modern plastics and metals\, the work we do with the tools hasn’t changed much. Seth Pauley of Red Pig Garden Tools will talk about the history of garden tools and how that history informs what tools we use today. He will also cover how to choose the right tool for the job\, offer tips for digging and weeding more efficiently in the garden\, and answer questions. The audience will be challenged by Seth’s intriguing collection of old and unique tools - what on earth did they use that for?  The artisans at Red Pig Tools are the only blacksmiths in the United States specialized in hand forged garden tools for home gardeners\, nurserymen\, landscapers\, and farmers. Seth himself is a craftsperson\, writer\, and student of history as well as a blacksmith. With a life-long devotion to the creative arts\, from creative writing to ceramics to wood-working and now blacksmithing\, Seth’s interest in history and in learning obscure crafts has enabled him to learn his artistry through hands-on experience and direct contact with highly skilled and often renowned mentors. \n  \nAll lectures will take place in the Manor House at Leach Botanical Garden. \n6704 SE 122nd Ave.\, Portland OR 97236. Use Creekside Parking lot. \nDoors open at 6:00 pm for refreshments and strolling in the Garden. Lectures begin at 7:00 pm. \nNote. Although the link on Yapsody says PayPal\, you don’t need a PayPal account. After you click on Paypal\, you have the option to pay with a credit card. \nPlease contact the Education Coordinator for more information: 503-823-1671 or jvrilakas@leachgarden.org \nTHANK YOU TO PORTLAND NURSERY\, OUR PRESENTING SPONSOR

SUMMARY:Exploitation and Empathy: Navigating the Dynamics between Donors\, Staff\, and Program Participants
DESCRIPTION:Since the term “poverty porn” first appeared in 1981\, much has been said about the exploitation of human suffering to inspire charitable giving. Yet four decades later\, many organizations still struggle to communicate their impact in a way that authentically represents the issue and preserves the dignity of those affected by it. How do we portray our program participants as their own agents of change\, while admitting that they also need our help? How do we emotionally connect funders to our clients\, without simplifying their challenges or minimizing cultural differences? \nIn a refreshing take on this provocative issue\, Caliopy Glaros of Philanthropy without Borders invites attendees to move beyond lexicon and imagery\, to embrace methods that both challenge assumptions and inspire empathy. Drawing from her experience in international donor travel as well as research from social psychology\, she provides an innovative approach to building capacity for empathy while motivating others to action. \nAttendees will leave this session with a new means of evaluating interactions between donors\, staff\, and program participants\, as well as tools they can begin implementing right away.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister below to reserve your seat at this fantastic event!

SUMMARY:Peace Memorial Park Clean-Up
DESCRIPTION:This is a great way to become involved in a community beautification project here in the Lloyd neighborhood. Thousands of people walk and ride their bikes by this space every day and we aim to make it a place where people\, and pollinators\, can take a moment to enjoy the beauty of Portland. This space will enhance the original message of peace that Veterans For Peace created in the space\, and include a pollinator garden\, with information on their importance to our ecosystem. Soon we will be showcasing 3 park redesign options to gather public input on what the final design should be. Project partner PLACE Studios is providing the design alternatives and we will send information for when and where the meeting will be held. For now please join us\, and the goats\, this Saturday to keep the park looking good!

SUMMARY:2019 Walk with Refugees & Immigrants
DESCRIPTION:The third annual Walk with Refugees & Immigrants is presented by PP&R’s Parks for New Portlanders program in conjunction with the Portland Bureau of Transportation’s Sunday Parkways\, local nonprofits and refugee and immigrant organizations\, and local elected leaders. The event celebrates the unique experiences of Portlanders of all ages and backgrounds. An estimated 5\,000 people took part in the Walk in 2018. \n“This event is a highlight of our Parks for New Portlanders program\,” says Portland Parks Commissioner Nick Fish. “We’re proud to welcome people of all backgrounds to Portland.” \nAll are welcome to take part\, to support and celebrate with everyone who calls the Rose City home. Afterwards enjoy delicious food\, multicultural music\, and family fun at Knott Park. \nFor more information about the Walk in English and several other languages\, please visit the event web page. \n“Portland Parks & Recreation welcomes everyone to our park places and spaces\,” says  Director Adena Long. “It doesn’t matter if you’ve been in the City for a week – or your entire life. We are proud to celebrate Portland’s newcomers and help show them they are welcomed\, appreciated\, and to introduce everyone to the wonders of Portland Parks & Recreation.” \n“Imagine never having had a country or community of your own – until arriving in Portland”\, says SB Langh\, a refugee from Southeast Asia. “I want to express my sincerest appreciation to Oregonians in general and to Portlanders in particular for their acceptance and support in all areas of our lives. The Walk with Refugees & Immigrants event shows us the love and care our neighbors have for the city’s newcomers.” \n\nAbout the Parks for New Portlanders program \nThe Parks for New Portlanders (PNP) program is part of Portland Parks & Recreation. The goal is to provide opportunities for recent immigrants and refugees to connect with the broader Portland community. PNP works with community partners and City leaders to design and implement culturally relevant programs. PNP strives to ensure that City services and spaces are welcoming and accessible to communities of color\, new immigrants\, and refugees. \nWith one in five Portlanders now foreign-born\, addressing the needs of this new and diverse population is crucial as they transition to Portland’s community. The PNP program hosts sporting events like Portland World Soccer in the summer and the Intercultural Basketball Tournament in the fall.
