DESCRIPTION:Celeste Searles Mazzacano\, PhD \nLearn about some of the fascinating and intricate ways in which plants and insects have evolved to affect each other’s traits and behaviors\, including defensive arms races\, attraction to sweet rewards\, and trickery and death traps. \nCeleste Searles Mazzacano is the Owner and Principal Scientist at CASM Environmental LLC\, where her work focuses on insects\, freshwater mussels\, and other invertebrates. She has a B.S. in Genetics & Cell Biology and a Ph.D. in Entomology from the University of Minnesota. Her research and teaching has taken her from river bottoms to tree canopies and from universities to fish & wildlife agencies\, non-profits\, and independent consulting as she investigates and preserves insect species\, characterizes their impacts on habitats\, and develops management plans that protect the overall ecosystem. As an educator\, she strives to impart her almost excessive enthusiasm about insects to others and engender a greater awareness and appreciation of their functions. \n  \nAll lectures will take place in the Manor House at Leach Botanical Garden \n6704 SE 122nd Ave.\, Portland\, OR  97236. Why is this happening\, and what can we do? \nJoin international conservationists for a night about the Amazon. Maria Teresa Quispe from Venezuela\, Pacho von Hildebrant from Colombia\, and Matt Clark from Portland will present on the North Amazonian Alliance and their collective work to protect the largest intact tropical forest in the world. \nWhere:  Portland State University\, Smith Memorial Student Union\, Vanport Room 338 (Third Floor) \nMaría Teresa Quispe is the Managing Director of Wataniba\, a non-profit focused on indigenous land rights as a way to address economic inequality and deforestation in the Venezuelan Amazon. \nFrancis Von Hildebrand is the Executive Director of GAIA Amazonas\, a non-profit working with the indigenous nationalities of the southeastern Colombian Amazon on land rights\, autonomous local governance\, and preservation of traditional knowledge systems. \nMatt Clark is the CEO of Nature and Culture International\, a non-profit dedicated to conserving biological and cultural diversity in Latin America through the creation and management of protected areas.

She previously led Medical Teams’ community health program for Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazaar\, Bangladesh as an implementing partner of UNHCR and UNICEF. \nSukanya is on the Norwegian Refugee Council’s standby roster as a Humanitarian Communications Expert and worked with International Blue Crescent Relief & Development Foundation in Turkey for the Syrian refugee response. Prior to her humanitarian career\, Sukanya spent three+ years as a Media Production Manager in London\, U.K. She earned her master’s degree in Media Production and her PhD in Refugee and Communications Studies at Birmingham City University (U.K.). \nSukanya is dedicated to promoting community empowerment and linking refugees to critical health care information and services. With the arrival of Donald Trump\, many people are awakening and seeing racial reality for the first time. With opened minds\, people are actively trying to understand racism. In this deeply personal and empowering lecture\, Kendi shifts the discussion from how not to be racist\, to how to be an antiracist. He shares his own racist ideas and how he overcame them. He provides direction to people and institutions who want more than just band-aid programs\, but actual antiracist action that builds an antiracist America. \nIbram X. Kendi is Professor of History and International Relations and the Founding Director of the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University. He is a frequent public speaker who speaks with great expertise and compassion about the findings of his book and how they can fit into the national conversation on racial and social justice. \nKendi has received research fellowships\, grants\, and visiting appointments from a variety of universities\, foundations\, professional associations\, and libraries\, including the American Historical Association\, Library of Congress\, National Academy of Education\, Spencer Foundation\, Lyndon B. Johnson Library & Museum\, Rutgers Center for Historical Analysis\, Brown University\, Princeton University\, Duke University\, University of Chicago\, and UCLA. Seth Pauley of Red Pig Garden Tools will talk about the history of garden tools and how that history informs what tools we use today. He will also cover how to choose the right tool for the job\, offer tips for digging and weeding more efficiently in the garden\, and answer questions. The audience will be challenged by Seth’s intriguing collection of old and unique tools ­- what on earth did they use that for?  The artisans at Red Pig Tools are the only blacksmiths in the United States specialized in hand forged garden tools for home gardeners\, nurserymen\, landscapers\, and farmers. Seth himself is a craftsperson\, writer\, and student of history as well as a blacksmith. DESCRIPTION:The Exchange is a multicultural day market that brings together food\, art\, and performances from a wide spectrum of our community. We want to highlight and make space to support local vendors of color and their respective crafts. Our mission is to make meaningful connections across perceived differences to create more vibrant communities. \nAre there any fees to participate as a guest or vendor? \nNo\, this event is FREE for all! We want to encourage people to support their local vendors by purchasing from them. \nAre there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event? \nNo\, there isn’t a minimum age requirement\, this is an ALL AGES event. \nWhat are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event? \nThere are several bus routes that are within walking distance from our location including 75\, 14\, 15\, 2\, and 20.\nWe also have limited on-site bike parking. \nIf you are driving: \nThere is street parking but predict that it will be difficult to find one. We highly encourage taking public transportation or biking. If you do choose to drive consider carpooling! \nHow can I contact the organizer with any questions? \nYes\, for this event we have two organizers. DESCRIPTION:Join us in support of SE Uplift to prepare their space for a market on the following day – the Exchange\, a multicultural market place that highlights Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color (BIPOC). \nOur goals for the day are to do ecological landscaping – the land is full of natives and rain gardens that need tending\, while we also spruce up a parking lot where the market will pop up. \nSnacks and tools provided\, but feel free to bring your favorite pruners!
