SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: Ghost Net Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Ghost Net Landscape is an interactive art installation and performance\, in which Emily Miller collaborates with visitors to transform piles of “ghost net” fishing rope waste into sculptural\, tactile basket forms. The project involves three major components: a massive pile of ghost net rescued from our coastline\, a sewing machine workstation where Emily will create the sculptures during the exhibit\, and a time-lapse video documenting the process. \nAfter four years working with ghost net\, this project translates Emily’s experience into a gallery setting\, creating a powerful sculptural presence from one of the most abundant and dangerous sources of ocean trash. The bright colors\, organic forms\, and tactile textures of each sculpture express the continued allure of plastic despite its status as hazardous marine waste.

SUMMARY:Ghost Net Landscape by Emily Miller
DESCRIPTION:“Ghost Net Landscape” by Emily Miller opens October 7th at the Kathrin Cawein Gallery.  The collaborative exhibit will feature Emily Miller’s finished sculptures created from plastic marine debris (“ghost net”) as well as over 1\,000 pounds of unprocessed fishing rope and net.  \nFor four weeks\, Emily will be working in the gallery alongside visitors\, processing the materials and creating finished sculptures. Artists and visitors of any artistic ability are encouraged to visit the space\, experiment with the material\, and create their own pieces. At the end of the exhibit\, visitors are encouraged to take materials home — continuing the idea of sustainable use of reclaimed materials. \nThe sculptures\, or baskets\, begin as fishing rope washed ashore on the beaches of Maine\, Oregon\, and Kauai. Cleaned\, unraveled\, and restitched\, the colorful rope becomes a collection of unique baskets accented with local stones and other treasures.  \nThe Kathrin Cawein Gallery is located in Scott Hall at Pacific University\, 2043 College Way\, Forest Grove\, Oregon. The gallery is open Monday-Friday\, from 1-5 PM\, through October 31st. An opening reception will be held Monday\, October 7th from 4-6 PM; the closing reception will be held Tuesday\, October 29th from 4-6 PM. \nIn partnership with Washington County Open Studios\, the gallery is also open Saturday\, October 19th and Sunday\, October 20th from 11-5 PM.  \nJoin Artist Emily Miller to make a visible difference in marine conservation\, transforming dangerous marine waste into objects of value.   \nThe Ghost Net Landscape exhibit will be a collaborative gallery space in partnership with CALC\, Eden Acres\, Pacific University\, SOLVE Oregon\, Oregon State Parks\, Surfrider Kauai\, Port of Grays Harbor\, and Ocean Gold Seafood. The exhibit is funded in part by the Regional Arts & Culture Council.

SUMMARY:Campus Sustainability Month

These events include teach-ins\, sustainability pledge drives\, zero-energy concerts\, waste audits\, green sporting events\, letter writing campaigns\, service projects and much more! \nThe goal of CSM is to raise the visibility of campus sustainability and provide campus sustainability advocates with a platform through which to deepen campus engagement around sustainability. It provides an excellent opportunity to recruit new leaders and set goals for the rest of the year. It serves as a complement to Earth Day\, which is held April 22 each year\, and is often a time for celebration and recognition of the good work that took place over the course of the academic year. \n\n\n\n\nHow You Can Participate\n\nWatch Past Campus Sustainability Month Webinars –  Find tool\, tips\, tactics and ideas that you can bring to your institution to celebrate Campus Sustainability Month by watching one of the past webinars.\nDevelop a schedule of events for your campus – Campus Sustainability Month activities can include announcements of new sustainability commitments\, award ceremonies\, tree plantings\, teach-ins\, conferences\, nature walks\, green product showcases\, sustainability competitions\, power plant tours or information fairs. There are several engagement opportunities in October that you may wish to incorporate in your plans\, including:\n\nGlobal Bird Rescue (Sept. 30-Oct. 6)\nProject Green Challenge (Oct. 1-30)\nEnergy Efficiency Day (Oct. 2)\nPeople’s EcoChallenge (Oct. 2-23)\nGlobal Climate Change Week (Oct. 14-20)\nWorld Food Day (Oct. 16)\n2019 AASHE Conference & Expo (Oct. 27-30)\n\n\nShare your plans and promote Campus Sustainability Month – Tell us what you have planned for CSM and use #CampusSustainabilityMonth to share your successes via Facebook\, Twitter and Instagram. Use our promotional toolkit to get the word out about your institution’s participation.\nMovie Screening Opportunity – AASHE and Bullfrog Films are offering institutions the opportunity to screen one of four movies for the discounted rate of $85 (normally $100+) or to purchase the DVD with a 15 percent discount. Take advantage of this opportunity!

SUMMARY:Climate Strike Oregon
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this year\, Greta Thunberg and 46 other youth activists issued a call to everyone around the globe to join them in a massive climate strike on September 20th. The Climate Strike will kick-off a week of mass\, escalated actions between Sept 20-28. \nSchool strikers are calling on everyone ― young people\, parents\, workers\, and all concerned people ― to join a massive climate strike on September 20th to demand an end to the age of fossil fuels. \nOur house is on fire — let’s act like it. We demand climate justice for everyone. \nThis week is our chance to show the politicians and fossil fuel billionaires that the real power lies with the people. This week is your chance to join the climate justice movement\, and put a stop to business as usual. \nIn every state and every city people are stepping out their normal routines for a day or a week by taking action locally\, whether that means sitting in at city halls\, shutting down fossil fuel infrastructure\, or marching to the governor’s office. It’s going to take all of us to change everything and there’s no better time to join us. \nThe week kicks off with the massive Sept 20th Global Climate Strike\, followed by a week of actions\, trainings\, events\, orientations\, art builds\, and more.

SUMMARY:How to be an Antiracist
DESCRIPTION:When the first Black president headed into the White House\, Americans were imagining their nation as colorblind and went so far as to call it post-racial. With the arrival of Donald Trump\, many people are awakening and seeing racial reality for the first time. With opened minds\, people are actively trying to understand racism. In this deeply personal and empowering lecture\, Kendi shifts the discussion from how not to be racist\, to how to be an antiracist. He shares his own racist ideas and how he overcame them. He provides direction to people and institutions who want more than just band-aid programs\, but actual antiracist action that builds an antiracist America. \nIbram X. Kendi is Professor of History and International Relations and the Founding Director of the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University. He is a frequent public speaker who speaks with great expertise and compassion about the findings of his book and how they can fit into the national conversation on racial and social justice. \nKendi has received research fellowships\, grants\, and visiting appointments from a variety of universities\, foundations\, professional associations\, and libraries\, including the American Historical Association\, Library of Congress\, National Academy of Education\, Spencer Foundation\, Lyndon B. Johnson Library & Museum\, Rutgers Center for Historical Analysis\, Brown University\, Princeton University\, Duke University\, University of Chicago\, and UCLA. Most recently\, he was named a 2019 Guggenheim Fellow for his work. \nThe Racial Equity Speaker series consists of events throughout the year with speakers highlighting national and regional racial equity issues. \nThank you to our partners\, Casey Family Programs\, Grantmakers of Oregon and Southwest Washington\, and Portland Community College Foundation.
