SUMMARY:Ghost Net Landscape by Emily Miller
DESCRIPTION:“Ghost Net Landscape” by Emily Miller opens October 7th at the Kathrin Cawein Gallery.  The collaborative exhibit will feature Emily Miller’s finished sculptures created from plastic marine debris (“ghost net”) as well as over 1\,000 pounds of unprocessed fishing rope and net.  \nFor four weeks\, Emily will be working in the gallery alongside visitors\, processing the materials and creating finished sculptures. Artists and visitors of any artistic ability are encouraged to visit the space\, experiment with the material\, and create their own pieces. At the end of the exhibit\, visitors are encouraged to take materials home — continuing the idea of sustainable use of reclaimed materials. \nThe sculptures\, or baskets\, begin as fishing rope washed ashore on the beaches of Maine\, Oregon\, and Kauai. Cleaned\, unraveled\, and restitched\, the colorful rope becomes a collection of unique baskets accented with local stones and other treasures.  \nThe Kathrin Cawein Gallery is located in Scott Hall at Pacific University\, 2043 College Way\, Forest Grove\, Oregon. The gallery is open Monday-Friday\, from 1-5 PM\, through October 31st. An opening reception will be held Monday\, October 7th from 4-6 PM; the closing reception will be held Tuesday\, October 29th from 4-6 PM. \nIn partnership with Washington County Open Studios\, the gallery is also open Saturday\, October 19th and Sunday\, October 20th from 11-5 PM.  \nJoin Artist Emily Miller to make a visible difference in marine conservation\, transforming dangerous marine waste into objects of value.   \nThe Ghost Net Landscape exhibit will be a collaborative gallery space in partnership with CALC\, Eden Acres\, Pacific University\, SOLVE Oregon\, Oregon State Parks\, Surfrider Kauai\, Port of Grays Harbor\, and Ocean Gold Seafood. The exhibit is funded in part by the Regional Arts & Culture Council.

SUMMARY:Global Climate Change Week
DESCRIPTION:Climate change poses a major threat to sustainable development. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\, ‘Poverty and disadvantage are expected to increase in some populations as global warming increases; limiting global warming to 1.5°C\, compared with 2°C\, could reduce the number of people both exposed to climate-related risks and susceptible to poverty by up to several hundred million by 2050 (medium confidence)’ (IPCC\, 2018: Summary for Policymakers. In: Global Warming of 1.5°C\,B.5.1.) \n(https://www.ipcc.ch/sr15/chapter/spm/). \nFor this reason\, it is important for everyone concerned about sustainable development to take action on climate change. One way for academic communities in particular to do so is by taking part in Global Climate Change Week (GCCWeek) (http://globalclimatechangeweek.com/)\, an initiative designed to encourage academic communities – including academics\, students\, and non-academic staff at universities – in all disciplines and countries to engage with each other\, their communities\, and policy makers on climate change. \nIn this\, its fifth year GCCWeek will take place on October 14-20. For examples of GCCWeek activities at various universities around the world in recent years see e.g. https://www.bath.ac.uk/announcements/global-climate-change-week-2018/; https://www.facebook.com/pg/AteneoGCCW/events/; https://www.facebook.com/gccwatuow/; and https://www.monash.edu/climateactionweek. \nFor advice on organising GCCWeek at your university see http://globalclimatechangeweek.com/how-to-organise-global-climate-change-week-at-your-university/. \nSo please consider taking part (register your interest now at http://globalclimatechangeweek.com/register-your-interest/ if you would like to take part\, and register an activity later at http://globalclimatechangeweek.com/register-an-activity/ if you organise one.)\, follow us on twitter (https://twitter.com/gccweek)\, and help to spread the word about GCCWeek.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: Ghost Net Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Ghost Net Landscape is an interactive art installation and performance\, in which Emily Miller collaborates with visitors to transform piles of “ghost net” fishing rope waste into sculptural\, tactile basket forms. The project involves three major components: a massive pile of ghost net rescued from our coastline\, a sewing machine workstation where Emily will create the sculptures during the exhibit\, and a time-lapse video documenting the process. \nAfter four years working with ghost net\, this project translates Emily’s experience into a gallery setting\, creating a powerful sculptural presence from one of the most abundant and dangerous sources of ocean trash. The bright colors\, organic forms\, and tactile textures of each sculpture express the continued allure of plastic despite its status as hazardous marine waste.

SUMMARY:Climate Strike Oregon
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this year\, Greta Thunberg and 46 other youth activists issued a call to everyone around the globe to join them in a massive climate strike on September 20th. The Climate Strike will kick-off a week of mass\, escalated actions between Sept 20-28. \nSchool strikers are calling on everyone ― young people\, parents\, workers\, and all concerned people ― to join a massive climate strike on September 20th to demand an end to the age of fossil fuels. \nOur house is on fire — let’s act like it. We demand climate justice for everyone. \nThis week is our chance to show the politicians and fossil fuel billionaires that the real power lies with the people. This week is your chance to join the climate justice movement\, and put a stop to business as usual. \nIn every state and every city people are stepping out their normal routines for a day or a week by taking action locally\, whether that means sitting in at city halls\, shutting down fossil fuel infrastructure\, or marching to the governor’s office. It’s going to take all of us to change everything and there’s no better time to join us. \nThe week kicks off with the massive Sept 20th Global Climate Strike\, followed by a week of actions\, trainings\, events\, orientations\, art builds\, and more.

SUMMARY:NATURE FOR ALL CAMPAIGN LAUNCH
DESCRIPTION:This November\, voters throughout our region will have the opportunity to continue protecting rivers and wetlands\, habitat and open space\, as well as to invest in parks\, by renewing the Nature for All bond. Please join us as we launch the campaign to pass this exciting and important measure on Thursday\, Sept. 19\, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Cully Park in Northeast Portland. \nThe Nature for All campaign launch will center community\, diversity and families across the region with fun interactive activities\, healthy and delicious snacks\, and inspiring speakers representing our communities. Our mission is to gather friends\, neighbors\, community partners and other stakeholders to celebrate the efforts to create Measure 26-203 — and to look ahead to winning the campaign come November. \nWe also need volunteers the day of the launch to greet people and do a bit of crowd canvassing with the goal of recruiting campaign volunteers. If you’re interested\, please sign up here. \nThe Nature for All campaign has a critical opportunity to put community first to build lasting relationships that span beyond Election Day. We recognize that it’s not just about winning\, it’s about the impact of meaningful conversations with voters about why access to parks and green spaces contributes to the quality of life we’ve come to cherish across our region. Measure 26-203 was informed by communities of color to deliberately make key investments that ensure historically underserved areas have access to parks and nature.  \nOur coalition is made up of dozens of organizations\, including Audubon Society of Portland\, Verde\, Urban Greenspaces Institute\, 1000 Friends of Oregon\, AFSCME 3580\, The Nature Conservancy\, East County Rising\, Depave and The Trust for Public Land. To join these incredible organizations in the effort to pass the Nature for All bond\, endorse today! Email Campaign Manager Elisabeth Swarttouw at elisabeths@strategies360.com to get started. \nPlease share this invitation widely with your family\, friends and colleagues. Together\, let’s set the stage for sustained and equitable support for our parks and natural areas in the years to come. RSVP to join us!
