DESCRIPTION:“Ghost Net Landscape” by Emily Miller opens October 7th at the Kathrin Cawein Gallery.  The collaborative exhibit will feature Emily Miller’s finished sculptures created from plastic marine debris (“ghost net”) as well as over 1\,000 pounds of unprocessed fishing rope and net.  \nFor four weeks\, Emily will be working in the gallery alongside visitors\, processing the materials and creating finished sculptures. Artists and visitors of any artistic ability are encouraged to visit the space\, experiment with the material\, and create their own pieces. At the end of the exhibit\, visitors are encouraged to take materials home — continuing the idea of sustainable use of reclaimed materials. \nThe sculptures\, or baskets\, begin as fishing rope washed ashore on the beaches of Maine\, Oregon\, and Kauai. Cleaned\, unraveled\, and restitched\, the colorful rope becomes a collection of unique baskets accented with local stones and other treasures.  \nThe Kathrin Cawein Gallery is located in Scott Hall at Pacific University\, 2043 College Way\, Forest Grove\, Oregon. The gallery is open Monday-Friday\, from 1-5 PM\, through October 31st. DESCRIPTION:“Ghost Net Landscape” by Emily Miller opens October 7th at the Kathrin Cawein Gallery.  The collaborative exhibit will feature Emily Miller’s finished sculptures created from plastic marine debris (“ghost net”) as well as over 1\,000 pounds of unprocessed fishing rope and net.  \nFor four weeks\, Emily will be working in the gallery alongside visitors\, processing the materials and creating finished sculptures. Artists and visitors of any artistic ability are encouraged to visit the space\, experiment with the material\, and create their own pieces. At the end of the exhibit\, visitors are encouraged to take materials home — continuing the idea of sustainable use of reclaimed materials. \nThe sculptures\, or baskets\, begin as fishing rope washed ashore on the beaches of Maine\, Oregon\, and Kauai. Cleaned\, unraveled\, and restitched\, the colorful rope becomes a collection of unique baskets accented with local stones and other treasures.  \nThe Kathrin Cawein Gallery is located in Scott Hall at Pacific University\, 2043 College Way\, Forest Grove\, Oregon. The gallery is open Monday-Friday\, from 1-5 PM\, through October 31st. This concert is Potluck in the Park’s biggest fundraiser of the year. \nFood for the Soul is a concert and fundraiser benefitting Potluck in the Park. Potluck has been serving a free hot meal to anyone in need since 1991. Rain or shine\, 52 weeks a year\, we feed Portland’s needy every Sunday in the North Park blocks near downtown Portland. DESCRIPTION:Climate change poses a major threat to sustainable development. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\, ‘Poverty and disadvantage are expected to increase in some populations as global warming increases; limiting global warming to 1.5°C\, compared with 2°C\, could reduce the number of people both exposed to climate-related risks and susceptible to poverty by up to several hundred million by 2050 (medium confidence)’ (IPCC\, 2018: Summary for Policymakers. In: Global Warming of 1.5°C\,B.5.1.) \n(https://www.ipcc.ch/sr15/chapter/spm/). \nFor this reason\, it is important for everyone concerned about sustainable development to take action on climate change. One way for academic communities in particular to do so is by taking part in Global Climate Change Week (GCCWeek) (http://globalclimatechangeweek.com/)\, an initiative designed to encourage academic communities – including academics\, students\, and non-academic staff at universities – in all disciplines and countries to engage with each other\, their communities\, and policy makers on climate change. \nIn this\, its fifth year GCCWeek will take place on October 14-20. SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: Ghost Net Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Ghost Net Landscape is an interactive art installation and performance\, in which Emily Miller collaborates with visitors to transform piles of “ghost net” fishing rope waste into sculptural\, tactile basket forms. The project involves three major components: a massive pile of ghost net rescued from our coastline\, a sewing machine workstation where Emily will create the sculptures during the exhibit\, and a time-lapse video documenting the process. \nAfter four years working with ghost net\, this project translates Emily’s experience into a gallery setting\, creating a powerful sculptural presence from one of the most abundant and dangerous sources of ocean trash. The bright colors\, organic forms\, and tactile textures of each sculpture express the continued allure of plastic despite its status as hazardous marine waste.

SUMMARY:Ghost Net Landscape by Emily Miller
DESCRIPTION:“Ghost Net Landscape” by Emily Miller opens October 7th at the Kathrin Cawein Gallery.  The collaborative exhibit will feature Emily Miller’s finished sculptures created from plastic marine debris (“ghost net”) as well as over 1\,000 pounds of unprocessed fishing rope and net.  \nFor four weeks\, Emily will be working in the gallery alongside visitors\, processing the materials and creating finished sculptures. Artists and visitors of any artistic ability are encouraged to visit the space\, experiment with the material\, and create their own pieces. At the end of the exhibit\, visitors are encouraged to take materials home — continuing the idea of sustainable use of reclaimed materials. \nThe sculptures\, or baskets\, begin as fishing rope washed ashore on the beaches of Maine\, Oregon\, and Kauai. Cleaned\, unraveled\, and restitched\, the colorful rope becomes a collection of unique baskets accented with local stones and other treasures.  \nThe Kathrin Cawein Gallery is located in Scott Hall at Pacific University\, 2043 College Way\, Forest Grove\, Oregon. The gallery is open Monday-Friday\, from 1-5 PM\, through October 31st. An opening reception will be held Monday\, October 7th from 4-6 PM; the closing reception will be held Tuesday\, October 29th from 4-6 PM. \nIn partnership with Washington County Open Studios\, the gallery is also open Saturday\, October 19th and Sunday\, October 20th from 11-5 PM.  \nJoin Artist Emily Miller to make a visible difference in marine conservation\, transforming dangerous marine waste into objects of value.   \nThe Ghost Net Landscape exhibit will be a collaborative gallery space in partnership with CALC\, Eden Acres\, Pacific University\, SOLVE Oregon\, Oregon State Parks\, Surfrider Kauai\, Port of Grays Harbor\, and Ocean Gold Seafood. The exhibit is funded in part by the Regional Arts & Culture Council.

DESCRIPTION:Held every October\, Campus Sustainability Month is an international celebration of sustainability in higher education. Throughout the month\, colleges and universities organize events on campus and elsewhere to engage and inspire incoming students and other campus stakeholders to become sustainability change agents. These events include teach-ins\, sustainability pledge drives\, zero-energy concerts\, waste audits\, green sporting events\, letter writing campaigns\, service projects and much more! \nThe goal of CSM is to raise the visibility of campus sustainability and provide campus sustainability advocates with a platform through which to deepen campus engagement around sustainability. It provides an excellent opportunity to recruit new leaders and set goals for the rest of the year. It serves as a complement to Earth Day\, which is held April 22 each year\, and is often a time for celebration and recognition of the good work that took place over the course of the academic year. \n\n\n\n\nHow You Can Participate\n\nWatch Past Campus Sustainability Month Webinars –  Find tool\, tips\, tactics and ideas that you can bring to your institution to celebrate Campus Sustainability Month by watching one of the past webinars.\nDevelop a schedule of events for your campus – Campus Sustainability Month activities can include announcements of new sustainability commitments\, award ceremonies\, tree plantings\, teach-ins\, conferences\, nature walks\, green product showcases\, sustainability competitions\, power plant tours or information fairs.
