SUMMARY:Are We Still Fighting Slavery in 2020?
DESCRIPTION:The national discourse surrounding police brutality and the criminal justice system is bringing more attention to the United State’s system of mass incarceration. The U.S. makes up about 4.25% of the total world population\, yet 1 out of 5 prisoners in the world are incarcerated in the United States. \nWhy is that? \nOn April 8th\, 1964\, The 13th Constitutional Amendment was passed which stated\, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude\, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted\, shall exist within the United States\, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” This meant that slavery was abolished with an exception; the exception of those who have been deemed criminals. \nIn 2020\, as we try to understand police brutality and how it supports mass incarceration\, it is essential that we dissect if these systems are feeding into an institution of slavery with a precedent set by the 13th amendment. \nOur films Restorative Justice\, Justice in Crisis and Immigrant Prisons were produced to ignite and fuel these necessary conversations. \nClick Here to use one of our films\, bringing our social justice documentaries and curriculum to your classroom.

SUMMARY:JUST SUSTAINABILITIES IN URBAN PLANNING AND PRACTICE
DESCRIPTION:EcoDistricts is proud to announce that our next Webinar Wednesday will be hosted by Dr. Julian Agyeman of Tufts University\, a key thought leader of the movement to center racial equity and justice in the urban planning and design profession. \nIn this provocative and engaging conversation\, Julian will outline the concept of just sustainabilities as a response to the ‘equity deficit’ of current sustainability thinking and practice. He believes that what our cities can become (sustainable\, smart\, sharing\, and resilient) and who is allowed to belong in them (recognition of difference\, diversity\, and a right to the city) are fundamentally and inextricably interlinked. He will highlight his scholarship and writing with examples from urban planning and design\, urban agriculture and food justice\, and the concept of sharing cities. \nRegister for this Free Event Here

SUMMARY:Universities Making a Difference by Integrating Climate Action and Sustainability Across the Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:The social contract between universities and the societies they serve is changing. It used to be enough for universities to do research and educate students. Increasingly\, however\, we are being asked to engage tangibly and actively with the problems faced by the societies which fund us. This webinar will: \n(1) Explore the challenges and opportunities facing universities attempting to respond to this demand with regard to climate action and sustainability \n(2) Outline an agenda for transforming the campus into a living laboratory of sustainability and agent of change in the community \n(3) Involve participants in a conversation about how universities can integrate climate action across the college or university curriculum\, drawing on the experiences of several of Second Nature’s Climate Leadership Network and University Climate Change Coalition (UC3) members. \nRegister for this event HERE.

SUMMARY:Coping with Climate Anxiety in the Classroom and for Yourself: a Workshop for College & University Faculty
DESCRIPTION:This event takes place online on July 23 starting at 9 am Hawaii/ 12 noon Pacific/ 3 pm Eastern/ 8 pm Central European Time.\n  \nThe Worry & Hope study at the University of Hawaii revealed a pervasive emotional climate of fear\, anger\, sadness\, shame and hope about climate change. College faculty already knew this\, and are\, themselves\, feeling anxiety\, grief\, and additional stress that accompanies a sense of urgency and responsibility to teach and engage with students about climate change across all academic subject areas. \nThis two hour online workshop is for faculty to address their own emotions so that we can create and hold space in our classrooms for students to integrate and process hard realities about climate change impacts. If not here\, where? If not us\, who? A short overview of research on climate change education and pedagogies will be followed by experiential workshop going through 4 activities that you can then use in your classroom.  The activities are based on recent research as well as ecotherapy\, ecopsychology\, and the Active Hope work of Joanna Macy. \nThis event is Deeper Dive of the workshops from April\, May and June (but everyone is welcome to attend)\, in which we will continue to learn from each other and build a set of practices that work in a higher education setting. \nKrista Hiser is the Director of the University of Hawaii System Center for Sustainability Across the Curriculum (an AASHE Regional Center). She is also a longtime Professor of writing and teaches climate change communication\, project-based sustainability capstone\, and climate fiction. \nRegister today Deadline is July 22. Contact Krista Hiser with questions. \n
