SUMMARY:Biomimicry as a Framework for GreenSTEM Education Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Biomimicry is an innovation method that looks to examples in nature to solve design and engineering problems. It is a rapidly growing field of study that is charting a course toward a more sustainable world and creating exciting new STEM career pathways. This hands-on workshop will focus on how educators can use biomimicry as a framework to teach standards-aligned content while empowering our next generation of problem-solvers to think differently about nature\, engineering\, and a sustainable future. \nThe workshop will begin with an interactive introduction to the topic of biomimicry\, including both indoor and outdoor activities. Participants will then experience the biomimicry design process first hand as they work in small groups on a design challenge. Activities and resources from Biomimicry Institute’s Youth Design Challenge (YDC) will be featured. The YDC is a free project-based education program and annual competition that empowers students to design nature-inspired solutions to environmental problems. Independent program evaluations indicate that YDC participants experience positive impacts in their ability to define design problems\, use scientific information to solve problems\, think critically\, collaborate with peers\, and believe that they can make a positive difference in the world. \nLearning Objectives \n\nLearn the fundamentals of biomimicry and begin to see the natural world in a whole new light.\nLearn effective strategies for sharing biomimicry with students and connecting nature with technology\, engineering\, and design\nExplore ways to connect the YDC to local concerns to create authentic challenge experiences.\nDiscover how biomimicry and the YDC support Next Generation Science Standards and use a curriculum mapping tool to outline a biomimicry challenge unit

SUMMARY:Webinar: Your Curriculum Needs a Reality Check
DESCRIPTION:Gary Lawrence has been in the trenches of local government\, academia\, NGOs and the private sector working on a range of sustainability issues and he has the battle scars to prove it.  Many of his scars healed with a little more wisdom about what doesn’t work and what might work better.  He would like to share some of his experiences with you.  Despite the great investment of thought and money\, sustainability has failed to shape necessary political\, economic and social change since Our Common Future was published.  Some reasons for lack of progress relate to doing short term economic thinking by businesses and investors.  Other factors have to do with competition within advocacy groups for the ownership of the idea and the priorities of their members.  The academic community\, too\, bears great responsibility by not finding ways to synthesize its research and teaching so that society can better understand where the value of leveraged changes can be found.  In this webinar\, Gary Lawrence will explore the fundamental reasons why communicators have not found a way to penetrate the public’s consciousness so they will focus on the importance to “me\,” not to some anonymous “other.” \nGary Lawrence\, formerly\, Chief Sustainability Officer\, AECOM\, formerly\, Planning Director\, City of Seattle \nGary Lawrence has worked on sustainability problems and delivered sustainable outcomes within and between non-governmental\, governmental\, private/corporate and multilateral institutions locally and globally.  As Seattle’s Planning Director he led the development of the world’s first sustainably focused municipal comprehensive plan.  At the University of Washington he created and lead the first academic center for sustainable communities.  During this period he was also a consultant to the US Conference of Mayors\, National Association of Counties\, PCSD\, the OECD an was a negotiator for the US at Habitat II.  Habitat II’s chairman in Istanbul meeting called Gary’s position paper for the OECD the single most important intellectual contribution to the entire Habitat process.  After leaving the University of Washington he became a Principal and Urban Strategy Leader at The Arup Group where part of his responsibility was helping better integrate sustainability into Arup’s internationally renown design culture.  He worked with leaders and staff in all geographies.  From Arup he went to AECOM as their first Chief Sustainability Officer.  Working with corporate leadership and business leaders in all geographies\, he led sustainability and CSR reporting as well as helping businesses win work through helping clients deliver more sustainable outcomes.  Since leaving AECOM he has worked on better integration of sustainability\, resilience and adaptation strategies to reduce societal risk with some emphasis on disaster risk reduction activities within the UN system.  He has also been active writing and speaking on the Sustainable Development Goals as well as how to embrace scientific doubt in societies for which certainty has become the political center.

SUMMARY:Designing a Multidimensional Poverty Index
DESCRIPTION:UNDP and OPHI are excited to offer you a Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) on Designing a Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI). This five-week course facilitated in English draws on a handbook\, How to Build a National Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI): Using the MPI to inform the SDGs\, launched by UNDP and OPHI in July 2019. The MPI complements traditional monetary poverty measures by capturing severe deprivations in education\, health\, living standards\, employment\, safety\, and many other dimensions of poverty. Using country and sub-national examples\, this course offers detailed practical guidance for policymakers\, technical experts\, and other stakeholders on how to design an MPI at the national and local levels. \nMOOC highlights and outcomes\n\nGain hands-on tools to develop a comprehensive MPI capturing multiple simultaneous deprivations faced by the poor\nInteract with experts who are actively engaged in developing national and subnational MPIs\nJoin the Community-of-Practice committed to ending multidimensional poverty\nTake a deep dive into rich learning materials\nReceive a certificate of completion from premier international development institutions

SUMMARY:Co-Creating a Sustainable Future
DESCRIPTION:Even though the Coronavirus is resulting in a number of significant changes and the Columbia Gorge Community College has indefinitely postponed Spring term classes\, the course “Co-Creating a Sustainable Future” will still be hosted via Zoom by Milt Markewitz. \nDo you want to better understand the ethical shortfalls that underlay climate change\, wars\, and social injustices? Explore the academic bridges\nand the spiritual pathways necessary to create ecological integrity and social harmony. Understand the life changes necessary to live within the Earth’s\ncapacity to renew\, cleanse and heal. \nEVERY TUESDAY EVENING FROM 7:00 – 8:30 FOR 11 CONSECUTIVE WEEKS BEGINNING MARCH 31ST AND ENDING JUNE 9TH.   \nNote that there is no Registration fee. \nThe essence of the 11-week series is as follows: \n1) Participants are asked to share current aspirations\, and to then update them based on what they’ve learned in subsequent sessions; \n2) Topical content and embodiment exercises in each session will help participants recognize the difference between sustainable and non-sustainable cultures; \n3) Since the sustainable cultures are Earth Based and I’m a product of the non-sustainable culture\, almost every session will have an Earth Based facilitator. \n4) Through these facilitations it is hoped that participants will experience a process orientation with natural flows and emergence; and \n5) Each session is intended to be 1/3 to 1/2 conversational and reflective. \nThe schedule is as follows: \n\nMarch 31     Introductory Aspirations & The Course Outline\nApril 7         Living Systems & Emergence               Yvonne Vizina\nApril 14       Paradigm/Consciousness Shifts                      Ilarion Merculieff\nApril 21       Playing the Game of Life                                   To be Named\nApril 28       Imbedded Cultural Differences                        Jefferson Greene\nMay 5          Being Present to a Broader Reality                  Ilarion Merculieff\nMay 12        Colonization                      Steve Newcomb\nMay 19        Indigenous Life                         Mary Lee Jones (Sumnitee)\nMay 26        Ethical & Religious Implications          Lewis Cardinal & Vicky Stifter\nJune 2         Enlightened non-Natives                     Jeff Gobble & Aimee Samara\nJune 9         Revised Aspirations & Closing\n\nTo Register\, email Milt Markewitz <miltmarkewitz@gmail.com> with your first and last names\, email address\, phone #\, and if you would like the name of your organization.  When Milt receives your request\, he ’ll send you the link to ZOOM.
