SUMMARY:Online Certificate on Education for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:This unique programme is designed to provide participants with the opportunity to deepen understanding\, knowledge\, and skills to integrate Education for Sustainable Development and Education for Global Citizenship into classrooms\, schools\, and curricula. It contributes to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals\, with a specific focus on SDG 4\, target SDG 4.7. \nUnlike most programmes in sustainability\, in these courses the Earth Charter (EC) is used as a central feature of this approach. The EC provides a broad\, inclusive and powerful values-based orientation that can be infused within the missions and purposes of most educational programmes. The methodologies introduced are ones that can be applied to all learning across the curriculum and across grade levels. \nParticipants who successfully complete this Online Programme will be invited to join the Earth Charter Educators Network. \n\nProgramme Objectives\nStrengthen the knowledge\, skills\, and abilities of educators to implement Education for Sustainable Development and Education for Global Citizenship in their work\, providing a space for dialogue and professional update on pedagogical processes of transformative learning that respond to the new guidance and educational needs in this area. The programme will offer a special space to look into the UN Sustainable Development Goals. \nSpecifically\, this Certificate Programme seeks to: \n\nClarify concepts of sustainability\, sustainability values and principles\, sustainable lifestyles and responsible consumption; and global citizenship\, as well as the synergies between them.\nDeepen and expand knowledge about new paradigms of education associated with education for sustainability\, sustainable lifestyles\, education for global citizenship and transformative education.\nStrengthen capacities and skills of the educators to integrate the values of sustainability in their areas of action\, and develop educational programmes that promote a new awareness of our relationship with the environment and sustainable lifestyles.\nExplore methodological and transforming pedagogical tools that can be used in educational programmes.\nMotivate and inspire educators to contribute\, through their areas of action\, in building more coherent\, harmonious\, and sustainable societies.\nStimulate the exchange of experiences between educators from different contexts and regions.\n\nSome expected results: \nWhen completing the Certificate Programme\, the participants will: \n\nDevelop a greater understanding of sustainable development\, the Sustainable Development Goals and their application in education.\nBe familiar with new paradigms of education within the framework of Education for Sustainable Development\, and related themes.\nDeepen knowledge and pedagogical tools to incorporate values-based education for sustainable development in educational programmes and processes.\nInternalize the ethical framework for sustainable development that is articulated in the Earth Charter\, as a set of fundamental principles and values for building a more just\, sustainable\, and peaceful society.\nStrengthen the abilities and skills to work with values and principles of sustainability and the Earth Charter in educational programmes.\n\n\n\nParticipants Profile\nThis Certificate Programme is aimed at K-12 teachers (primary and secondary educators)\, education professionals\, and academics in different areas and levels of education. \n\n\nMethodology\nThis is an online Certificate Programme\, therefore sessions follow the model of asynchronous learning\, where participants have flexibility to complete the sessions when it is convenient for them. However\, there will be five real time webinars\, one at the beginning of the programme and one at the end of each course\, to give the possibility for participants and facilitators to meet and interact more. \nThe Certificate Programme has a duration of five months. \nIt consists of four courses plus five seminars. \nEach course consists of five sessions (one per week). \nThe minimum hourly load per participant is 124 hours\, which involves 4 hours per week to read and see all the materials per session\, plus the time for the seminars\, and the preparation and implementation of a final project (individually or in group). \n\n\nCourses\nThe courses provide a balance of theoretical and practical analysis\, and includes video chats offered by facilitators\, individual study materials\, and forums where the group discusses the subjects.  The four courses offered are: \n\nA Planetary Perspective: Toward a Culture of Peace\, Sustainability\, and Well-Being\nValues and Principles for Sustainability: The Earth Charter as an Ethical Framework and a  Call to Action\nTransformative Learning\, Worldviews\, Sustainability: Experiential Education and the Earth Charter\nTransformative Learning and ESD: A Holistic Pedagogy Grounded in the Neurosciences\n\nRequirements to successfully conclude the Programme and obtain the Certificate:\na) Conclude all the courses and meet basic course requirements.\nb) Implement the final project and present a report. \n\n\nPayment\nThe course fee is US$1\,300 \n30% discount offered for groups of 3 or more. 10% discount in registration before 2  December 2019 (full payment only). \nCourse fee must be paid at least two weeks before Online Programme starts. \nPayment methods: \n\nCredit card\nBank transfer\n\n*Flexible payment plans available. \nFor more information on payment contact apply[@]earthcharter.org

SUMMARY:Webinar: Welcome and Unwelcome Surprises on the Path to Carbon-Neutrality
DESCRIPTION:For many colleges and universities\, the commitment to carbon-neutrality was initially a pledge based upon a leap of faith that was judged too important to delay until a clear path was understood. Now we have more than a decade of effort behind us\, which includes some pleasant surprises and some setbacks\, and many lessons learned along the way. This presentation will take a candid look at what we have learned that will enable us to make course corrections and attain our commitment to carbon-neutrality. \n\n\n\n\nWendell Brase\, Associate Chancellor – Sustainability\, University of California\, Irvine \nWendell Brase is the University of California\, Irvine’s first Associate Chancellor for Sustainability. In this role\, he leads efforts by UC Irvine and assists other campuses throughout the UC system to implement UC’s Carbon Neutrality Initiative. Brase co-chairs the University of California’s Global Climate Leadership Council. \nFor 25 years\, he provided leadership for an award-winning sustainability program in his role as Vice Chancellor for Administrative and Business Services. UC Irvine received California’s highest environmental award\, the Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award\, in 2008 and again in 2013; has earned numerous accolades for sustainability\, including a 2009 Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Leadership Achievement Award and their 2014 Climate Leadership Award; has been on Sierra magazine’s Top 10 list of greenest campuses for the past ten years\, coming in at No. 1 in 2014\, 2015\, 2018\, and first in the U.S. in 2019; and in 2018\, UCI was recognized by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education with a STARS Platinum rating for its sustainability operations\, academics\, and research. The campus currently has 18 LEED Platinum and 10 LEED Gold buildings\, among the most of any campus in the U.S.
