DESCRIPTION:  \nEast Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District is excited to invite the community to our various upcoming workshops. All of these nature-based workshops help us to better know and care for the natural world around us. Plus\, they are FREE to attend! We’ll discuss design tips\, ways to build fertile soil\, conserving water\, native plants that feature edible fruit and nuts\, and beneficial insects. You’ll walk away ready to assess your site and make a plan for a beautiful – and delicious – landscape!

DESCRIPTION:You are invited to attend our Culture Box Workshop where you will “dig in” and explore Culture Box treasures and visit with teachers who have extensive experience with them. You will also meet international students and guests who will help to bring the Culture Boxes “alive”! \nThe Culture Boxes are a part of the WorldOregon Global and Multicultural Resource Center which houses an extensive 30-year collection representing over 100 countries. Culture Boxes are filled with hands-on\, authentic realia and lessons on the arts\, culture and daily lives of people from almost every continent. They can be enjoyed by students of all ages!

DESCRIPTION:Learn how to build your own rain garden! We’ll explore the critical role rain gardens can play in urban stream restoration\, and how they add beautiful landscaping to your yard at the same time. \nYou will learn how to assess your site to determine the best location and size\, calculate impervious surfaces\, determine soil suitability\, choose appropriate plants\, and how to maintain your new rain garden. You will also receive a comprehensive manual that guides you through all the steps in constructing your rain garden. Where possible\, workshop includes a short tour of a nearby rain garden.

SUMMARY:Sustaining Your Interdisciplinary Environmental and Sustainability Program: Opportunities and Resources
DESCRIPTION:Who is the Traveling Workshops Program For?\nIs your institution or department getting ready for re-accreditation\, undergoing program review\, or seeking guidance on strategic planning? Are you facing reorganization or other major changes such as faculty turnover? Is your curriculum in need of modernization\, including the incorporation of modern methods of teaching and learning? Are you trying to incorporate environment and sustainability into your curriculum? Are you anticipating major demographic changes in your students? Is your program involved in preparing K-8 Earth Science teachers? Do your faculty members need guidance in evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning? \nIf any above questions are relevant to you or your institution\, you should host an NAGT-sponsored Traveling Workshop. The Traveling Workshops Program is open and applicable to a wide variety of disciplines\, including geosciences\, environmental studies\, sustainability initiatives\, and more. \nHow does the Traveling Workshops Program work? \nThe National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT)’s Traveling Workshops Program (TWP) brings leaders in environmental\, sustainability\, and geoscience education to your campus\, regional\, or national event. The TWP focuses on opportunities to strengthen both courses and educational programs\, including attracting and supporting diverse students. Since 2014\, the TWP has visited nearly 50 institutions and reached more than 500 faculty members in the Earth and environmental sciences. \nWorkshops are available in five themes: \n1) Geoscience and Environmental Science Departments and Programs \n\n2) Cross-Campus Environmental and Sustainability Programs\n3) Courses (Intro and Upper-Level and Effective and Societally Relevant Courses)\n4) Earth Science in K-8 Teacher Preparation Programs\n5) Supporting the Success of All Students (diversity)At the end of an NAGT Traveling Workshop\, participants will have a combination of the following\, adjusted according to workshop theme: \n\nStrategies and approaches that have worked for others in the US and Canada.\nA collection of resources\, including department best practices\, curricula\, courses\, modules\, and activities\, on the topic(s) of choice.\nA departmental\, program\, or individual action plan for moving forward.\n\nThere is an application process involved in bringing the Traveling Workshops Program to you.\nWho facilitates the Traveling Workshops Program? \nTraveling workshops are facilitated by individuals from TWP’s impressive roster of more than 45 leaders in their fields.
