Skills for a Greener Future: Taking Stock and Looking Ahead

October 10, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Free

The transition to an inclusive and environmentally sustainable development model will most likely disrupt labor markets. New jobs will be created and current jobs will be destroyed.

In the process of job creation and destruction, the availability of the right skills will help pave the way to a productive green structural transformation. In managing the transition, skills development policies that help upskill and reskill workers, match skills demand and supply, among others, will be crucial.

Against this background, this GAIN Webinar will explore the linkages between skills and the Just Transition. Based on the recently presented ILO report Skills for a Greener Future, it will shed light on the need for skills development policies that allow countries to seize employment opportunities and minimize the costs of the Just Transition. The report is based on a series of detailed country studies covering 32 countries and complemented with rigorous multi-regional economic modeling.

The Webinar will combine the presentation of the main insights of the report and the presentation of the modeling methodology used to assess the skills needs for green jobs, applicable both at the national and regional levels. A 15 minutes Q&A session will end the webinar.
