Sukanya Borthakur joined Medical Teams International in March 2019 as their global Community Health Advisor. In this role Sukanya is focused on Medical Teams’ Tanzania and Uganda programs. She previously led Medical Teams’ community health program for Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazaar, Bangladesh as an implementing partner of UNHCR and UNICEF.
Sukanya is on the Norwegian Refugee Council’s standby roster as a Humanitarian Communications Expert and worked with International Blue Crescent Relief & Development Foundation in Turkey for the Syrian refugee response. Prior to her humanitarian career, Sukanya spent three+ years as a Media Production Manager in London, U.K. She earned her master’s degree in Media Production and her PhD in Refugee and Communications Studies at Birmingham City University (U.K.).
Sukanya is dedicated to promoting community empowerment and linking refugees to critical health care information and services. She excels in drawing out the unique talents of Community Health Workers to create sustainable community health programs and develop the health capacity of vulnerable communities.
