Position summary
Would you like to teach kids about the wild world of animals? The Oregon Zoo is committed to conserving the world’s wildlife and habitats. Our education programs provide fun and exciting ways to share your commitment to this work and become part of a team of passionate and talented teachers. The zoo provides a wide variety of seasonal camps, classes and programs that promote conservation. We offer education programs throughout the year, but our busiest seasons are spring and summer. 2020 Camp Dates
Training dates have not yet been determined. Successful candidates should be available for the duration of the summer camp period.
- Spring Break Camp (5 days): March 23 – 27
- Summer Camp: June 8 – Sept. 4
What you will do
Camp counselors work in a team to teach thematic programs for participants of all ages using zoo exhibits, hands-on activities and natural artifacts. Activities are taught using multiple learning styles in a non-formal educational setting.
- Teach/lead existing curriculum or non-formal programs that incorporate thematic lessons/interpretation, which may include non-formal interpretive presentations, zoo tours, games, art projects and songs
- Use best practices in teaching and non-formal techniques and child/group management
- Mentor teens that are developing teaching skills and youth and adult volunteers working as program assistants
- Assist with the preparation of program supplies, organization and maintenance of teaching/program spaces and other tasks necessary for operating programs Assist in assessment of program and participant learning
- May be asked to assist in the assessment of learner outcomes.
- Follow the Oregon Zoo’s safety protocols, and animal care and handling policies
- Provide an educational, recreational and safe experience for participants/visitors, including accommodation for special needs and health concerns of participants
- Work with the education leadership team to address any problem or incident that might be of concern to participants, parents, campers or staff
- Work assigned schedule and exhibit regular and predictable attendance
Traits for success
- Enthusiasm about conservation education and working with children in an informal camp setting
- Inclusion experience with special needs children is preferred
- Availability to work the entire summer camp season (June 8 – Sept. 4)
- Able to walk up to three miles daily
- Able to lift and carry up to 35 pounds
- First Aid/CPR certification preferred (Zoo offers training opportunities).
- Food Handler’s Card preferred (Zoo offers training opportunities).
Experience and education
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Two years of experience working with children and adults in formal or informal education, including child/group management
