Ghost Net Landscape is an interactive art installation and performance, in which Emily Miller collaborates with visitors to transform piles of “ghost net” fishing rope waste into sculptural, tactile basket forms. The project involves three major components: a massive pile of ghost net rescued from our coastline, a sewing machine workstation where Emily will create the sculptures during the exhibit, and a time-lapse video documenting the process.
After four years working with ghost net, this project translates Emily’s experience into a gallery setting, creating a powerful sculptural presence from one of the most abundant and dangerous sources of ocean trash. The bright colors, organic forms, and tactile textures of each sculpture express the continued allure of plastic despite its status as hazardous marine waste.
